Dr. David Azerrad | U.S. Declaration of Independence | America's Exceptionalism | Equality and Justice

David Azerrad is an Assistant Professor and Research Fellow at Hillsdale College’s - Van Andel Graduate School of Government in Washington, D.C. His research and writing focuses on classical liberalism, conservative political thought and identity politics. He has taught previously at American University and the University of Dallas. Tucker Carlson calls Dr. David Azerrad one of the 'smartest conservatives'.

We were joined by Dr. David Azerrad on the 4th of July, focusing our discussion on America's founding, the Declaration of Independence, and its relevance and significance for citizens today amid the racial tensions and mayhem on the streets of select cities.

In a commentary via Real Clear Politics on July 4, 2020, Dr. Azerrad writes:

If there is hope, it lies in the majority of Americans of all races who do not believe this racist nonsense, who still cling to the colorblind republican creed of equal rights under equal law. They have been falsely taught to look beyond the founding to defend it, but at least the belief is not dead, however obscured its provenance may be. In truth, the creed finds its clearest and most eloquent articulation in the good old self-evident truths proclaimed by our Founders. “All men are created equal” has always meant “all men.” And it still means all men. Nowhere in the Declaration of Independence, or in the Constitution for that matter, are people classified by race—or ethnicity, religion, sex, or any of the other categories used to pit us against one another today. What the country needs are more Americans—the more prominent, the better—to reassert the Founders’ creed and pledge, in its defense, if not their lives and fortunes, at the very least their sacred honor."

Debra LaPrevotte | Rule of Law — FBI Kleptocracy Program | Global Corruption

Debra LaPrevotte is a Senior Investigator for The Sentry, Former Supervisory Special Agent on the International Corruption Unit at FBI, Washington, DC, and instrumental in launching the FBI's Kleptocracy program. Debra LaPrevotte reviews the initiation of the FBI’s Kleptocracy program and seizing more than $1 billion from corrupt foreign officials, including the recovering $630 million of Nigerian government funds stolen by General Sani Abacha, former President of Nigeria.

American leadership is confronting foreign corrupt officials and transnational organized crime and terror networks. Global corruption is negatively impacting America's economy and security. A kleptocracy—loosely translated from Greek as “rule by thieves”—is a form of political or government corruption involving officials who steal from their government treasuries to enrich their own personal wealth." Debra LaPrevotte clearly articulates the serious threats to America's democracy and national security which is posed by imported corruption and illicit financial flows from authoritarian regimes and mafia states.

The conversation also covers the perilous Balkan Route which brings into the heart of Europe heroin from Afghanistan which finances terrorist networks including al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah and ISIS. The annual $28 billion in heroin from Afghanistan passes through NATO member states Albania, Croatia and Montenegro, countries with high levels of corruption, significant illicit financial outflows and parlous judicial systems:
