For anyone familiar and experienced with academia, its institutions, and practices and principles—past or present—as undergraduate through graduate students, as postdoctoral fellow up to professor, these journeys are often described and could be interpreted by the inexperienced as straightforward paths, but with immense hurdles throughout and between each transition. Accompanied by the rigors of creative endeavors and advancement of discoveries and innovation in science and technology—and then paired with the pitfalls of human interpretation and subjectivity—the definitions of "failure" and "success" are often relegated in the worst way: merely as polar opposites. This culminates into an overarching culture and atmosphere where the rarest moments of joy can be too quickly obliterated into marathons of suffering: a theme that is all well too familiar, and one that is nothing but an impediment to the progression of and advancement in higher education and science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). From where does this suffering in these immense and exciting endeavors arise, and must it come part and parcel with every step? Continuing 30 years of experience with stories in and beyond the academic realm, this podcast will take these perspectives and philosophies—and pull them, along with you, the student, the researcher, the innovator, the educator—into the sunlight. Join us for some first-hand experiences, insights from inside and outside academia, and perspectives that are aimed at redefining the conventions of academia and your training. Topics will often hover within and around the science and technology realm but will be applicable to all academics—whether those days are complete or ongoing for you—with the aim of helping to provide you a redirected compass and to help orient you and stabilize you on your journey forward, or to grow and recover from those times past.

  1. Episode 20: Forward

    03/07/2025

    Episode 20: Forward

Whomever you are, wherever you are, and whatever you do, you are different than everyone else. And this means that all the external experiences and stimuli we each face from early in our lives also differ. This fact means that our views of others within and outside of our midst, our interpretations of the advantages and disadvantages we believe they experience, the roles that (we think) they play, and so on, are the attributes that construct our own interpretation of where we fit and where we belong. Additionally, the influences around us that contribute directly to both the positive and negative impressions of ourselves further compound the self-realization of who we are, potentially limiting our own self-worth and degrading what we feel our value might be. These are only some of the many factors that limit our self-actualization—the process of becoming the "best" version of yourself—but are critical in defining how and where we see ourselves "fit" in society and the world. This can often lead to amplified feelings of disparity, with for a multitude of possible reasons one ubiquitous example being individuals that feel they are "common folk". In this final episode of Season 1, we discuss this sentiment, some of the causes and symptoms of this interpretation and classification, and the importance of each individual to reassess their impact and value, from local to global. We discuss the concept—"the power of one"—and reinforce the importance of every individual taking account for their contributions, while also doing the same for others within their proximity and beyond. Emphasis on the importance of deliberating and achieving the good of "common goals" to which everyone must contribute will be key to overcome barriers that have existed for decades, and this will require an openness and willingness for individuals of all kinds to communicate and reason. Breeching numerous barriers—including the philosophical siloing of education and other opportunities for training and growth—will also be necessary. No less than reflecting on these, would reveal that we have much more in common than not, and that defining our goals in this fashion ties us together as a population and world much more closely, than the superficial matters that are currently tearing us apart. #research #teaching #education #college #university #hypothesis #forward #onward #one #individual #power #powerofone #common #folk #commonfolk #special #hierarchy #internal #external #outsider #local #family #community #region #global #goals #purpose #together #professor #graduatestudents #gradstudents #grad #postdoctoral #postdoc #science #scientific #success #courage #academia #academic Song: Hoober - Higher (feat. 2. Episode 19: Intention

