A Circle in a Square

Kelly Borgen

A Circle in a Square is a podcast about following your dreams and noticing how we're all connected. I live in the heart of a big small town called Orange. Its historic downtown is known as Old Towne and at the juicy center of this one square mile, you'll find a circle, right there within a square. Once upon a time, it was a mere square where people gathered known as the Plaza, but then a traffic circle was built and the debate between whether it's The Circle or it's The Plaza was born. I write about this place because it's been reborn over the last 10 years and there's a lot to say about the sense of community one square mile can bring about. But something about living in a big, small town and being connected with my community inspires me. Getting to know my neighbors, our small business owners and the people that make places so special sparks a curiosity in me to know more, to be more aware and to just talk to other people. This people connection is what drives me and if people and their stories drive you, then settle in with me as I dive into these stories that make places that curate moments that inspire.

BONUS: Ghost Stories with Haunted OC: Part 2

BOO! This is part 2 of an episode we did last year at Halloween (Part 1 is Episode 24). If you haven’t heard of Haunted OC, you’re missing out on the spook! Ernie Alonzo and Charles Spratley have been doing haunted ghost tours of Orange County cities for over 10 years! They conduct their tours year-round, rain or shine (and Kelly has done a tour in both rain AND shine!) They started their tours in Old Towne Orange when Ernie began his research on the antique shops around the Plaza and the eerie stories that would happen in them. Ernie shares that the Antique Depot consistently had the best spooky stories - which sparked the beginning of the tours. Charles started his own ghost tour company in San Diego as a passion project but moved to Orange County for a life change. He started working for Disneyland and one day, when he was talking to a park guest named Joe, he told him his interest in ghost tours. Joe ended up saying, “You need to meet my cousin Ernie!” and the rest is history. Ernie and Charles met up by the fountain in the Old Towne Orange Plaza and that’s how Haunted Orange County was born! On this episode, Kelly, Ernie and Charles discuss their outside passions, the crazy story of how they were connected, and some of their most favorite spooky ghost stories! I’m serious y’all - you won’t want to miss these very fun spooky stories from right here in our own backyard.  Thank you, Ernie and Charles, for being our guests on the podcast! The Old Towne Swing Dancer Matt Richey - What’s Juicy

Before Matt could talk, he would watch his sister in dance class and by the time he was home he would have her entire routine memorized. Before high school, he saw a dance team perform and as soon as he saw them, he knew that was what he wanted to do. So it’s fair to say Matt has been dancing his entire life. Matt moved to Orange 3 years ago with a goal to be around more swing dancers and like-minded people. Due to quarantine, all partner dancing and many dance events have closed down. Throughout this time, Matt couldn’t find the right outlet to dance so he started going on a walk everyday to get out of the house, and his walks always turned into a dance - whether he realized it or not! He just started dancing and a car would honk at him or wave - so he decided to just film his dances and bring a smile to more people, virtually! We found Matt on Instagram, and we definitely recommend you check out his page linked below. On this episode Matt, Lindsey, and Alex talk about how Matt started his Old Towne dancing videos, how he taught a dance at Disneyland’s Dapper Day, how the quarantine actually inspired this silver lining in Matt’s life.  DM Matt on Instagram to request a song Matt should dance to!
