    Ep 293 - SERMON - Truly: Do you know who you are in light of who Jesus is? John 8:21–59

    10.18.26 Summary - Truly Series John 8:21–59 | Knowing Jesus, Knowing Who You Are    Main Question: Do you know who you are in light of who Jesus is? Are you allowing the truth of Christ to define your identity, or are you allowing the lies of the world, sin, and your own expectations to determine who you are?   Summary: In John 8:21–59, Jesus challenges the religious leaders about their understanding of who He is—and, ultimately, who they are. The religious leaders believed they knew God because they were descendants of Abraham. They considered themselves free, righteous, and faithful. Yet Jesus exposed a deeper reality: they were enslaved to sin and unable to recognize the truth standing before them. Jesus declares: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32 And then makes an even greater promise: “So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.” — John 8:36 True freedom isn't found in heritage, religious knowledge, personal achievements, or how we define ourselves. True freedom comes through Jesus Christ. Throughout the passage, Jesus reveals that our understanding of ourselves is directly connected to our understanding of Him. When we misunderstand who Jesus is, we misunderstand who we are. We may want Jesus to be our Savior without allowing Him to be our Lord. We may accept Him as a forgiving God while rejecting His authority as Judge. Or we may treat Him as someone who should give us everything we want rather than trusting Him as the loving Father who knows what we need. But Jesus cannot be reduced to the version of Him we prefer. The climax comes in John 8:58 when Jesus declares: “Before Abraham was, I AM!” Jesus is not simply a prophet, teacher, or religious leader. He is God—the Great I AM. And because He is who He says He is, we can trust Him to tell us who we truly are. When we recognize Jesus as Lord, Savior, Judge, and Forgiver, we begin to understand our identity through His truth rather than the lies of this world. Key Takeaways: Who you believe Jesus is determines how you understand yourself. A distorted view of Christ leads to a distorted identity. Jesus is the Great I AM. His declaration in John 8:58 reveals His divine identity and authority. True freedom comes from Jesus alone. Religious heritage, good works, and personal confidence cannot free us from slavery to sin. The truth doesn't simply inform us—it exposes and transforms us. Jesus reveals what is truly happening in our hearts. We cannot accept Jesus as Savior while refusing Him as Lord. Following Christ requires surrender and obedience. Jesus is both Judge and Forgiver. His righteousness exposes sin, and His grace offers forgiveness and restoration. Jesus is not a genie who grants every request. He is God, who knows what is good and walks with us through suffering. The lies we believe shape the lives we live. Satan distorts truth, but Jesus reveals the truth that sets us free. Our actions reveal what we truly believe. Knowing God should transform how we think, speak, love, and live. Our identity must be rooted in Christ. Through faith in Him, we are no longer defined by slavery to sin but can live as forgiven children of God. You cannot truly understand who you are until you understand who Jesus is. He is the Great I AM—our Lord, Savior, Judge, and Forgiver. When we trust His identity, surrender to His truth, and follow Him, we discover the freedom and new identity only Christ can give.    Gospel Response:  We cannot reject Jesus' identity while claiming an identity that only He can give us. Jesus came into our broken world, lived the perfect life we could not live, died on the cross for our sins, and overcame death so that we could be forgiven, rescued, and set free. He is not merely a Savior who rescues us from consequences. He is our Lord, who calls us to surrender. He is not merely a Judge who exposes our sin. He is also the Forgiver who offers us grace. He is not a genie who exists to fulfill our desires. He is our God, who walks with us through brokenness and transforms us into His children. The gospel invites us to stop defining ourselves through sin, shame, pride, insecurity, achievements, or the lies of Satan. Instead, we come to Jesus in repentance and faith, trusting Him for both forgiveness and freedom. When the Son sets you free, you really are free.   Personal Reflection:  Who do you believe Jesus is? Are you accepting all of who He says He is, or only the parts that fit your worldview? Where have you allowed lies, guilt, shame, pride, or insecurity to define your identity? Are you asking Jesus to rescue you from something while refusing to surrender it to Him? Do you see Jesus as both your Lord and Savior, your Judge and Forgiver?     Ep 292 - SERMON - Truly: Are you walking in the darkness of this world, or are you following Jesus, the Light of Life? John 8:12–20

