    #92 - Kevin Quinn from heart surgery to 2:22 marathon, coaching, and pacing the Olympic marathon trails

    In episode 92, I speak with Kevin Quinn, a father of three. A 2.22.12 marathon runner and head coach at Team Real Runners.

    Kevin was one of the pacers for the Great Britain marathon trails for the Tokyo Olympics, where Steph Davis won and earned a qualifying place. To listen to the conversation with Steph look at episode 89.

    In 2016, after running 2 hrs 25 mins at the 2015 London Marathon Kev found out he had 4 holes in his heart (largest being 1.78cm) and had to have heart repair surgery to close the 4 holes in his heart. This meant he lost 20-25% oxygen for every heartbeat.

    The operation was a success and despite getting older, he is now running faster than ever, winning the New York City virtual marathon.

    We talk about the impact his father and sister passing away has on him today. It’s a great and rounded conversation showing the different sides of a runner’s life.

    #91 - Fly Bizzy (Yusuf Bizimana) on the process of working to be the best

    In episode 91, I speak with Yusuf Bizimana aka Fly Bizzy. He is currently running at the university of Texas for their track and field team and is doing well.

    I came across him when he posted a 5k on his YouTube channel. And his personality and mindset really shines through.

    In this conversation we talk about:

    The importance of mindset
    The importance of community and  teamwork
    The mental process during training
    Accountability and being honest with yourself
    An insight into competing against the best
    How he manages the post race debrief
    Balancing running with college
    His Olympic aspirations this year
    Putting himself outside his comfort zone
    And much more...

    This is hands down one of my favourite conversations. I’m looking forward to seeing the heights he will go towards.

    This conversation was recorded shortly before she placed first in the female category and seventh overall in the inaugural Cocodona 250.

    Plus we discussed the runner’s mindset, the Barkley marathon keeping the joy in running, managing injury plus much more. I enjoyed this conversation, and I believe you will too.

    #89 - Steph Davies and Aoife Cooke on qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics

    #89 - Steph Davies and Aoife Cooke on qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics

    As a fan of the sport, I was excited to speak with the following two athletes.

    Steph Davies won the British Olympic marathon trials and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics and will represent Great Britain, she finished in 2:27:16 (this interview starts at 2:45).

    Aoife Cooke won the Cheshire Elite Marathon and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics and will represent Ireland, she finished in 2:28:36 (this interview starts at 24:17). To listen to the previous conversation with Aoife check out episode 12.

    Both athletes overcame different challenges within their running careers, which can get forgotten when both athletes looked in such good form earning the Olympic marathon qualifying times.

    In both conversations we dive into the training build up, the race, and the work leading towards Olympics.

    I wish them both a strong Olympic build up and great marathon race experience.

    #88 - Jon Hilling on earning a London marathon championship place

    #88 - Jon Hilling on earning a London marathon championship place

    This conversation is with Jon Hilling, a runner and at the time of the interview is a nutrition student. We dive into some things that work for him when fuelling his marathon training.

    We talk about mental health and the impact that sport can play in ones well-being. However if you’re experiencing any mental health challenges, these are some UK resources available to support you:

    Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you need a response immediately, it's best to call on the phone. This number is FREE to call. ☎ 116 123 (UK) 116 123 (ROI)
    MIND, the mental health charity: ☎ 0300 123 3393
    Rethink Mental Illness: ☎ 0808 801 0525

    Jon swam competitively at a national level in his youth, before her turned his attention towards running. He used the same diligence to run in the high 3 hour range to then running a marathon PR of 2:39:55 at the 2020 Dorney Lake Marathon, and earning a London championship place in the process.

    We discuss what it was like for us running a marathon in the new race format, adhering to the COVID-19 global pandemic, in less than ideal weather.

    Plus we discuss much more about what a runner’s life means to him.

    #87 - Nathan Martin on setting a marathon PR and breaking a national record

    #87 - Nathan Martin on setting a marathon PR and breaking a national record

    This conversation is with Nathan Martin, who ran 2:11:05 at the Marathon Project in December 20 2020. Not only was this a PR but Nathan broke Herm Atkins’ record of 2:11:52, by running the fastest marathon ever run by a Black man born in the United States. This record stood since 1979.

    I recorded this episode, shortly after the Marathon Project, but I held it back because there were a few other podcasts, and I wanted to give this episode some clear space once the dust had settled.

    In this conversation we discussed:

    The importance that teamwork and community play as an athlete;
    Bouncing back from the Olympic trails marathon;
    How to keep enjoyment in training;
    How to keep the training not just focused on solely running fast;
    A race breakdown of the Marathon project;
    What does potential look like;
    The importance of mantras.

Incredible podcast

Marcus has not a regular interview podcast. That’s an amazing conversation between two people. Therefore it is not insight of just one persons journey but at least two. Such a motivational and inspiring podcast from which one can learn so much!
