171 - The Age of Gold

171 - The Age of Gold

This week we pivot from talking about 12 films to 1 that is only 63 minutes: the surrealist piece by Luis Bunuel “L’Age d’Or” (or “The Age of Gold”). The 1001 by 1 crew is joined this week by Andrew Corns of The Revisionist Almanac podcast to breakdown all things Bunuel, surreal, and religious. Does this film find cohesion or is it more a series of loosely connected bits? Also, we may have set up a potential film for Season 6 (spoiler: it’s GROSS!). Plus, this week Andrew recommends Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom, Joey recommends “Love Lies Bleeding” (available on VOD), Adam recommends “Cowards Bend the Knee” (free on Kanopy), and Britt recommends “People Just Do Nothing” (available on Prime).

It is our second Definitive Director Ranking of the season and it is a doozy: we dive into all 12 films of Michael Mann’s filmography. Is “Heat” the definitive number 1? What is going to take the bottom pick? Have you even seen “The Keep”? Also, we break down key collaborators and talk about some core Michael Mann filmmaking tenets.

169 - The Vast of Night

169 - The Vast of Night

A lot of movies came and went during the Pandemic Years, but one of those straight-to-streaming films made its way into the book and we think you should know about it. This week, join the 1001 by 1 crew as they discuss the Sci-Fi throwback “The Vast of Night” – they break down the film’s impressive style despite its low budget, the wonderful storytelling choices, and the boldness that writer/director Andrew Patterson showed in his debut feature film. Also, this week Adam recommends “Late Nate with the Devil” (available on Shudder), Britt recommends “Pontypool” (available on Shudder), and Joey recommends “Challengers” (available to rent on most major platforms).

    168 - Memento

    168 - Memento

We haven’t talked about a Christopher Nolan film since our “The Dark Knight” episode and Definitive Nolan Ranking – so we decided to dive deep into the film that really launched Nolan’s career – “Memento”. Join the 1001 by 1 crew as they relitigate the 2002 Oscars ceremony, praised our three lead performances, and yearn for this Chrisotpher Nolan again. Does this movie get better with subsequent watches? Who can we trust? Is Leonard Shelby just offing random people??? Also, this week Joey recommends “Civil War”, Adam recommends Nolan’s “Insomnia”, and Britt recommends the Lynch series “Twin Peaks”.

    167 - A Touch of Zen

Off we go to China and wuxia films this week as we discuss a seminal film that helped define this genre: King Hu’s “A Touch of Zen”. Join the 1001 by 1 crew as we discuss all things wuxia, the convolutedly simple plot, the idea of actors also being part of the crew, and the (unfortunate) Gu of the story. Also, this week Britt recommends “Kung Fu Hustle” (available to rent on AppleTV+), Joey recommends “Crazy Stupid Love” (available on AppleTV+),  and Adam recommends “Heist” (available to rend on most major platforms).

    166 - Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Break out all the alcohol you have and get ready for some games because the 1001 by 1 crew is joined by Myke from Cinemusts this week to discuss Mike Nichol’s adaptation of the award-winning Edward Albee play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Technical snafus aside, come along for this journey of psychological torture as we discuss all things theatre, who would be in the 2024 remake of this film, the world of academia, and why do people drink so late. Also, Britt’s gives us who quick “Rushmore” thoughts. Plus, this week Adam recommends “Working Girl” (available to rend on most major platforms), Britt recommends “Perfect Days” (available to rend on most major platforms), Joey recommends “Blue Valentine” (available on Max), and Myke recommends “It Happened One Night” (free on Tubi).

Hanging out with friends

I have also been working through the 1001 Movies list and listening to this as I watch along with them has been such a great experience. It makes me feel like I am listening to my very knowledgeable friends talk about movies. It’s great!

Excellent concept, but…

Started the one on LA Confidential and the girl doesn’t even know how to pronounce Jack Vincennes? Hard pass.

Very Fun

A very fun podcast. I'm not a movie aficionado, but I enjoy a good deep dive into a subject and this podcast delivers on that!