    10.11.26 Summary - Truly Series John 8:12–20 | Jesus, the Light of the World    Main Question: Are you walking in the darkness of this world, or are you following Jesus, the Light of Life?       Summary: In John 8:12–20, Jesus makes a powerful declaration: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” — John 8:12 Jesus isn't simply offering guidance through life's difficulties. He is declaring who He is—the Son of God, the promised Messiah, and the Light who came to save the world. During the Feast of Tabernacles, where great torches reminded Israel of God's presence and guidance through the wilderness, Jesus announces that He is the true Light. Just as God guided and protected His people, Jesus came to lead people out of spiritual darkness and into eternal life. Yet the Pharisees continued to challenge and reject Him. They knew the law, studied Scripture, and claimed to know God, but they failed to recognize the very Son of God standing before them. Their pride and dependence on human understanding kept them from seeing the truth. This passage reminds us that knowing about God is not the same as knowing God. Jesus reveals the Father, and to truly know the Father, we must know the Son. Walking in darkness means living apart from the truth and direction of Christ. It leaves us spiritually lost, confused, and searching for purpose in things that cannot satisfy. But Jesus offers something greater: the light of life. Following Jesus requires more than acknowledging who He is. It means trusting Him, surrendering what keeps us in darkness, and walking in obedience—even when the path is difficult. There is no gray area. We are either following Jesus in the light or walking apart from Him in darkness. And through it all, we can trust that God remains completely in control. His timing, His plans, and His purposes are perfect, just as they were when Jesus' enemies could not seize Him before His appointed hour.   Key Takeaways: Jesus is the Light of the World. Nothing could interfere with Jesus' mission or the Father's perfect timing. Jesus came to save, not simply to condemn. His purpose in coming into the world was to rescue sinners and bring them into eternal life. Walking in the light gives us purpose. Following Christ transforms how we live, love God, and love others. Our lives should reflect His light. As followers of Jesus, we are called to demonstrate His truth and love in a world surrounded by darkness. Jesus is who He says He is—the Light of the World. We don't need to remain lost in darkness because Christ has come to give us life. The question is whether we will surrender, follow Him, and walk in His light.   Gospel Response:  Jesus came into a world filled with darkness, not simply to make our lives easier, but to save us from sin and give us eternal life. We couldn't rescue ourselves from the darkness. We needed a Savior. Jesus, the Son of God, lived the righteous life we could not live, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again so that we could be forgiven, restored, and brought into the light of His presence. His invitation is clear: “Follow me.” For those who have never trusted Christ, the invitation is to turn from darkness and receive the life only He can give. For believers who have wandered, the invitation is to surrender the things pulling us away and return to walking faithfully with Him. Following Jesus doesn't mean life will be without suffering, grief, or difficult decisions. It means we never have to walk without the One who gives us life, direction, hope, and purpose. Come out of the darkness. Follow Jesus. Walk in the Light of Life. Personal Reflection:  If someone looked at your life over the past few weeks, would they say you were walking in darkness or thriving in the light? What areas of your life are you struggling to surrender to Christ so that you can follow Him?     10.04.26 Summary - Truly Series John 7:37–52   Main Question: Where does your thirst take you? When you need hope, healing, identity, satisfaction, peace, or purpose, what well do you run to?       Summary: In John 7:37–52, Jesus stands before the crowd and cries out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” He promises that whoever believes in Him will have streams of living water flowing from within—a picture of the Holy Spirit bringing true and eternal life. Jesus' words connect back to the Samaritan woman in John 4 and to Ezekiel 47, where a small trickle of water becomes a life-giving river. The life Jesus gives isn't meant to stop with us. We are a river, not a reservoir. When the Holy Spirit fills us, Christ's life and love should overflow from us into the lives of others. But that raises an important question: What are we actually being filled with? Whatever well we continually run to will eventually overflow into our relationships, words, decisions, families, workplaces, and communities. We may thirst for identity and run to achievement. We may thirst for peace and run to control. We may seek comfort through food, our phones, entertainment, approval, isolation—even religion. These things aren't necessarily wrong themselves, but good things become dangerous when we expect them to give us what only Jesus can provide. The crowd debated who Jesus was, but Jesus wasn't simply inviting them to discuss Him. He was inviting them to come to Him. We can attend church, read Scripture, serve in ministry, and still fail to actually come to Christ. Jesus invites thirsty people to stop returning to wells that cannot satisfy and come to Him for living water.   Key Takeaways: Where your thirst takes you reveals what you're trusting. Jesus is the source of living water. Only He can give the life, hope, healing, and satisfaction our souls ultimately need. We are rivers, not reservoirs. The life of Christ within us is meant to overflow into the lives of others. Whatever fills you will eventually overflow from you. Ask what your words, attitudes, actions, and relationships reveal about the well you're drinking from. Good things can become bad wells. Work, achievement, family, food, entertainment, approval, control, and even religion can become substitutes for Christ. Don't just come to church—come to Jesus. Religious activity cannot replace a relationship with Christ. Ask questions to seek truth, not to discredit Jesus. Your disappointment with God can send you toward another well. Instead of running away, bring that disappointment back to Him. Jesus exposes our sin so that we can find life, not so that we remain trapped in guilt and shame. Repentance means honestly bringing our brokenness to Christ and trusting Him to forgive, heal, and free us. Whatever well you drink from will eventually overflow from your life. Run to Jesus, receive His living water, and let the life of the Holy Spirit overflow from you into the lives of others.   