One July night in 1995, Deputy Sheriff William G. Hardy was shot behind the Crown Sterling Suites hotel in Birmingham, Alabama. At the same time as the murder, at least ten people saw Toforest Johnson four miles away, at a popular nightclub called Tee's Place. But detectives zeroed in on him as a main suspect in Deputy Hardy’s murder anyway, ultimately resulting in Toforest being tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. For over a quarter century, Toforest has been confined to a 5’ by 8’ cell on Alabama’s death row. In 2019, investigative journalist Beth Shelburne began covering the case, going down a disturbing rabbit hole revealing many unsettling facts that cast grave doubts about Toforest’s guilt. After listening to this podcast for years, it seems the justice system and the people in control of it is worried more about procedures that actual innocence.

Injustice Survivor

What this team has done and continues to do is so inspiring. Once I was able to get my children through school I decided to take their advice as well as that of others and quit talking about what I could’ve done and do it, I am now a near 2nd-year law student with intentions on starting a clinic to offer free or low-cost representation to those that unable to retain it. Under or misrepresentation has led to too many people’s lives and the lives of their loved ones being negatively impacted causing an all too often ripple effect. Growing up in the system myself there are too many crimes either over or under-punished and a lot of that has to do with the inability to obtain appropriate legal advice and or retain representation. The people associated with the Innocence Project or fighting to right the wrongs of our justice system do so selflessly and I cannot stress the need for people to support them in the cause.

This is one of my favorite ever podcasts. It is so interesting and simulataneously heartbreaking to hear these real stories of wrongful convictions- some who have been in prison for 30 years for crimes they did not commit. Wrongful Convictions Podcast works together with the Innocence Project who advocates for these people through pro bono work and sifting through document after document, and evidence to prove that these people did not do what they were accused of. Innocence Project does really important justice work as the justice system has failed so many of these people. Give it a listen! I couldn’t recommend it enough!!

Mom to a dozen

Yeah, maybe a few of people from the different episodes were wrongly convicted but it's crazy to me on how many of the facts were left out on the Christopher Vaughn. I mean, if you look at all the facts in the case one might have a different opinion about him being innocent. It's too bad because the few cases that the people really might be innocent are being washed away with not giving all the facts in other cases. I think it's interesting to have so many interviews but Chris Vaughn is where he should be...in prison for life. Please give ALL the facts not just what makes your case for innocence
