Every year, about 65 DPhil students start a life changing experience in the Nuffield Department of Medicine in Oxford. The Department offers highly competitive NDM Doctoral Prize Studentship to outstanding candidates of any nationality.

    MORU Students

    Studentships at the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit in Bangkok, Thailand MORU currently hosts DPhil PhD and MSc students from Mahidol’s Faculty of Tropical Medicine, the Nuffield Dept of Medicine at Oxford and the UK’s Open University. We welcome inquiries and applications from students around the world. We offer students opportunities in multi-disciplinary research areas such as malaria, microbiology, pharmacology, mathematical & economic modelling, epidemiology, bioethics and community engagement. In this video, you’ll hear from some of our current students about why living and studying in SE Asia and at MORU is such a great experience. Interested?     NDM Studentships

    Every year, about 60 DPhil students start a life changing experience in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford. Applications are invited for the NDM Prize Studentships in October each year. The application deadline closes in early January each year, and interviews take place towards the end of January. Candidates are judged on the basis of their academic and research potential. The Prize Studentships are open to graduate students from all countries. Candidates should submit an online application by the deadline.

    Steinar Halldorsson

    Every year, about 60 DPhil students start a life changing experience in the Nuffield Department of Medicine in Oxford. Steinar Halldorsson, from Iceland, joined the University of Oxford in 2013 after studying Biochemistry at University College London (UCL). Steinar is affiliated with Wadham College and works on the Structural determinants of phlebovirus host cell entry under the supervision of Professor Juha Huiskonen and Dr Thomas Bowden.

    Sophie Andrews

    Every year, about 60 DPhil students start a life changing experience in the Nuffield Department of Medicine in Oxford. Sophie Andrews, from the United Kingdom, joined the University of Oxford in 2012 after studying Molecular Cell Biology at the University of York. Sophie is affiliated with St Edmund Hall and works on adaptive immune evasion in clinically latent HIV-1 and HIV-2 infection under the supervision of Professor Sarah Rowland-Jones and Professor Tao Dong.

    Hilary Martin

    We've asked Hilary Martin from Australia why she decided to do a DPhil project in the Nuffield Department of Medicine. She moved to Oxford as she was keen to work with Professor Peter Donnelly due to her interest in genetics. In particular she has a keen interest in individual differences between people and the focus of her DPhil is on evolutionary genetics. She thinks that the college system at the University of Oxford is really good as it is easy to make new friends and find many extra-curricular activities.

    Xi Li

    We've asked Xi Li from China why he decided to do a DPhil project in the Nuffield Department of Medicine. In his final year as a Junior Doctor in China Xi saw a lot of cancer patients but there was only limited availability of clinical treatments. This experience motivated him to research HBV hepatocellular carcinoma. He likes the environment in the Department and enjoys the traditions associated with Oxford like punting.

    Sarah Dixon-Clarke

    We've asked Sarah Dixon-Clarke from the UK why she decided to do a DPhil project in the Nuffield Department of Medicine. During her undergraduate degree she undertook a BBSRC summer studentship, which enabled her to get some research experience in a lab. She is now doing a DPhil in the Structural Genomics Consortium, an NDM unit. She found that the DPhil project on offer and the Department particularly appealling, due to the extensive experience in X-ray crystallography - a technique that she was keen to learn. She thinks Oxford is a beautiful city to live in and really enjoys college life.

    Min Sun

    We've asked Min Sun from China why she decided to do a DPhil project in the Nuffield Department of Medicine. Min first had the chance to experience life in Oxford during a 3 month internship in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, which enabled her to develop her interest in molecular biology. She is currenty studying for a DPhil in the field of hypoxia research. She believes that the research environment in Oxford is excellent and enjoys not only the academic atmosphere but also living in the city of Oxford.