Gospel Response:  Jesus doesn't expose our thirst to condemn us. He exposes our thirst because He wants to give us life. Jesus Christ came and lived the life we couldn't live, died the death we deserved, and rose from the dead so that we can have new life and receive the Holy Spirit. Yet we continually search for life, satisfaction, identity, and healing everywhere else.  The invitation is simple: Come. See. Believe. Repent. Receive. Be honest with Jesus about the well you've been running to. Confess where you've tried to find satisfaction apart from Him. Surrender what you've been holding onto and return to the One who says: “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” Jesus doesn't simply offer something to satisfy your thirst.     09.27.26 Summary - Truly Series John 6 & 7   Main Question: When following Jesus becomes difficult—when His words are hard, His calling is costly, or you don't understand—will you remain with Him or walk away?         Summary: In John 6:60–7:36, many of Jesus' disciples hear His teaching and respond, “This teaching is hard. Who can accept it?” Eventually, many turn back and stop following Him. But when Jesus asks the Twelve if they also want to leave, Peter responds, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life.”  That contrast reveals the heart of the sermon: faith isn't about perfectly understanding everything Jesus says or perfectly obeying everything He asks. It's about remaining with the Perfect One when following Him is hard. Peter didn't understand everything, and he certainly wasn't perfect. He would struggle, fail, and even deny Jesus three times. Yet he kept coming back to Christ. Judas, on the other hand, walked closely with Jesus, witnessed His miracles, heard His teaching, and participated in ministry—but ultimately betrayed Him. Being near Jesus is not the same as knowing and trusting Jesus. John 7 continues the contrast. Jesus' brothers wanted Him to seek a public platform and recognition, but Jesus remained committed to the Father's will. Even when the crowds misunderstood Him and religious leaders opposed Him, Jesus continued speaking truth and seeking the Father's glory rather than His own. Following Jesus will sometimes challenge what we think, what we want, and how we want to live. The call isn't to have perfect theology, perfect obedience, or perfect faith. The call is to remain near Jesus, trust Him, and allow His truth to transform us.   Key Takeaways: Faith remains when following Jesus gets hard. The question isn't whether difficult moments will come, but whether we will stay with Christ when they do. You don't have to understand everything to remain faithful. Hard teachings can be wrestled with while staying near Jesus The goal isn't perfection—it's staying near the Perfect One. Proximity to Jesus isn't the same as faith in Jesus. Judas walked with Jesus and witnessed His ministry yet ultimately betrayed Him. Knowing about Jesus isn't the same as knowing Jesus. Theology, ministry, service, and church attendance cannot replace a relationship with Christ. Don't trade the Father's will for the world's platform. Jesus sought His Father's glory rather than recognition from people. Faith should grow in community. When our faith is weak, God can use the faith of other believers to encourage us. Failure doesn't have to mean abandonment. Peter failed repeatedly, but he returned to Jesus and was restored. Grace meets us when we struggle. Our salvation rests on what Jesus has done, not on our ability to follow Him perfectly.  When you fall, get back in line and follow Jesus. Don't allow guilt or shame to convince you to walk away.  When following Jesus is hard, you don't need perfect understanding or perfect obedience—you need to remain near the Perfect One. Where else would we go? Jesus has the words of eternal life.   Gospel Response:  When Jesus calls us to hard things, we will sometimes struggle. We will misunderstand. We will fail. But the gospel is not that we perfectly follow Jesus. The gospel is that Jesus perfectly accomplished what was necessary to save us. Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn't live. He took up His cross when we struggle to take up ours. He died for our sin and rose again so that when we fail, His grace and mercy are there to forgive and restore us.  So when following Jesus becomes difficult, don't run away because you aren't perfect. Stay near Him. When you don't understand—remain. When obedience is difficult—remain. When you fail—return. When faith feels weak—stay near Jesus. Like Peter, we can say: “Lord, to whom will we go?     09.20.26 Summary - Truly Series John 6   Main Question: What are you trusting to satisfy you—and can you trust Jesus enough to find everything you need in Him?        