Put your Data Strategy into Action and Get Results in 90 Days w/ Vincent Lee

Put your Data Strategy into Action and Get Results in 90 Days w/ Vincent Lee

You don’t want to miss Vincent share the three steps he took after he left Lillian’s class that led to his success in 90 days.  He discussed how he chose the right problem to solve, and the challenges he faced while setting expectations, and most importantly how he measures success! Tune in and be sure to share with others that struggle with their data strategy. Knowledge bombs galore!

[17:03] Vincent’s takeaways from Lillian’s course: “What I learned from the workshop really inspired me and was really insightful. We have a lot of data in our company. We have to ask: ‘What can we do with that data? How can we monetize it better? How we can drive revenue from the data?’”  [23:06] Vincent on understanding the data you have: “Once you understand your data you can move on to implement the right models and generate the right insights.”   [41:43] Vincent on what is most important: “What is most important is actually transforming your data into relevant insights. Don’t jump quickly into the solution. Sit down, narrow down your problem, find the real cost, and seek out different solutions. Only then you can find the most effective solution.” For full show notes, and the links mentioned visit: https://bibrainz.com/podcast/68

Will Power BI's Reign last? w/ Patrick LeBlanc

Will Power BI's Reign last? w/ Patrick LeBlanc

Just a few years can be a lifetime in the data world, but there’s reason to expect that PowerBI, which has already taken the business intelligence world by storm, is set up for at least a ten-year reign? Why is that? What do you need to know about PowerBI?
That’s exactly what today’s guest Patrick Leblanc is going to cover! As the co-host of the famous Guy in a Cube YouTube channel (with over 100,000 followers), and Principal Program Manager at Microsoft, Patrick share’s his unbiased view of whether or not he feels that PowerBI is here to stay. He also shares practical ways to embrace PowerBI in your organization and gives some of his thoughts about the future about PowerBI! Whether you have Power BI or your considering it this episode is a must listen and share! Enjoy!

[32:41] - Patrick on getting started in Power BI: “I say you take a really slow step toward that solution, and the first thing you need to do is really look at your data.” [33:50] - Patrick on Power BI Adoption: “That’s the big tip, you have to be gradual with these people.” [43:58] - Patrick on trying Power BI: “You can honestly just get into PowerBI desktop, which is free, do everything you need globally, kick the tires on it if it doesn’t work, it cost you some time, because of your human resource cost, but for the most part, you’re going to pay them anyway. So it costs you nothing.” For full show notes, and the links mentioned visit: https://bibrainz.com/podcast/65

The Role of Exec & Expectation Mngt in Data Science w/ Heather Smith

Many companies want to use data to gain a competitive edge in their industries--this can pose a challenge for organizations whose core business is not inherently technical. To make things worst lots of providers and consulting firms push unproven strategies and technical solutions that don't work. My guest today, Heather Smith is a data leader who has over 15 years of experience in the data science field, including recognition as one of Seattle's Top 5% of Women Engineers by Women Impact Tech.

As co-founder of Rove Technologies, Heather teaches how to set realistic expectations, when it comes to senior management and why it’s so important. She shares real-world examples of where expectations were set, and unfortunately when they were not. In a more personal tone, she discusses how her female appearance has impacted her professionally. Listen in to hear Heather talk about the role of executive expectation management in data science and how you can start managing expectations correctly!

Do we Need a New Data Viz Language? w/ Raphael Branger

Do we Need a New Data Viz Language? w/ Raphael Branger

In Ep 50 with Jurgen Faiist, I discussed why we need a new data visualization language. In today’s episode, we return to debate that topic with my good Suisse buddy Raphael Branger who is a Principal Data & Analytics Consultant at IT-Logix in Switzerland. Raphael is an IBCS Certified Consultant (he introduced me to it) as well as a Certified Disciplined Agile Practitioner with more than 18 years of experience in business intelligence and data warehousing. I met Raphael almost a decade when he invited to keynote their epic BI event in Zurich. As one of the most passionate people I’ve met around requirements gathering ‘engineering’ is he calls it, his feedback was instrumental to the ongoing enhancement of our BI Dashboard Formula methodology!

In today’s episode, Raphael gives examples of why a new data viz language is needed and explains the International Business Communication Standards (IBCS) SUCCESS poster and how those standards can help. So much knowledge bombs in this one! Be sure to tune in!

[03:01] The pros and cons of whether a new data visualization language is needed [03:15]  - User Expectations: Real-world experiences using the IBCS standards [24:45]  - How to ease communication between consumer and creator For full show notes, and the links mentioned visit: https://bibrainz.com/podcast/63

Great actionable content, better when vendor independent

Overall this is a very helpful podcast that I’ve subscribed to and listen to regularly.

Positives:
1. Very good guests for interviews.
2. The host knows her stuff and provides valuable content.
3. I almost always come away from an episode with at least one good actionable idea.

Negatives:
1. Would prefer it stayed vendor Independant rather than advocating for specific vendors like Power BI. Thought the most recent podcast came off as a bit of an infomercial.
2. I would prefer less fluff content that doesn’t get to the point of the topic. Some is entertaining, but I often find myself skipping over the first 10 minutes to get to the real content.

Fantastic Source of Business Info, Hard to Get Otherwise

Since I've set my sights on being a BI Trusted Advisor/Business Analyst, I've been so wishing to get the kind of info about what's going on in the BI/Data Analytics world that AOF provides. I thought I'd have to get interviews myself with many BI leaders -- hard to do! -- to figure out's on the way in, what's on the way out, what I should focus on studying, what career possibilities are there, what works, what doesn't, what gotcha's should I watch out for, what are good data strategies and adoption strategies, how can I gather requirements more quickly & effectively..... But Mico has already done all that hard work, and since I discovered this podcast, I've been learning EXACTLY the kinds of things I've been so wanting to learn! AND with Mico's characteristic warmth and heart. She not only finds smart leaders with a lot to share, but down-to-earth, authentic people like she is. She's not only informing, but she's gathering an extraordinarily mutually supportive, generous, heartful community by force of her own big, warm personality. The podast is great, the guests are great, the info provided is current and super useful, and I'm super glad to have found it! (And it makes my long walks all the more interesting).
Oh and I've also taken her BIDS Accelerator Workshop and it was awesome too, and super useful. I feel so much more confident going into my next BI Analyst job with Mico's proven tools and methods in my toolkit. It's great to be part of her community.
