    99 Years: Episode 1

The slogan for the state of Maine is, “the way life should be.” Known for lobsters and lighthouses, the state is also known for something else. Maine is the whitest state. And that’s not an accident.

The reason involves Presidents and robber barons, a forgotten time of Black American progress and a nation-wide conspiracy to help the south rise again.

But this isn’t just a chronicle of racial struggle or a tale of lost histories. It’s a story about black experience and what happens when people try to account for the past.

Important and timely

Absolutely riveting and often disturbing, this podcast from the multi-talented Samuel James is a must hear for Mainers and anybody who wants to understand the racist history of the whitest state in the U.S.

Super high quality

Fascinating history of racism in Maine from 99 years ago thru today. Thank you for educating me.

This should be required listening for anyone who thinks racism is all in the past and doesn’t continue to harm and endure.

So good!

Amazing narration that combats the narrative that there isn’t racism in Maine, a history for all Mainers & that all Mainers should listen to
