    Dirty Pop | Nathan Walters

The late 90's - early 00's were full of pop music groups such as *NSYNC. But what happens when you are steeped in the Christian Faith but love the sweet hooks of pop music? Enter, Plus One. Plus One was designed to be the Christian Music industry's answer to *NSYNC. You could get your pop fix and still worship God win-win. Plus One enjoyed crossover success in the pop charts for several years before deciding to call it quits.

In this latest installment of the Dirty Pop Volume we explore the overall pop genre during the late 90's to early 00's. We will chart an entire genre's rise and fall through the lens of a few unique perspectives

In this specific episode we continue our examination of the band Plus One by talking to Nathan Walters about his musical roots, his experience with Plus One (including a short-lived reboot in 2014!), and his current musical production work.

The Alternative Is... | Travis Shettel

The Alternative Is... | Travis Shettel

Travis has been playing music for about 30 years. Piano lessons started at 6 until the instrument became uncool at the age of 11. Then it was classical guitar, which wasn’t loud enough. Then it was bass, which was fun for a while, but proved to be difficult to use as a writing instrument. Finally, Travis found his way to the electric guitar (keys have been given a second chance) and the creation of hundreds of songs since the mid 90’s.

He is probably most well known for his time as lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of the Boston-based band, Piebald. Started in 1994, PIebald released 5 albums, and toured constantly until the “last shows” in 2008.  - http://www.masqueradeatlanta.com/attraction/travis-shettel-piebald/

I was stoked to get the opportunity to interview Travis for this podcast. The Alt music scene in the mid-00's really shaped my perspective of my youth and my worldview overall. Several of these songs are still anthems for me after all these years. Travis and I dig into all that and more!

In After the Encore Volume 7: The Alternative Is... We explore the world of music through the lens of the artists who helped shape a musical revolution for so many. What lessons still resonate today, and what has changed in the near twenty years since then?

Tune in to find out how these artists answer the questions essential to the essence of the podcast:

    1. What does music mean to you?

    2. How do you quantify success?

    3. And what happens after the music fades?

Be sure to catch Piebald's upcoming tour dates:

    12/14 - Hamden, CT
    12/15 - Lancaster, PA

    B-Sides | Garrett Owen

    B-Sides | Garrett Owen

Texas-born Garrett Owen had a musical awakening at age 14 that manifested as an intense desire to learn guitar and an insatiable love for all things heavy metal. Eventually, he began exploring other genres, diligently saving his weekly allowance to afford mail-order CDs to satisfy his typical childhood curiosity. But, Owen’s childhood was anything but typical.

Instead of Little League and sleepovers, Owen’s earliest memories involve frequent trips across the Serengeti and backyard wildlife most of us only experience at our local zoos. The son of church-building missionaries, he grew up in Tanzania and Kenya, riding on the luggage rack of the family’s Nissan Patrol, with vast clear skies above him and gazelles running beside. After leaving Africa, the family completed a stint in Ecuador before Owen’s parents moved the family back to Texas. Life as he knew it became a difficult endeavor; rimmed with the sharp edges of reality in an unfamiliar place, his attempts to settle into a culture he didn’t understand resulted in distress and a suicide attempt - a far cry from the idyllic landscape of his upbringing. - https://garrett-owen.com/band

I have always enjoyed the artistic nature of Garrett's music and was thrilled to get the opportunity to discuss it with him on this episode.

While this episode is not part of a larger Volume we are releasing it under the moniker of "B-Sides" since it is a bonus track just for you.

Tune in to find out how Garrett Owen answers the questions essential to the essence of the podcast:

    1. What does music mean to you?

    2. How do you quantify success?

    3. And what happens after the music fades?

Who Runs The World? | Mary Gauthier

Who Runs The World? | Mary Gauthier

An Americana Music Association Award-winner, Mary Gauthier’s 2018 release Rifles & Rosary Beads received a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. The emotional and powerful album was co-written with U.S. veterans and their families and served to help them cope with the trauma they all experienced both abroad and at home. The album won “Album of The Year” at the International Folk Music Awards (Folk Alliance) and Gauthier was awarded the Americana Music Association UK “International Artist Of The Year” award in 2019.  Gauthier was featured on NPR Weekend Edition, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Associated Press, Billboard, Oxford American and a very moving segment on CBS This Morning  (View HERE). Watch Gauthier’s interview with Sarah Silverman on I Love You, America HERE.

In her upcoming memoir Saved by a Song, Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her book celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together.

    B-Sides | Dead Vinyl

    B-Sides | Dead Vinyl

Dead Vinyl is a fantastic rock & roll band from Ft. Worth, TX. They will draw you in with their powerhouse sound on hits such as "Till the Cosmos Fall" and then comfort you with the soft melodic sounds of newer songs such as "Let Love Do".

I'd be lying if I told you that Dead Vinyl are not friends of mine. The truth is, I've known these guys a very long time and was ecstatic to finally get to record a podcast episode with them. Dead Vinyl consists of: Hayden Miller on Vocals, Zach Tucker on Bass, Parker Anderson on Drums, and Tyler Vela on Guitar. While we unfortunately did not get to record with Tyler on this episode Hayden, Parker, and Zach take us through the various iterations of their bands before forming Dead Vinyl, there are a lot of stories and even more laughs.

I was so fortunate to get to talk to these three guys a few months ago and I hope you enjoy it even half as much as we did.

While this episode is not part of a larger Volume we are releasing it under the moniker of "B-Sides" since it is a bonus track just for you.

Tune in to find out how the Dead Vinyl crew answers the questions essential to the essence of the podcast:

    1. What does music mean to you?
    2. How do you quantify success?
    3. And what happens after the music fades?

Another B-Side episode and the 2 remaining Volume 5 episodes are right around the corner, but for now enjoy this bonus episode, we hope it empowers you to Let Love Do!
