Oh, that You would rend the heavens! That You would come down! That the mountains might shake at Your presence As fire burns wood, as fire causes water to boil to make Your name known to Your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at Your presence! When You did awesome things for which we did not look, You came down, the mountains shook at Your presence. For since the beginning of the world Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the one who waits for Him. You meet him who rejoices and does righteousness, who remembers You in Your ways. You are indeed angry, for we have sinned in these ways we continue; and we need to be saved. (Isaiah 64:1-5) In 1904, Christians in Wales witnessed the rapid spread of worldliness and humanistic philosophy in their land, which produced a deadening effect in the churches. One church leader observed, "While the church slept, the enemy sowed tares among the wheat. It will take an outpouring of the Spirit from on high to uproot them, and save our land from becoming prey to atheism and ungodliness." In response to the conditions around them, Welsh pastors began a season of intense prayer. As they prayed, they began to experience God's power in their churches. Pastor Joseph Jenkins of New Quay Church organized a special conference in January 1904, in which many in his church began experiencing personal revival. The spirit of revival continued under the preaching of Evangelist Seth Joshua. Later that year, Joshua preached in the town of Blaenannerch. During his meetings there were students from the nearby Methodist Academy. Evan Roberts was one of the academy students who attended. On Thursday, September 29, 1904, the evangelist concluded his preaching by, crying out in Welsh, "Lord, bend us." The Holy Spirit said to Evan Roberts, "That is what you need." Evan began praying, "O Lord, bend me." He felt himself overwhelmed by the love of God. Rom. 5:8 came to his mind: "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." The motto of the revival in Wales was born out of Roberts' experience that day: "Bend the church and save the world." Though still young, he became God's agent to carry the spirit of revival throughout his homeland.
