    Leadership in a Time of Crisis

    This episode is primarily for providers who provide housing for individuals and provide care 24/7, but there are some good tidbits for everyone here.  In the cares industry, it’s not a matter of if there will be some sort of emergency, but when. When you’re dealing with human lives and caring for real people, there will be leaks, fires, broken windows, etc. It doesn’t do anyone any good to wallow and try to place blame when there’s a crisis to be dealt with. You would’ve had to put together a disaster plan in order to get your facility license, but that’s likely not going to be comprehensive enough for every emergency situation. As the leader in your agency, your staff will be looking to you for direction and it’s incredibly important that you know what to do when disaster strikes.     Leading with Empathy

    I believe that businesses that have highly effective leadership will outperform businesses that don’t. Unfortunately, leadership skills aren’t at the top of the list of things to learn when starting a business. Even the professional organizations I’m part of will focus on the regulatory side of things, bringing on more team members, growing revenue, and those sort of things, but how does one become an effective leader? There are several elements you need when developing the necessary leadership skills to improve yourself and pass on to your team members. The empathy piece is so important because as care providers, we don’t have the luxury of completely separating personal issues from work. There will be times when you need to help guide an employee or team member through some hard times so that they can thrive in the company and still provide top notch care. If you want to be a highly effective leader, with teams that are growing and thriving, your mindset needs to be in the right place. It’s important to check in with your own wellbeing and to check in with your team so that they know that you care.     Embracing the Pivot in Life and Business

    We all have some sort of experience with trying to find balance between life and work. Today I’m talking specifically about pivoting. Most of us like to have a plan before we move forward with taking action. What happens when the plan doesn’t, well, go to plan? Maybe you run into some rules and regulations, or something causes you to lose confidence and make you want to make adjustments.  How do we reflect when the plan doesn’t work right? How do we embrace the pivot that comes from the plan falling apart? When you’ve put in the work but the result you got wasn’t the result you expected, something needs to shift.  It’s not time to give up - it’s time to take stock, regroup, reassess, but know that the drive you have to make it work is still there. Your belief in your ability to succeed will take you farther than anything else.     Time To Jump with Rontoya

    I’m excited to visit with a client of mine, Rontoya. Rontoya is a CNA who got into community housing through the unlicensed route. In that situation, basically all you are is a landlord providing the housing and nothing else. She actually had to go through an investigation for trying to help her residents with more than just housing. After trying different ways to get everything done without getting in trouble, she figured it was time to just play ball and get licensed.
