今回はネイティブの人たちが当たり前のように使う句動詞10選を一緒に学習します。
句動詞とは、英語でPhrasal verbといいます。
句動詞（phrasal verb）とは、「動詞」と「前置詞」や「副詞」が結びついて、一つの新しい意味を持つ動詞句のことです。
これらの組み合わせは、もとの動詞や前置詞、副詞の意味からは想像できないような、全く異なる意味になることが多いため、英語学習者にとって特に難しいとされています。
基本的な構造：
動詞 + 前置詞（例：look after）
- 動詞 + 副詞（例：get up）
- 動詞 + 副詞 + 前置詞（例：look forward to）
具体的な例をあげてみます。
1. Call off: To cancel an event or activity. 「キャンセルする」
☆They had to call off the outdoor concert because of the rain.
= They had to cancel the outdoor concert due to the rain.
雨が降っているので、屋外コンサートを中止しなければならなかった。
2. Find out: To discover information. 「発見する」
☆ I need to find out what time the movie starts.
= I need to discover what time the movie starts.
何時に映画が始まるかを見つける必要がある。
3. Hold on: To wait for a short time. 「待つ」
☆ Please hold on for a moment while I check the details.
詳細をチェックしている間お待ちください。
4. Look after: To take care of someone or something.
☆ My neighbor is looking after my cat while I'm on vacation.= My neighbor is taking care of my cat while I'm on vacation. 私が休暇中、近所の人が私の猫の面倒を見てくれています。
5. Make up: To invent a story or excuse. 「言い訳する」☆ He always makes up excuses for being late.彼はいつも遅れてくる言い訳をしています。6. Put off: To postpone an event or task. 「遅延する」☆ Don't put off your homework until the last minute.最後まで宿題を遅らせてないようにしよう。
7. Put on: To place an item of clothing on your body. 「着る」☆ It's cold outside, so you should put on a jacket.
外は寒いので、ジャケットを着るべきです。
8. Take off: To remove an item of clothing. 「脱ぐ」☆Please take off your shoes before you come inside.
家に入る前に靴を脱いでください。
9. Turn down: To refuse an offer or request. 「断る」☆ She had to turn down the job offer because the salary was too low.
10. Turn up: To arrive unexpectedly or to increase the volume of something. 「予期せぬうちに現れる」
☆ He finally turned up at the party around midnight.
彼はつに真夜中に現れた。☆Can you turn up the music? I can't hear it.音楽の音量を上げてください。聞こえません。
