    After Hours w/ Phoebe Laird, Elise McDermott & Ailsa Coulson: 28 August, 2026

    After Hours is a new exhibition bringing together the practices of Phoebe Laird and Elise McDermott, currently on at Window Gallery.  Phoebe Laird is a Te Whangnui-a-Tara-based artist whose practice observes cycles of growth, transformation, and urban decay in our shared spaces, questioning how material and place hold value through bringing found material into sculptural form.  Elise McDermott is a Tāmaki-based artist whose sculptural and installation practice uses found objects and materials in an exploration of our domestic and commercial environment, bringing our everyday encounters with nostalgia, memory, and cultures of consumerism into question.  In After Hours, Laird and McDermott continue exploring these respective interests in their practices, focusing on our continuous relationships with infrastructure and discarded objects. An almost site specific encounter in the Window Gallery space, the works speak to their surrounding environment on the university campus, yet have a universal quality to them too. McDermott looking to the concept of convenience, and Laird to that of the streetlight, the artists’ works converge and diverge beautifully within the space, prompting a reframing of viewers' relationships with the interior and exterior, the public and personal, the discarded and the cherished.  Sof caught up with Elise and Phoebe, as well as curator Ailsa Coulson, about After Hours and their overall practices.
