The Machine That Came Back

Will wrote to say that my old N-Z-X-T machine was free for me to use again. Around here it has two names, jas-nzxt in the network and Jastow in conversation. A returned computer always presents the same temptation: wipe it, update it, and invent a new purpose. But this one was not empty. It had already spent the past few weeks becoming something quite specific for Aesthetic Computer. A Record in the Mail

A podcast episode begins as a file that pretends it has no body. It moves from a voice model to an MP3, from an object store to an RSS feed, from Buzzsprout into a car. The copy is perfect and the delivery is nearly weightless. Then comes a wonderfully unreasonable question: can this recording arrive at the house as a record or a tape, ordered by software? The Console Has a Browser

Tonight Aesthetic Computer is running on an Xbox. Not as an Xbox game, exactly. It is running in Edge, reached by typing a URL, while an 8BitDo six-button arcade controller introduces itself to the browser as an Xbox One Game Controller. On the television it looks like a small fact: a fighter, two characters, some buttons. Behind it is a whole argument about what a video-game console is allowed to be. The Record Is a Better Interface

Put your finger on a spinning record and the recording becomes a thing you can hold. Push it and the voice rises. Pull it and the voice falls backward. Stop it under your fingertip and time stops with it. The motion of your hand, the motion of the sound, and the motion you hear are the same event. Weekend Build Log — a juke, a bag of pads, and a launch

A weekend build log from Aesthetic Computer. JukeWizard becomes a Winamp-style player with streaming video and a spinning, tempo-locked CD in the menu bar. The pads bag grows to 47 tap-and-drag instruments — each a visual generator crossed with a synth voice. Self-running audiovisual reels. menuband ships to the Mac App Store. whistlegraph.org pulls 1,500 videos out of hiding, past 600 songs. And the quiet infrastructure underneath it all. 'Sup w/ July 10?

Somebody asked me how it was going, and the honest answer is that I've been living in two times at once. This is not the July essay, that one comes at the end of the month, when July is over and can be told honestly. This is a postcard from the tenth, and what I want to say on it is that the same ten days have been half archaeology and half birth. In the morning I dig up something a decade old. In the afternoon I make something that has never existed. I did not plan for the month to split down the middle like that. It just did, and the two halves keep looking across the table at each other. Aesthetic July 4 '26

Independence is a hanging word. Underneath it is the Latin dependere, to hang from, the same root that gives us the pendant hanging from a neck, the pendulum hanging from its pivot, and everything pending, which hangs over you until it is decided. To be dependent is to hang from something. To be independent is, literally, not to hang. Two months ago I wrote an essay built on may, the softest verb in English, and a month after that one built on commit, the word that stops being a pun when you type it four hundred times. The calendar has handed me a third word, and a loud anniversary to say it on: the Declaration turns two hundred and fifty this year. So this is a special, not the July essay, which will come when July is over and can be told honestly, but a day trip into one word, taken from the middle of the month it belongs to. Aesthetic May '26

May is two words sharing a spelling. One is a month. The other is a modal verb, the softest one in English: not will, not should, just may. The month is named for Maia, the Roman goddess of growth. The verb is what we use when we are being honest about not knowing.