    02/27/2025

    Episode 19: Intention

With the ever-growing rift between views on education and science in the United States, it is becoming clearer the discordance that exists between what is often communicated—and then further amplified—and the actual underlying intention behind proposed actions. Individuals with a lack of understanding, and potentially worse—no desire to have any awareness of the true, intended basis for decisions—end up contributing to a greater degradation of progress and their requisite systems, causing even more extensive damage to themselves and the very people that were duly committed to supporting them. Much of this now boils down to how information today—increasingly so over the past two decades—is transmitted and accepted with little hesitation, particularly if it fits with a receiver's bias. This problem is not new, but as technology and modalities of human interaction have become nearly instantaneous, a false sense of knowledge and awareness has accelerated its creep into the minds of many. And while this immense and accelerated access to information has yielded real benefits, the lack of insights into "how" and "when" information should be vetted and carefully judged is causing continued damage to our population and our institutions. The concept of "Do Your Own Research" (DYOR) is one example of a "self-ascribed ability", which could have some positive attributes, but for the most part causes more serious problems for individuals and their communities. In this episode, we discuss some key attributes to how researchers (should) employ the scientific method as they perform experimentation, including consideration of the discovery they are pursuing—employing an "alternate hypothesis"—along with the inverse that they first and foremost are aiming to disprove: the "null hypothesis". Today, the adoption of "DYOR" touted by much of the public falls far short of what is required to truly vet and authenticate information. These shortcomings in understanding what fundamental research entails and the drive to comprehend "intent", are reflective of similar patterns, behaviors, and emotions experienced by academics and non-academics alike in their lives, personal and professional. This is especially true and emotionally costly when the overarching intent of an individual is lost or completely ignored, and the effort they were pursuing is impeded, or worse, their job is terminated. Here, we draw parallels between the lack of a pursuit of understanding of intention—or any desire to care—that can be so challenging and emotionally draining within institutional scenarios, and what is currently occurring on the macro-scale in the United States and beyond. #research #teaching #education #college #university #hypothesis #alternate #null #alternatehypothesis #nullhypothesis #intention #intentions #purpose #bias #emotion #emotional #baggage #hurt #research #doyourownresearch #dyor #understanding #ambivalence #ignorance #skeptic #skepticism #professor #graduatestudents #gradstudents #grad #postdoctoral #postdoc #science #scientific #success #courage #academia #academic Song: Hoober - Higher (feat. 3. Episode 18: Wellness

    02/20/2025

    Episode 18: Wellness

In societies where work and hierarchies demanding extreme levels of "output" predominate, any meaningful sense of human value is diminished. To live, operate, and often to be "successful" in these realms, it means an individual's well-being is not prioritized, by their superiors, and subsequently, themselves. Unfortunately, this and other related detrimental conditions correspond with both institutions and careers that require increasing levels of education and/or experience, where a neutral observer might believe individuals that both lead and participate in such endeavors should know better about how to best foster productivity, and that would be no less than to support and engage better health and well-being. But the fact remains: whether blue- or white-collar—and all other vocations and jobs in between—the idea of "wellness" does not predominate as either an appreciated or even reasonably executed principle in most institutions and workplaces. In this episode, we touch on the topic of wellness, some generalities as to why it is so important, and the fact that every individual deserves a no less than a modicum of wellness and its practices—and an environment that is receptive to enable such benefits—to facilitate the betterment of one's health, an increased sense of worth, and a subsequently enhanced ability to perform and succeed. The unacceptable nature of and driving forces of the "self-sacrifice" of wellness is discussed, and the fact that institutions including academia are challenging ecosystems that lead many to such self-destructive practices, further underscores the importance of changing our views of and approaches to ensuring every person's wellness. #research #teaching #education #college #university #wellness #wellbeing #health #happiness #success #mentalillness #illness #isolation #loneliness #sabotage #nopainnogain #pain #support #peers #institution #institutionalization #faculty #profess #professor #graduatestudents #gradstudents #grad #postdoctoral #postdoc #science #scientific #success #courage #academia #academic Song: Hoober - Higher (feat. 4. Episode 17: Foresight

