In collaboration with Institute for the Future AARP Futurecasting has crafted descriptions of four different possible external environments that AARP could face by 2030. The four scenarios are called Great Refocus, Creative Fusion, Vicious Cycles and Rule of Tech Titans. Each has different features brought about by changes in technology and society.

    Rule of Tech Titans describes a world that is profit-driven, innovative and mercenary, splitting into a world of haves and have nots.  In this world deployment of technology is unconstrained by any regulatory guardrails and driven by large companies.  The social fabric along with institutions are eroded and coopted by corporate ambition.

    Vicious Cycles

    Vicious Cycles describes a world that is controlling, suspicious, inefficient, devolving towards lower quality of life for most. In this world deployment of technology is highly regulated and coopted by government while institutions and social cohesion swiftly erode.

    Creative Fusion describes a world that is open, collaborative and creative--self-organizing towards new and improved ways of operating.  In this world deployment of technology is rapid and unregulated, but the social fabric is stronger because of new ways of interacting like crowdsourcing. And institutions are being reinvented and strengthened.
