Ep 91: Interview with Casey McMinn Howard: Atlanta newborn and maternity photographer

Today’s guest is Casey McMinn Howard, Atlanta’s premier newborn and maternity photographer.  She goes above and beyond to help create a space where families feel welcome, comfortable, and at ease with documenting their pregnancy journey.  Dr. Shannon and Casey chat about what makes her photography space so unique (she has a beautiful studio in East Cobb and provides hair/makeup and wardrobe), what led her on this specific photography path (she’s a mom to 3 little ones herself), and her goals with her photography sessions (it’s more than just taking pictures).

    Ep 90: Holding Two Truths

    Ep 90: Holding Two Truths

“It helps for us to develop our own inner capacity to hold the things that make us nervous and uncomfortable. It helps for us to prepare our internal ground, so that birth may land upon a nervous system that will not default to fighting, fleeing, or freezing in response to the inevitably strong sensations and monumental transformation.”
In this episode Doula Rachael and Dr. Shannon find inspiration from the Pathways to Family Wellness article “Birth Pause” encouraging us to “meet each wave of transformation with grounded flexibility”.  There’s  empowerment in being able to hold two truths at once even though they may seem to be opposing truths.  And birth can definitely be a situation where seemingly opposing truths hold their respective values.
    Birth can be both:
Hard + rewardingPainful + beautifulExhausting + BlissfulPainful + PurposefulFrustrating + FunAnd there can be a resiliency when we learn to hold these truths with a flowing balance as birth unfolds.

    Ep 89: Ultramarathons and Birth

    Ep 89: Ultramarathons and Birth

Can birth be compared to an ultramarthon - sure!  Just ask me, Dr. Shannon.  In today’s episode, doula Rachael and I sit down to discuss the unique way I celebrated a recent milestone birthday……running 40 miles for 40 years.  Now I am an avid runner, and I’ve used big races to celebrate big life events in the past (like graduating from chiropractic school), but Rachael was able to ask me some questions that will have you seeing the similarities between birth and endurance races like you might not have thought before…….the training and preparation leading up to the race, the pre-race jitters, getting to race day and everything goes awry, pushing through the pain, the mental games we play during races, finally reaching the finish line, and the post-race recovery……
We think you’ll be entertained and surprised at some ultramarathon coping mechanisms I used, and maybe you’ll even learn some techniques for any upcoming endurance events you might have.

Great info & down to earth

I love listening to this podcast! I always learn something new from from both Dr. Shannon & doula Rachael, including better ways to communicate birth work to my own patients. It’s a great podcast to share with pregnant women so they can learn tips on how to manage the pregnancy even better. Dr. Shannon & Rachael sound great, are intelligent, gel with each other so well, and are down to earth individuals.

These ladies are great!

I’m so glad I found this podcast! These ladies are such gems for taking the time to make this podcast and share such a wealth of information with us. Traditional prenatal care is NOT equipping us with the information we need for the births we want to have. I’m so lucky to be local and can’t wait for my appointment with Dr. Shannon! Thanks so much!!

Alignment is Key!

Regardless of the type of birth a woman desires, she should be afforded two key rights-the right to choose where and with whom she will birth, and the right to have a collaborative team intent on helping her realize her plans as much as is safely possible for both mom and baby. Shannon and Rachael’s podcast is instrumental in shining a light on all things birth in a way that will educate birthing families and equip them with the confidence they need to make well-informed decisions for a successfully aligned birth. This podcast brings the beauty and joy possible to ALL birth, whether home, hospital, vaginal or C-section. They are true gifts to the health and wellness of the birth community.