    02/12/2025

    Episode 17: Foresight

For many of the decisions we make in our lives, there are no potentially serious or long-lasting consequences. But in some situations—personal and professional—certain key decisions can alter our trajectory for better or worse, though an outcome may not manifest right away because it requires no less than a "domino effect" from an action that may end up causing secondary (two degrees) and possibly tertiary (three degrees) effects that are farther-reaching. Sometimes these results are anticipated and can come in expected ways; other times, both the effect and its cause end up both being complete unknowns. It is in preparation for these times, particularly to avoid or minimize the impact of detrimental or destructive outcomes, where some effort spent paying close attention to "signals" around you—direct and indirect, spoken and unspoken, supportive and unsupportive—is invaluable. While being "psychic" might be a superpower that many would choose to avoid adverse outcomes, working to develop foresight from the conditions of situations and scenarios and their respective signals can at least help one to better prepare strategies and tactics to achieve more optimal results. In this episode, we discuss why the importance of practicing foresight applies to everyone—academic and non-academic alike—particularly in our Nation and world today, and we share some reflections into how a simple "real-life" example exemplifies how many of us already integrate signals and naturally use them for the purpose of foresight to help us improve our decision-making. For every work and professional environment—academic or not—the unknown in relationships and personal dynamics can have as much of an impact on one's career and their choices as the subject matter and work itself; here, we present the importance of actively receiving every type of signal being emanated, and the need of foresight to best anticipate and prepare to respond to the unexpected. #research #teaching #education #college #university #foresight #signals #friend #ally #adversary #consequences #psychic #choices #decisions #spoken #unspoken #outcomes #known #unknown #anticipate #prepare #prepared #preparedness #strategy #strategies #lose #tactics #institution #institutionalization #faculty #profess #professor #graduatestudents #gradstudents #grad #postdoctoral #postdoc #science #scientific #success #courage #academia #academic Song: Hoober - Higher (feat. 5. Episode 16: Progress

    02/05/2025

    Episode 16: Progress

When we think of “progress”, it means different things to different people. Often, “progress” is described in broad social, economic, and technological terms, and in ways that are not so easily translated to or by individuals. In some instances, however, when growth and gains that are made in one’s professional or personal life that are highly impactful end up being rebuked or completely reversed by a superior, a friend or loved one, or politics, it can have an impact that feels even more adverse than if no "forward steps" had been achieved at all. The "us versus them" mentality is rife throughout all parts of life, with the "sides" being drawn and "wins" for one being the "loss" for the other (and vice versa). Whether matters of education, identity, regionality, race, religion—the list goes on and on—a major contributing gap to this problem that continues to grow is the lack of willingness to fundamentally understand each other as human beings, originating first and foremost with little desire to grasp ourselves and our own existence, and what it means to be human. In this episode, we present these perspectives, as well as parallels between how people within society treat each other in a fashion similar to how hierarchies and control systems in institutions (especially academia) can make progress and "positive" (e.g. productive) change difficult, if not impossible. We discuss how internal issues with individuals in positions of power—such as their lack of willingness to accept their own weaknesses, identity, and trauma—are much of the root cause of their inability to be open to new solutions or changes that can increase opportunities for growth, for themselves and others around them. And here it must be emphasized, that each small step forward—even if reversed without thoughtful consideration—has an indelible impact on people and paves a path for betterment. People from all walks of like—academic and non-academics alike—have an opportunity and obligation to better know themselves and to pursue a deeper understanding of each other. And the importance of embracing the importance of progress, even with the smallest of steps. #research #teaching #education #college #university #progress #growth #advancement #self-hatred #hierarchy #hierarchies #introspection #respect #inclusion #exclusion #trauma #identity #politics #ideal #idealized #diversity #equity #inclusion #win #wins #lose #loss #losses #sides #weakness #weaknesses #overcome #institution #institutionalization #faculty #profess #professor #graduatestudents #gradstudents #grad #postdoctoral #postdoc #science #scientific #success #courage #academia #academic Song: Hoober - Higher (feat. 6. Episode 15: Sacrifice

