  1. How Batavia MainStreet is Crafting "Good Energy"

How Batavia MainStreet is Crafting "Good Energy"

Next episode will be our third annual boardwalk shop episode, a conversation with every owner of each Batavia Boardwalk Shop. In the lead up to that episode, I'm talking to the people responsible for making it all happen, Beth and Kristen from Batavia MainStreet. Not only does Main Street organize and prep the boardwalk shop owners. They help evaluate and curate the shops themselves. That evaluating and curating is a great example of one of the things that intrigued me about MainStreet as an organization. Because Batavia MainStreet is responsible for so many things that make up the character of our town, they actually have a lot of power and influence over how things go down. When you check out the shops this year, you'll have Main Street to thank for the uniqueness and diversity on display. These kinds of public-facing, community defining decisions come with a lot of weight, sometimes even baggage. So how do Beth and Kristen lead in these initiatives without feeling overwhelmed, not just by the work but by public scrutiny? 2. Water Street Studios: The Creative Backbone of Batavia

Water Street Studios: The Creative Backbone of Batavia

On this episode of Area Code: Batavia, I'm talking to Bonnie Baumgartner and Jessica Jecmen from Water Street Studios, Batavia's community art center. Batavia has a reputation as being the "artsy" sibling of Geneva and St. Charles, a direct result of people taking active interest in giving artistic work and artistic communities a home. The reality is, without Water Street Studios, and the people who gave their money and time to make it possible, Batavia would be a lot less creative, and honestly? A lot more boring. But what happens when that art is weird or jarring? And how do you get everyone to not only see the value of public art, but agree on what should be painted on the outside walls of our shared community spaces? Now, he's looking to do his same for Batavia's children. On this episode of Area Code: Batavia, a conversation with Tom Kim about his early aspirations, the unique community focus of Batavia, and why he almost left education for good. 4. The Anxious Voter's Guide to Democracy In Batavia

The Anxious Voter's Guide to Democracy In Batavia

On this episode, I'm talking to Patti Lackman and Tammy Caltagirone, Co-Presidents of the League of Women Voters of Central Kane County. I'll be honest. I'm feeling antsy. I'm seeing what's happening nationally, in the chicagoland area, and online, and I've started to get a bit worried about the general state of democracy, and how that might be impacting our local community. That's why I wanted to Patty and Tammy: Not only do we explore what drew them to their roles and how they've experienced local government in Batavia, but we also process all of my intense worries about democracy, and think through what a healthy local democracy looks like in practice. On this episode, a live episode from Sturdy Shelter's Cozy-Fest featuring former writer, poet, and former Hearth & Hammer owner, Annie Scholl, and co-owners of Bocaditos, Juliana Cancelo and Silvia Sanchez. In the first part, I talked to Annie about what it's like to cultivate a cozy aesthetic after the closing of Hearth & Hammer, and what she's been up to afterward. Then, I spoke to Juliana and Silvia about the unique challenge of creative a place of safety and comfort while also managing complicated family history and dynamics. Finally, we bring everyone together to discuss how best to experience emotional safety, comfort, and coziness in the context of our local community. 6. For VSW's Hugo Saltijeral, Work Is a Gift

For VSW's Hugo Saltijeral, Work Is a Gift

Today on the show, I’m at the Valley Shelter Workshop—or VSW—talking to their Executive Director, Hugo Saltijeral. The reality is, for the employees Hugo works with at VSW, many of whom are adults with cognitive disabilities, work is less of a burden and more of a gift. For them, work isn't just a means to an end. It's belonging. Hugo's the type of person that sees open doors everywhere, and seems to get his energy from the opportunities they represent. His approach is really a personification of Batavia, a town the calls itself the city of energy. It's a personification I sometimes struggle to relate to. Is work really a gift? How energizing can it really be? And what does it mean to give others the opportunity to do something that so many of us try to avoid?