Summary: In John 6:32–59, Jesus continues confronting a crowd focused on physical bread. They had seen His miracles and experienced His provision, yet they still wanted more and better. Jesus redirects their attention away from temporary things and makes a powerful declaration: “I am the bread of life.” Throughout John, people repeatedly focus on the physical—the wine, the water, the food, the miracles—while Jesus continually points them toward a greater spiritual reality. Physical things can sustain us temporarily, but only Jesus gives eternal life and satisfies the deepest hunger and thirst of our souls. Jesus calls us to believe in Him. This faith is more than knowing facts about Jesus. It is relational, involves our whole lives—our minds, hearts, and actions—and continues growing through discipleship and Christian community. But when we struggle to let go of worldly things, the answer isn't more guilt, shame, or trying harder. Our hope rests in Christ's faithfulness, not our perfection. Jesus holds His people securely. We don't give things up merely to become better people; as we come and see the glory and grace of Christ, we discover that He is far greater than what we've been holding onto. The goal isn't simply to give up everything. It's to find everything in Christ.   Key Takeaways: Jesus is the Bread of Life. Temporary things sustain us for a moment; Christ gives eternal life. The goal isn't simply giving things up—it's finding everything in Christ. Faith is more than intellectual belief. It involves what we know, what we love, and how we live. Our faith can grow. We don't need perfect faith before coming to Jesus; Christ graciously grows and matures us. Our security rests in Jesus, not ourselves. He promises not to lose those who belong to Him. Grace is greater than guilt and shame. Our failures don't change the perfection of Christ or His ability to forgive. Don't turn God's blessings into replacements for God. Money, success, relationships, comfort, and other good things cannot provide eternal satisfaction. Faith was never meant to grow in isolation. God uses discipleship and Christian community to strengthen our faith. Come and see. When we truly see the glory, goodness, grace, and mercy of Jesus, the things of this world begin to lose their hold on us. The way you see yourself isn't necessarily the way Jesus sees you. In Christ, we can bring our struggles to Him without living under condemnation, guilt, and shame. Don't give up the things of this world simply to prove your faith. Come and see Jesus until you realize that what you're holding onto can never compare to what you have in Him.    Gospel Response:  Jesus is the living bread who came down from heaven. He gave His flesh—His very life—for the life of the world. Jesus lived the perfect life we could not live, died the death we deserved, and rose from the dead so that we can rise to eternal life with Him. Our salvation does not rest on having perfect faith or perfectly overcoming every struggle. Jesus was perfect because we are not. So when guilt and shame tell you that you've failed too many times, can't surrender your struggle, or aren't worthy enough to come to God, come and see Jesus instead. Bring Him the sin, success, money, comfort, relationships, desires, or anything else you've been looking to for satisfaction. Don't surrender it simply to check another religious box. See the goodness, glory, grace, and mercy of Jesus until your heart realizes that what He offers is far greater. Come to Him. Believe in Him. Find your satisfaction in Him.     Ep 288 - SERMON - Truly: What do you want from Jesus—and would you still want Him if He didn't give you the thing you wanted?  John 6:1-21

    09.13.26 Summary - Truly Series John 6:1-21   Main Question: What do you want from Jesus—and would you still want Him if He didn't give you the thing you wanted?     Summary: In John 6:1–31, the crowd witnesses two incredible miracles: Jesus feeds thousands with five loaves and two fish, and He walks on water. But the passage reveals a deeper problem: the people became more interested in what Jesus could provide than in Jesus Himself. When the disciples looked at the enormous crowd, they saw what they didn't have—there wasn't enough money or food. Jesus showed them that He is more than enough. Everyone ate until they were satisfied, and there were even leftovers. Yet the crowd missed the point. They wanted to make Jesus king because He could provide food, and then they followed Him looking for more. Jesus exposed their hearts: they weren't seeking Him because the signs had revealed who He was; they were seeking Him because their stomachs had been filled. We can do the same thing. We can want Jesus to be our healer, provider, problem-solver, or miracle worker without allowing Him to truly be God and King of our lives. We can measure God's goodness by whether He gives us the outcome we want. The miracles are signs, but the signs are not the destination—they point us to Jesus. Our faith must move from asking God for more bread to realizing that what we ultimately need is Christ Himself. Key Takeaways: Jesus is more than enough. The disciples saw scarcity; Jesus provided abundance. The miracle isn't the point. Miracles are signs meant to point us to Jesus. Don't seek the provision and miss the Provider. The crowd pursued Jesus because He filled their stomachs, not because they understood who He was. Our role is faith. When the crowd asked what work they should do, Jesus answered that they should believe in the One God sent. Don't measure God's goodness by His provisions. God is still good when the answer isn't what we wanted. Be careful not to make miracles into idols. Give thanks for God's provision without allowing the provision to become more important than God. Worldly focus produces worldly desires. The crowd wanted an earthly king because they were focused on earthly needs. Jesus isn't here to serve our agenda. He came to accomplish the Father's mission, and His plan for our lives may look different from the outcome we want. God's presence is greater than an easier life. Jesus may not remove us from every difficult situation, but He is with us through it. Faith says “hallelujah” either way. If God provides what we ask for, praise Him. If He doesn't, we can still trust and praise Him. Don't just want something from Jesus. Want Jesus. The provision may change, the miracle may not come the way you expect, but Christ Himself is more than enough.    