Are We Witches?

Sarah Drummond & Lisa Marmur

Welcome to Are We Witches? A podcast for the witch-curious and the skeptical, hosted by two witches-in-training, Lisa Marmur and Sarah Drummond. We’re two friends diving headfirst into the enchanting world of modern witchcraft for the very first time. Together, we’ll explore magical realms, learn how to charge crystals, brew a little mischief, and maybe even tell the future. We have no idea what we’re doing (yet), but we’re here to document the journey—warts and all.  Our quest will take us through the history of witchcraft, unpacking its feminist, divine, beautiful, and problematic aspects. By understanding how magic shaped the world, we hope to uncover where magic still thrives today. If magic is real, we’re here to find it. So, are we witches? Are you? Join us every second Tuesday by the cauldron as we brew up some tea and see where the magic takes us. We couldn’t do it without you. Because, after all, it takes a village to raise a witch. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

    Were We Witches?

Join Lisa and Sarah as they explore the science behind epigenetics, the “witch wound” and inherited trauma as they untangle the complexity of their current lives and the karmic potential of many more. Investigating this first hand, Lisa visits a past life psychic medium with good friend Monique. Having such a strong connection they want to know, is this the first life in which they met? Or have they met before?  Meanwhile Sarah looks for more signs from the universe (is she on the right path?) and our hosts offer a little DIY magic at home (we could all use a little help moving forward, right?). So join them for this deep dive special into past lives as they attempt to answer the question, is this their first time around? Are We Witches...With Familiars?

Familiars take many shapes and sizes; cute, cunning and spectral. Posited as a spiritual companion, Sarah and Lisa wonder what it means to be accompanied by a familiar today. From the witch's black cat archetype to the spirit of a dead man sent from the Fairy Kingdom, the history of familiars is traced back to Early Modern England, where we find the first woman executed for witchcraft assisted by a cat named Sathan (pronounced 'Satan') and the "Witchfinder General" making wild accusations against diabolical animal spirits called Vinegar Tom, Pyewacket, and Grizzel. There is also a tarot spread chosen by a cat (what could he be trying to tell us?), suggestions for supporting your local wildlife, and the calming power of rose quartz helps to soothe a familiar in an anxious moment. This episode is co-hosted by Mina, Otto and Sven, beautiful, faithful familiars to the Are We Witches? podcast. Are We Witches...In True Crime?

This episode, Lisa and Sarah explore how witchcraft keeps slipping into the language of crime; from Hungary’s Angel Makers and the “Yorkshire Witch” Mary Bateman, to séance-era scandals, detective psychics, and the Satanic Panic. Why does the supernatural so often get blamed when the truth is too uncomfortable? Plus, in How's Tricks?, Sarah shares the story of an accidental exorcism, and Lisa gets a little numerological pat on the back from the universe. Are We Witches...At Halloween?

It’s our first video episode! Watch it on YouTube! Lisa and Sarah celebrate Halloween by surprising each other with costumes and tracing the festival’s roots in Samhain, the Celtic fire-festival that marked summer’s end and the thinning of the veil. From guising and soul cakes to Margaret Hamilton’s poisonous green makeup, we explore how Samhain became Halloween, and Sarah fills us in on some of the scariest witch stories from around the world. Plus, in Show and Spell, we try a little apple-peel and candy divination to see if our true love’s initials appear. Citations for Who, What, Witch, Where?
