Farming while Black or Brown Part 1

Farming while Black or Brown Part 1

Those first two episodes in this mini-series about farm work and the agrarian myth asked us to move beyond our images of red barns and silos to understand with more nuance the challenging realities of contemporary farm work, even for Wisconsinites who grew up on family farms.  These next two episodes explore what it means to farm while black or brown, or more precisely what it means to do farm work while black and brown.  Because the stories of Black and Latinx 1500 Stories respondents who grew up doing farm work aren’t stories about family farms.  They are stories about laboring in the fields for commercial agriculture.

Gorgeous and Necessary

My brain has exploded open with this series that does the unthinkable: have real people talking real talk about class, their perceptions of it, their place in it, and what that all means to them. Jennifer Myhre weaves all the stories together with wisdom, hope, and generousity. But the sheer volume and bredth of the stories collected is the star of this project. The theme, "Everyone has a story," is explored with humanity and honesty. If it hits you the way it hit me, it will have you thinking, feelling, and wondering about our society's economic inequality in totally new ways.