    01/29/2025

    Episode 15: Sacrifice

From the moment of our birth, each of us are left with our own unique set of "starting conditions". And as each of the biological and environmental factors to which we are exposed start to impact us from that very moment, we begin a progression of development into our surroundings and society. And from this earliest of stages, we are exposed to factors out of our control that define the advantages, challenges, opportunities, and risks that each of us will face as we grow, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. The importance of exposure to enrichment and education of all kinds for our development cannot be understated, but neither can the differential between every individual and what motivates us toward and/or impedes us from learning (or even wanting to learn), starting from the very beginning all the way through to the end of our lives. Today, there is an ever-growing schism between individuals that harbor a disdain and/or mistrust for education—particularly higher education—its institutions, and the research and advancements it delivers. In this episode, we present some perspectives from both sides and discuss the importance of pursuing a mutual deeper understanding and respect for the choices made by every individual. Pursuit of common ground and understanding requires sacrifice, and a commitment to acknowledging the choices made by and sacrifices of each person, whether they pursued a higher education or not. Lastly, we discuss why it is crucial for academic institutions to participate in this discourse, and make improved efforts to express, communicate, and provide measures of inclusivity to every individual and community, to facilitate opportunities for all to gain insight and growth, and help restore the ever-eroding trust of the disenfranchised. #research #teaching #education #college #university #sacrifice #sacrifices #equity #access #disenfranchised #diversity #inclusion #exclusion #misinformation #disparity #disparities #isolation #rural #urban #knowledge #faculty #profess #professor #graduatestudents #gradstudents #grad #postdoctoral #postdoc #faculty #professor #science #scientific #success #courage #academia #academic Song: Hoober - Higher (feat. Episode 14: Ideas

Ideas in our professional and personal lives are no different than currency, whether economic, social, or professional. They help us build relationships, solve problems, and make a whole array of new advancements and discoveries. But how valuable is an idea without the corresponding process from which it was inspired and derived? And where should lines be drawn when the "risk" of sharing one or more new ideas increases the likelihood of it not providing a satisfactory "return" to its creator – in a worst-case-scenario, where it could simply be taken by someone else? In this episode, we discuss the value proposition of the idea formulation process and its importance being as significant as the idea itself. Equally relevant to non-academics, we present the benefits and challenges of academics sharing ideas, as well as strategies for how to maximize opportunities and minimize associated risks in doing so. We also discuss considerations and perspectives into how to value your own decisions in how you manage your ideas, but also how to address and recover from situations where ideas may have been taken (e.g. published) unintentionally, or otherwise. #research #teaching #education #college #university #idea #ideas #competition #collaboration #currency #strategy #strategies #sharing #team #teamwork #products #intellectualproperty #IP #intellectual #knowledge #disruptive #faculty #profess #professor #graduatestudents #gradstudents #grad #postdoctoral #postdoc #faculty #professor #science #scientific #success #courage #academia #academic Song: Hoober - Higher (feat. 8. Episode 13: Serendipity

    01/15/2025

    Episode 13: Serendipity

While the concept of science outcomes for many academics and non-academics alike might align more with discoveries that arise from and align with rational thought and a logical progression built from prior-derived data, evidence, and observations, there are innumerable examples from both fundamental and applied sciences—in academia and industry—that were serendipitous in nature. But is serendipity in science and engineering (and other subject matter areas) merely an outcome of "good fortune", or is there actual principle and practice in increasing the occurrence of serendipitous events in research and development? Can a shift in training and scientific thinking about subject matter—what is "known" and the respective "rules" that exist for the process(es) or principle(s) of interest—drive and even accelerate new insights and provide increasing degrees of freedom that can help motivate—and even protect—researchers in their quests? In this episode, we discuss the concept of serendipity—not merely as a positive outcome of "chance"—but as a direct result of increasing openness to new outcomes in research and development. While the idea of serendipity is often portrayed as a kind of "passive benefit" that leads to some kind of "positive outcome", we present the importance of testing the limits/boundaries of knowledge as they stand in conjunction with a continuing broadened openness to results that are unexpected, as much as those that are anticipated. A philosophical approach such as this can help researchers contend with the pressures associated with heightened expectations for specific results and outcomes, and recenter their motivations onto determining the truth behind how their system of interest truly operates. And in essence, working to maximize the likelihood of serendipity can help increase the freedom for the researcher in their pursuit of this truth. #research #teaching #education #college #university #serendipity #serendipitous #superstition #luck #fortune #pressure #discovery #freedom #results #industry #products #subjectmatter #knowledge #disruption #disruptive #faculty #profess #professor #graduatestudents #gradstudents #grad #postdoctoral #postdoc #faculty #professor #science #scientific #success #courage #academia #academic Song: Hoober - Higher (feat.
