1619
In August of 1619, a ship carrying more than 20 enslaved Africans arrived in the English colony of Virginia. America was not yet America, but this was the moment it began. No aspect of the country that would be formed here has been untouched by the 250 years of slavery that followed. On the 400th anniversary of this fateful moment, it is time to tell the story. “1619” is a New York Times audio series hosted by Nikole Hannah-Jones. The series is so compelling and informative. It bright to light a new perspective for me on the cumulative effects of slavery on African Americans and our nation. It’s beyond time to apologize for the mistakes of our forefathers and course correct for the future.

This was a riviting depiction of the struggle of our black farmers. This is still going on today in the cattle industry and I’m sure other farmers throughout this country. I am intrigued by how hard they fought for their land rights even though the government was implicit in the theft of their lands and livelihood. What is our recourse in the 21st century? What can we as black peoples do to protect the future in this country of theft and exploitation? I’d like to hear more about our history, thank you for this excellent piece.