Gospel Response:  The world wanted to make Jesus king by force, but Jesus chose the cross. The crowd wanted bread so they could live longer; Jesus gave His life so they could live forever. Jesus didn't come merely to make our lives easier or give us everything we ask for. He came to save us. He died for our sins and rose again so that we could be forgiven, receive eternal life, and have God Himself with us—even in the hardest seasons. So ask yourself: If Jesus doesn't give me the miracle, healing, relationship, provision, or outcome I want, will I still trust Him? Fix your eyes not on what God gives you, but on God Himself.     09.06.26 Summary - Truly Series John 5:19-47   Main Question: Do you simply know what God can do—or do you truly believe He can work in your life?    Summary: In John 5:19–47, Jesus confronts religious leaders who knew Scripture, understood God's laws, and knew the stories of His miraculous power—yet when God was working right in front of them through Jesus, they rejected Him. Jesus makes it clear that He and the Father are working together. He has the authority and power to give life, even raising the dead. Eternal life isn't merely a future promise; through Christ, we can pass from death to life now. The danger for us is the same one the religious leaders faced: we can know a great deal about God without truly trusting God. We can study Scripture, attend church, know theology, and remember what God has done for others while still doubting that He can redeem our own brokenness. Scripture was always meant to point us to Jesus. Knowledge alone cannot save us—Jesus does. God is still working, still restoring, still redeeming, and still bringing life out of death. God didn't give us facts to transform our lives—He gave us His Son. You've heard what God can do. You've seen what God can do. The question is: Do you believe He can do it in you?  Gospel Response:  Jesus did not come expecting us to fix ourselves. He came to save us. He entered our broken world, lived the life we could never live, experienced rejection and suffering, died on the cross for our sins, and rose from the dead so that we can have eternal life—not simply someday, but new life in Him beginning now. Stop trusting merely in what you know about Jesus and trust Jesus Himself. Give Him the brokenness, addiction, pain, relationships, fear, or circumstances you've been trying to fix yourself.     08.30.26 Summary - Truly Series John 4:46-54   Main Question: When you see God at work around you, how will you respond—with faith or rejection?    Summary: In John 4:43–54 and John 5:1–18, two men experience the miraculous power of Jesus but respond very differently. The royal official was desperate for his dying son. He traveled to Jesus, trusted His word, and went home before seeing the miracle. When he discovered his son had been healed at the exact moment Jesus spoke, he recognized God's work, believed, and his household believed with him. The paralyzed man had spent 38 years focused on the pool he believed could heal him. Jesus came to him, healed him, and told him to walk. Yet instead of responding with faith, the man ultimately reported Jesus to the religious leaders, contributing to their rejection and persecution of Christ. Both men experienced a miracle, but the miracle itself wasn't the point—it was a sign pointing to Jesus. God is continually at work, and we must slow down, open our eyes and ears, recognize His work, and respond in faith rather than allowing our expectations, distractions, or interpretations to keep us from seeing Him. Don't become so focused on the “pool” that you miss the Savior. The paralyzed man's attention remained fixed on the physical solution while Jesus stood before him. Don't force God to fit your expectations. The religious leaders rejected Jesus partly because His work didn't fit their interpretation of how God should act. Physical miracles point toward a greater spiritual reality. Our greatest need is not temporary physical healing but eternal life in Christ. Give God the credit. Don't become so distracted or self-reliant that you miss His work around you. Faith should lead to proclamation. The royal official's encounter with Jesus didn't stop with him—his household believed too. God is at work. The question is not simply whether we will see it, but whether what we see will lead us to believe and follow Jesus. Gospel Response:  The greatest miracle is not simply physical healing—it is the new and eternal life Jesus offers. Jesus is God in the flesh. He lived the life we could not live, died the death we deserved, and rose from the grave so that we can live. On the cross, He completed the work of salvation for us: “It is finished.” Even when we don't understand what God is doing—and whether the physical miracle we desperately want comes or doesn't—we can trust that God is still working. Look. Listen. Recognize what God is doing.
