After years of subscribing to the NYT and listening to The Opinions podcast, I am now removing this podcast completely from my feed. I have always enjoyed it, so I was surprised and horrified to listen to "The Rich Don't Play by the Rules. So Why Should I?". It was bad in SO many ways:
1. It presented weak and flimsy arguments that made me lose complete faith in the reasoning powers of the show's hosts.
2. It gave ammunition to the right, at a particularly critical time in our nation's politics, by presenting those on the left as completely lacking in moral principles.
3. This sort of advice, if followed, will make life much harder for those of us who play by the rules. I already have to contend with petitioning store clerks to unlock the laundry detergent and light bulbs in CVS and Home Depot. Do we also want the frequently-stolen items at Whole Foods and other stores, and stores in nicer neighborhoods, to be locked up as well? Convenient, hassle-free shopping is only possible if the majority of us are honest.
I am very annoyed and disappointed.
