    The Hessians: How 1/3 of Britain’s Army Fought—and Saw—America | S1E35 AAR

    Most Americans remember the Hessians as drunken mercenaries defeated at Trenton. But nearly 30,000 German soldiers served Britain—from Canada to West Florida—and at one point constituted roughly one-third of its regular army in North America. They arrived with women and children, judged both Americans and their British commanders, encountered slavery, and sometimes decided to remain. Her research focuses on the American Revolutionary era and Early American Republic, and she is especially interested in the experiences of German-speaking people during this period (1775-1830). Dr. Baer is the author of "The Trial of Frederick Eberle: Language, Patriotism and Citizenship in Philadelphia’s German Community, 1790-1830", which was awarded the St. Paul, Biglerville Prize in American Lutheran History, and "Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War", which was honored with the American Roundtable of Philadelphia Annual Book Award, Inaugural American Battlefield Trust Prize for History Honorable Mention, and Society of the Cincinnati Prize. Dr. Baer is an elected Member of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts. She served as a historical advisor and interviewee for The American Revolution, a documentary film by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein, and David Schmidt.     Forgotten Revolutionaries—Fueled the War and Forced America to Define Who Was American | S1E34 AAR

    Who counted as an American? After independence, the answer was not obvious—especially at sea, where Americans and Britons could look and sound identical. Sailors had already served as the Revolution’s foot soldiers and carried weapons, uniforms, and other war supplies through dangerous Atlantic routes. Their later battles over nationality pushed the new United States toward an extraordinary system for proving citizenship—and the story also overturns a classroom assumption about the Boston Tea Party: the Tea Act actually lowered the duty on tea. That last point is one of the interview’s best surprises.     The Continental Dollar: The Default That Built American Credit | S1E33 AAR

    Did America default deliberately on the paper that financed its Revolution? The history most Americans learned blames the Continental dollar’s collapse on reckless printing and runaway inflation—but these notes functioned more like tax-backed bonds. Soldiers were paid in these promises and bore their plummeting value; then, in 1790, the new federal government settled the remaining dollars at 100 to 1, although it could have afforded a far more generous conversion.     Hessian POWs: Hold Them. Win Them Over. Weaken Britain.| S1E32 AAR

    Hessian POWs became part of America’s war strategy. Rather than quickly exchange thousands of captured German soldiers and return them to Britain’s army, American leaders had a powerful reason to keep them out of the fighting. But they went further: Washington and other revolutionaries tried to win them over—placing prisoners among German-speaking Americans, treating them generously, and even offering land to men willing to abandon British service.
