Faith Clash: Discussing the Belief Divide between Believers and Non-Believers with Edith Gray and B. Simone

Have you ever questioned the very foundations of your spirituality, or pondered the journey others take in their quest for faith? Join me, Tiffany D Cross, as we unravel the dynamic and deeply personal narratives of Black spirituality, belief, and the evolving relationship with the church. Our esteemed guests, Edith Gray and B Simone, enrich our conversation with their contrasting experiences – Edith's shift towards scientific reasoning after a lifetime in the church, and B Simone's recent embrace of faith through life's hurdles.

Navigating through the landmarks of life can dramatically shift our spiritual compass. We grapple with the pain inflicted by fallible humans within religious institutions, while seeking an undiluted connection with the divine that goes beyond doctrine. Reflect with us on how morality and purpose take shape both inside and outside the realm of organized religion. From the tangible impact of prayer in my own life to the ethical compass guiding non-believers, we engage in a candid exploration of how we find meaning in the seen and the unseen.

Confronting the blurred lines between faith and fanaticism, this episode doesn't shy away from the tough questions. How do we distinguish mainstream religion from the manipulative grasp of cults? What role does intuition play in our spiritual choices? We dissect these intricate themes, offering a raw look at the spaces where belief, faith, and the quest for a higher truth collide. Don't miss this authentic dive into the heart of what it means to believe, across generations and beyond the pews.

Discovering the Real American Dream: Traditional Career vs. The Freelance Workforce Feat. Imani Blair and Justice Tanya R. Kennedy

Discovering the Real American Dream: Traditional Career vs. The Freelance Workforce Feat. Imani Blair and Justice Tanya R. Kennedy

Considering where I grew up, I couldn't help but reflect on the evolution of the American Dream, its impact on my life, and its varied resonance within the black community. From the Bronx to the bench, the Honorable Justice Tanya R. Kennedy joins me to share her inspiring climb to the judiciary from a single-parent household. Adding to our generational tapestry, dynamic entrepreneur Imani Blair illuminates the highs and lows of her eclectic career pursuits, from real estate gambles to the creative hustle of podcasting and music. Together, we dissect the layers of ambition and happiness, examining the changing face of success and fulfillment.

The conversation turns to the financial tightrope many of us walk. Imani's tales of her sporadic, yet substantial, freelance income injects a dose of reality into the dreams of those chasing non-traditional career paths. Amidst this, we underscore the paramount importance of financial literacy and proactive retirement planning, drawing on Justice Kennedy's wisdom of long-term professional commitment and the less discussed significance of Associate programs.

To cap off our journey, we navigate the transformative rivers of education and career decisions. My personal hurdles – from the sting of academic expulsion due to financial barriers to carving a space for myself as a minority in media – contrast Imani's flexible leap from aspiring recording artist to podcasting success, offering an honest look at the shifting educational landscape. We question the future of higher education in a world where acquired skills are rapidly overriding degrees, and look ahead to how the evolving job market and generational perspectives on work-life balance are reshaping what we strive for and how we get there.

Listen in as we navigate the multifaceted world of dating across generations, discussing how our approach to finding love evolves with time. From my personal transformation of dating expectations – once a direct hunt for marriage in my twenties to a journey of self-discovery in my thirties – to my current state of contentment where I've learned that the most enduring relationship is with oneself. It's All Pro-Choice: Discussing the Motherhood Divide Feat. Mandii B. and Sandra Tate

It's All Pro-Choice: Discussing the Motherhood Divide Feat. Mandii B. and Sandra Tate

Motherhood is often painted in broad, idyllic strokes, but the reality is a complex mosaic of joy, sacrifice, and sometimes, the conscious choice to opt out. My heart was heavy with reflection as I sat down with Mandii B., a vibrant media personality who chooses to chart a course free from the restraints of parenthood, and Sandra Tate, whose eight decades have woven a story of love, loss, and the fierce desire to nurture a family that her own mother could not provide. Together, we peeled back the layers of societal expectations and personal desires that shape the multifaceted experience of being a mother—or deciding not to be.

Navigating the waters of motherhood or the decision to remain childless is no easy feat, and we didn't shy away from the tough questions. A guest mother, who cracked the code to balancing a high-powered tech career with the demands of raising children, shared her insights, reinforcing the undeniable importance of a tight-knit support network. Through the sharing of my own journey towards self-reliance, we painted a picture of the intricate dance between independence and the longing for connection that influences many women's views on motherhood.

As our conversation flowed, we honored the gravity of the maternal bond and celebrated the triumphs of women who stand by their decision to forgo this path. Emotions ran high as I voiced a tribute to the profound influence of my mother and to all who provide life lessons, support, and comfort. We wrapped up the episode weaving a tapestry of respect for all women and their right to choose, with a special acknowledgment to the unique experiences of black women in the context of autonomy and love.

Love the show!

This is an amazing concept of a show! I’ve always felt like I could relate to both the generation before and after me, and this podcast does a great job in meeting the two. There are so many more conversations to be had and I can’t wait!

Darth Potus ,

Faith Clash

The Faith Clash discussion really struck a chord with me. I grew up going to church and Sunday school religiously (pun intended). But eventually critical thinking overtook the Bible stories: we know it took 14 billion years not seven days to create the universe; that Noah couldn’t have saved all the animals of world even if he had an aircraft cartier; and who did Cain marry if he, his dead brother, and Adam and Eve were the only people in the world?

But given our history in this country, could you fault Black people for turning their eyes heavenward during our bleakest days? Ultimately, no one came to our rescue except us, not an old white dude standing on a cloud.

My only disappointment was that B Simone couldn’t or wouldn’t articulate her encounter with God. Still, there’s value in faith because as Edith hinted, we are all ultimately made from star dust and we will someday understand how that brings us all together.

This podcast slaps! 👏

It is timely, on point, and a much needed content vehicle that amplifies black women's diverse voices and thoughts. Thank you Tiffany for seeing the paucity of these conversations and responding with a rich, well thought out, carefully crafted podcast!
