    Dormition Fast 2026 - Day 1

    Day 1 – “Behold the Maidservant of the Lord” “Then Mary said, ‘Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her” — Saint Luke 1:38 The Dormition Fast begins with the holy obedience of the Most Pure Virgin Mary. At the Annunciation, the Archangel Gabriel proclaimed a mystery hidden from all ages, and the salvation of the world awaited the humble response of a young maiden. With profound faith and perfect trust, she answered, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord.” In these few words, the Church beholds the beauty of true holiness. The Mother of God sought neither honor nor recognition. She offered no resistance, asked for no guarantees, and made no demands. She simply surrendered herself entirely to the will of God. Her greatness lay not in earthly glory, but in her humility and loving obedience. The same invitation is placed before us during this holy fast. We often desire to know God’s entire plan before we obey Him. Yet the Most Holy Theotokos teaches us that peace is found not in understanding everything, but in entrusting everything to God. Perhaps the Lord is calling us to forgive, to repent, to persevere in prayer, or to bear some cross with patience. Like the Virgin Mary, we may not see where His path leads, but we know the One who leads us. As we begin the Dormition Fast, let us seek to imitate her humility and purity of heart. For every soul that says “yes” to God becomes a dwelling place of His grace. Prayer Most Holy Theotokos, chosen vessel of the Incarnation and humble handmaid of the Lord, pray for us that we may learn to say with faith and love, “Let it be to me according to Your word.” Christ our God deliver us from pride, self-will, and unbelief. May we obtain a pure heart, steadfast faith, and a spirit of joyful obedience, that You may dwell within us and that we may glorify You together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and always unto the ages of ages. Amen.

    Dormition Fast 2026 - Day 2

    Day 2 – Hastening to Serve “Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah, and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth” — Saint Luke 1:39–40 The Most Holy Theotokos had just received the astonishing message that she would become the Mother of the Savior. Yet she did not withdraw into herself or seek the praise of others. Instead, with humility and love, she hastened to serve her aged kinswoman Elizabeth. The Mother of God teaches us that genuine spiritual life always bears the fruit of selfless love. The grace she received did not make her proud, but more compassionate. The greater the gift, the deeper her humility. The closer she came to God, the more she gave herself to others. How often we become absorbed in our own concerns, struggles, and ambitions. Yet the Dormition Fast calls us to imitate the loving haste of the Virgin Mary. There are many “Elizabeths” around us—those who are lonely, burdened, elderly, discouraged, or in need of a kind word. True fasting is not merely abstinence from food, but the offering of ourselves in love. The Mother of God carried Christ within her, and wherever she went, she brought joy, peace, and blessing. Likewise, every Christian who bears Christ in the heart becomes a source of consolation to others. As we continue our fasting days, let us ask ourselves: Do I carry Christ only for myself, or do I bring Him to others through deeds of mercy and love? Prayer O Most Holy Theotokos, who in humility and love hastened to serve the righteous Elizabeth, teach us to forget ourselves and to seek the good of others. Intercede to your Son, so that He may deliver us from selfishness, indifference, and spiritual laziness. Through your maternal intercessions, grant that we may bear Christ within our hearts and bring His peace and compassion to all whom we encounter. That, following your example, we may glorify your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, together with His eternal Father and His all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and always forever and ever, Amen.

    Dormition Fast 2026 - Day 3

    Day 3 – “My Soul Magnifies the Lord” “And Mary said: ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant’” — Saint Luke 1:46–48 The first words recorded from the lips of the Most Holy Theotokos after greeting Elizabeth are words of praise. She does not exalt herself, though she has become more honorable than the cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim. Instead, she magnifies the Lord. In this sacred hymn, the Church hears the voice of perfect humility. The Virgin Mary recognized that every good thing in her life was the gift of God. She sought no glory for herself, but directed all praise to Him who had done “great things” for her. How different this spirit is from the spirit of the world, which seeks recognition, admiration, and self-promotion. The Mother of God teaches us that true greatness lies not in drawing attention to ourselves, but in pointing others to Christ. During this fast, we are invited to examine our hearts. Are we more inclined to complain than to give thanks? Do we seek our own honor more than the glory of God? Gratitude purifies the soul and opens it to the presence of divine grace. The Most Pure Virgin teaches us that a heart filled with thanksgiving becomes a dwelling place for joy. Even amid trials and uncertainties, the soul that magnifies the Lord discovers a peace that the world cannot give. May our homes, our prayers, and our daily lives echo the song of the Theotokos: “My soul magnifies the Lord.” Prayer O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, by the prayers of Your Most Holy Mother, the Ever-Virgin Theotokos, whose soul magnified the Lord and whose spirit rejoiced in God her Savior, grant us humble and thankful hearts. Deliver us from pride, complaining, and the desire for earthly praise. Fill us with gratitude, that in all things we may glorify Your holy Name and faithfully follow Your holy will. For to You belong all glory, honor, and worship, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

