EP #39 (S02) Carmen Mateia: From a WhatsApp Group to Tackling Angola's 'Undermployment' Crisis

What’s the real challenge for Angola’s youth: unemployment or undermployment? Social entrepreneur Carmen Mateia shares her incredible journey from starting a simple WhatsApp group to building an ecosystem that’s connecting thousands of Angolans to real opportunities. Carmen is a dynamic social activist, community leader, and founder of “Na Fila do Pão” (At the bread’s queue). Her work in tackling youth challenges has led to a historic nomination as the first Angolan and first Portuguese-speaking representative for the EMY Africa Awards 2025 in the “Youth Change Maker” category. In this episode, we discuss: * The “Na Fila do Pão” Story: How a low-tech WhatsApp group grew into a powerful company for social change. * The Real Problem: Why “undermployment” is a more critical crisis than unemployment in Angola. * Building the Ecosystem: Carmen’s work with “Fábrica de Sabão” (Soap Factory) to create the physical infrastructure and hubs needed for startups to grow. * Art as Activism: Using cultural projects like the Mau Mau Movement to agitate for social and political change. Accelerating Innovation & Sustaining Futures – Acelera's Impact on Angola's Agri-Food Ecosystem

Join us for an insightful episode of Africa Tech Talks featuring Luimar Silva from Aselera Angola and Soha Nasser from Acelera Agro, as they unveil their pivotal role in nurturing Angola's entrepreneurial landscape and revolutionising its agri-food sector. Discover Acelera Angola's primary mission, founded in 2017, to boost and support a conducive entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem, facilitating the transition of nascent ideas into real, sustainable businesses. Luimar details how Acelera provides comprehensive end-to-end support, from validating solutions and business modelling for new ideas to market expansion and scaling for more mature ventures. They act as a vital bridge, connecting entrepreneurs with the right mentors, specialists, and institutions, offering diverse programs, events, mentorship formats, and even co-working facilities. Learn about their Growth Lab program, specifically designed for seasoned startups to structure their businesses, enhance their appeal to investors, and accelerate their growth. The conversation then shifts to Aselera's broader contribution to Angola's economic development. Luimar explains their focus on job creation, strengthening the private sector, and driving economic diversification away from oil and gas. They address the critical challenge of ensuring business sustainability in a country where much entrepreneurial activity stems from necessity. Soha Nasser introduces Acelera Agro, a powerful spin-off dedicated to transforming the agri-food sector across Angola and Sub-Saharan Africa. She highlights the pressing challenges in this sector, including a dire lack of infrastructure, technical capabilities, and crucially, the need to make agriculture appealing to the youth6. Acelera Agro uniquely replicates Acelera Angola's support model while also operating its own farms, providing hands-on practical experience for agricultural engineering students and experimental grounds for agri-tech entrepreneurs. Furthermore, their food production on these farms ensures a sustainable revenue stream for the organisation. Gain insights into the lessons learned from their engagement with farmers and agripreneurs, particularly the urgent need for improved infrastructure and mechanisation to increase the current low agricultural yield in Sub-Saharan Africa. Soha shares Acelera Agro's personal mission to convince young people that agriculture offers immense potential for growth and innovation, challenging the perception that it is solely linked to poverty. Looking ahead, the discussion explores Acelera's vision for the next 6-24 months, emphasising increased focus on import substitution to reduce Angola's reliance on foreign goods, the development of food processing for added value, and the critical demand for innovative solutions in agricultural logistics and infrastructure. Finally, the episode underscores the transformative role of technology and innovation in agriculture, from biotechnology and improved seeds to IoT, drones, big data, and machine learning, all crucial for enhancing productivity, reducing significant food waste, and ensuring global food security. Don't miss this compelling discussion on how Acelera is building a robust, sustainable future for Angola and beyond, with all their programs being free for entrepreneurs through the support of their partners. 🔗 Connect with the Guests Luimar Silva * 📎 LinkedIn: luimarsilva * 🌍 Project Website: acelerangola.com * 📱 Instagram: @acelera_angola 📎 LinkedIn (Acelera): /company/acelera-angola Soha Nasser * 📎 LinkedIn: soha-nasser * 🌍 Project Website: acelerangola.com/agrowebsite * 📱 Instagram: @acelera_agro LinkedIn (Acelera Agro): /company/acelera-agro Follow Africa Tech Talks * 🌍website - www.africatechtalks.com * 📰newsletter - https://africatechtalks.substack.com/ * X - https://twitter.com/afri_techtalks * Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/africatechtalks/ * LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/africa-tech-talks This is a public episode. #EP 33 (S02): A Tecnologia no Sector Bancário | Vitor Rodrigues da Innovation Makers Labs

DISCLAIMER: This episode was fully recorded in portuguese. Welcome to the podcast! In this episode, we sit down with Vítor Rodrigues, the founder and manager of Innovation Makers, for an insightful discussion on the intersection of technology and banking in Angola, with a keen eye on the broader landscape of financial inclusion across Africa. Vítor walks us through the significant strides Angola has made in its banking infrastructure, highlighting the adoption of modern technologies like QR code payments [05:01], [05:24]. However, he emphasizes that a major hurdle remains: transitioning Angola from a cash-reliant economy to one that embraces digital payments, especially considering that only about 30% of the population currently has access to banking services [06:29], [06:38], [06:59], [07:17]. A key takeaway from our conversation is the importance of understanding the unique needs of the 70% of Angolans who are currently unbanked [07:35], [07:41], [07:48]. Vítor suggests that solutions like mobile wallets and systems for low-value payments could be crucial in bringing them into the financial fold [08:04]. We got into the challenges of digital payment adoption, such as the mechanics of getting money into digital wallets (e.g., through salaries or subsidies) [15:41], [15:50], [16:04] and ensuring these digital funds are easy to use and widely accepted [17:06], [17:20], [17:33]. Vítor stresses that technology alone isn't a silver bullet; incentives and education are vital to convince people of the value of digital financial tools [19:38], [20:09], [20:54]. He also shares lessons from past mobile money initiatives in Angola, noting that while on-the-ground sensitization and simple access points led to success, the discontinuation of such services can erode public trust [24:46], [25:03], [25:11], [25:56], [26:07]. The conversation also touches upon the symbiotic relationship between traditional banks and fintech companies in Angola. Vítor views fintechs not as direct competitors, but as complementary players that can serve niche markets and the unbanked, all under the regulatory oversight of the central bank [30:13], [30:52], [31:26], [31:35], [32:20]. Looking ahead, Vítor sees technology as a fundamental enabler for financial inclusion, breaking down barriers like the need for physical bank branches [33:50], [34:27]. He also anticipates that generational shifts will naturally accelerate the adoption of digital finance [38:28], [38:42]. We also explore the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which Vítor believes should augment human intelligence, enhancing services like self-service options and fraud detection, while acknowledging that AI introduces elements of probability and doubt not present in traditional computing [43:41], [43:50], [44:21], [45:13], [45:57], [46:07], [51:47], [52:42], [53:00]. Finally, Vítor identifies the most significant disruptive force for Africa's future: investing in its people. He argues that empowering individuals is the ultimate driver of change and technology adoption [56:44], [56:52], [57:27].
