Sunday Night Lights

I can’t wait for this story to drop. I love this take on reality TV because while this may have been an absurd concept in the past it is totally relevant today. Definitely adding this to my subscriptions!

UPDATE: I’ve kept listening, and have somewhat changed my mind. This isn’t audio fiction the way other podcasts are. It’s more like a full-cast audiobook. Reframing my expectations has helped, and the episodes featuring podcast episodes that are the fiction version of The Popcast really won me over. Overall, it’s building to a really fun story. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I think this show is so highly-rated because people love Knox McCoy. Knox said this podcast was originally a book that didn’t get picked up by a publisher, so he decided to release it chapter-by-chapter as a podcast. As someone who listens to quite a bit of audio fiction, this isn’t how it’s done. Good fiction podcasts are done more like TV than like books. His episodes are way too short not allowing listeners to get into the story. I’m listening as they’re released, but that doesn’t seem like the best choice. The story may be better if you binge it from start to finish, but that’s not possible yet. I like the story concept, but the execution needed work.

It was ok until episode 10, where it sounds like 2 tracks are overlapping and the story is not understandable anymore. Before that the episodes are very short, even for binge listening. He spends so much time going over “last time on” which is rarely done in fiction podcasting unless it’s been months or years between seasons, which leads me to believe he’s not a listener of fiction podcasting at all. I don’t mind everything being voiced by one person, and I’ve heard it done well, but a few tweaks could really make a difference.
