As one of the 10 internet buzz words of 2021, 躺平 (tǎngpíng) offer a glimpse into what’s on the minds of Chinese internet users. It first appeared on the Chinese internet in June last year as a reaction of China’s youth to another social phenomenon in China — involution (内卷 nèijuǎn), or intense economic competition for ever scarcer resources. To lie flat is to choose to escape involution and high-pressure city life, to disengage from the intense social competition of China’s 996 work culture, and to opt for a life of low consumption and little social interaction.

A unique gem

LCTS is a unique gem among Chinese learning resources! As other reviewers have written, LCTS’ format is engaging (a natural, free-flowing, often humorous dialogue between two smart, articulate people); its content rich (about life, culture, songs, children stories); its resources helpful (including vocabulary lists and transcripts for each episode).

But what makes LCTS special are the hosts. Their passion for teaching Chinese comes across in every episode. Through their content and commitment to build community, it is obvious that they care about us (their dear listeners), our stories, and our successes.

I am among the many who have made LCTS a part of their Chinese learning journey. Two years into this journey that started with zero Chinese speaking/listening experience, I can honestly say that among all the Chinese learning resources available (podcasts… videos… courses… textbooks), LCTS has made the biggest contribution to my journey and my achievements related to Chinese learning.

So, thank you LCTS! I appreciate the effort and energy you have put into your craft in helping us along our journeys.

Awesome resource and great community

I have been listening for a while and having clear, authentic material from native speakers makes it much more interesting and enjoyable to learn how Chinese is really spoken.
I also just joined the Patreon and the discord community and transcripts there also help me a ton!
This is really exactly the podcast I have been needing to improve my Chinese. Thanks (谢谢).

Wonderful!

This podcast is truly wonderful. It covers material from short stories and songs, to historical tidbits and children’s tales. The hosts are smart, funny, and engaging, and they do a wonderful job of breaking down and explaining text (but all in mandarin!). As a second-generation learner looking to expand on my vocabulary and listening comprehension, this podcast does all that and more. I highly recommend!