    Dormition Fast 2026 - Day 4

    Day 4 – Treasuring the Mysteries of God “But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” — Saint Luke 2:19 The shepherds had departed, the angels’ song had faded, and the wonder of Bethlehem had filled the hearts of many. Yet amid these extraordinary events, the Gospel tells us something remarkable about the Mother of God: she “kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” The Most Holy Theotokos teaches us that holiness is cultivated not in noise and haste, but in silence and attentiveness to God. She did not seek explanations for every mystery, nor did she speak endlessly about the divine wonders entrusted to her. Instead, she guarded them within the sanctuary of her heart. How often our souls become distracted by endless activity, anxious thoughts, and the constant noise of the world. We desire spiritual growth, yet neglect the stillness in which God speaks. The Dormition Fast invites us to rediscover the sacredness of quiet prayer. Not every trial can be explained, nor every question immediately answered. Some mysteries are meant to be carried with faith, entrusted to God, and pondered in the heart. The Mother of God teaches us that peace is found not in understanding everything, but in remaining close to Christ in all things. As we continue this fast, let us seek moments of silence before God. For a heart that treasures His presence becomes fertile ground for His grace. Prayer O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, grant that we also may treasure Your holy words and faithfully keep Your commandments. Fill us with the spirit of prayer, watchfulness, stillness, and unwavering trust in You, that, walking in humility and repentance, we may abide in Your peace. Make our hearts be a worthy dwelling place for Your Holy Spirit, and that our whole lives may become an offering of praise to Your holy Name. For You are our God, and to You we offer glory, honor, thanksgiving, and worship, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

    Dormition Fast 2026 - Day 5

    Day 5 – A Sword Shall Pierce Your Own Soul Also “Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed” — Saint Luke 2:35 When the Most Holy Theotokos brought the infant Christ to the Temple, she received not only words of blessing, but also a prophecy of suffering. The righteous Simeon foretold that a sword would pierce her soul. From the beginning, the Mother of God understood that love and sacrifice cannot be separated. Yet she did not draw back. She did not complain against God or seek an easier path. In quiet faith, she accepted whatever the Lord permitted, entrusting herself entirely to His wisdom and love. The Virgin Mary teaches us that suffering, when united to Christ, becomes a path to holiness. We naturally seek comfort and avoid pain, but the Mother of God reveals another way—the way of patient endurance, trusting that God works even through sorrow for our salvation. Each of us carries hidden crosses: disappointments, losses, anxieties, illnesses, and unanswered prayers. We may not understand why certain trials are allowed, but we are never asked to carry them alone. The same Lord who strengthened His Mother beneath the Cross is present with us in every affliction. During this Fast, let us learn from the Most Pure Virgin not to flee from the crosses permitted by God, but to bear them with faith, humility, and hope. For beyond every Good Friday stands the joy of the Resurrection. Prayer O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, who strengthened Your Most Holy Mother to stand steadfast beneath Your life-giving Cross, strengthen us also in every trial. By her holy prayers, grant us patience in suffering, peace in uncertainty, and unwavering trust in Your loving providence, that we may faithfully take up our cross and follow You all the days of our lives. For You are our God, and to You we offer glory, together with Your eternal Father, and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

    Dormition Fast 2026 - Day 6

    Day 6 – Transfiguration of Our Lord “And He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light” — Saint Matthew 17:2 The Feast of the Holy Transfiguration is a radiant revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ and the destiny to which He calls all who follow Him. On Mount Tabor, the disciples beheld not a new glory, but the eternal divine glory of the Son of God shining through His humanity. Before they witnessed the sorrow of the Cross, Christ strengthened them with a vision of His glory, revealing that suffering is never the end for those who abide in Him. This holy feast also reveals the purpose of the Christian life. Through repentance, prayer, fasting, participation in the Holy Mysteries, and lives of love and holiness, we are transformed by the grace of the Holy Spirit into the likeness of Christ. As St. Paul teaches, we are being changed “from glory to glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18). The uncreated light that shone from Christ on Tabor continues to illumine, sanctify, and renew every heart united to Him. The mountain of Tabor invites us to leave behind the distractions of the world, ascend through prayer, behold Christ with purified hearts, and then descend to serve others as bearers of His light. May this glorious feast renew our hope, deepen our love for the Savior, and strengthen us to become living icons of His holiness in our homes, our parishes, and our communities. Prayer O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, who revealed the splendor of Your divinity upon Mount Tabor before Your holy disciples, illumine our hearts with the light of Your presence. Transfigure our minds, purify our hearts, strengthen our faith, and make us worthy to reflect Your love and holiness in all that we do. Grant that, walking faithfully in Your commandments, we may behold the radiance of Your eternal Kingdom. For You are our God, and to You we offer glory, honor, thanksgiving, and worship, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.     Dormition Fast Day 7 - Seeking Christ Above All “And when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him” — Saint Luke 2:45 For three days the Most Holy Theotokos and the righteous Joseph searched anxiously for the young Jesus. The One whom she had borne in her womb, nurtured with tender care, and loved above all things seemed absent from her sight. Yet the Virgin Mary did not surrender to despair. She sought Him diligently until she found Him in the Temple, about His Father’s business. Even after hearing His mysterious words, the Gospel tells us that she did not fully understand all that had been spoken. Nevertheless, she continued to trust and, once again, “kept all these things in her heart.” There are times when we too experience a kind of spiritual dryness. Prayer seems difficult, joy fades, and God’s presence appears distant. In such moments, the Mother of God teaches us not to give up, but to seek Christ with greater fervor. His apparent absence is often an invitation to deeper faith and more earnest prayer. The tragedy is not that we sometimes lose the sense of God’s presence, but that we cease searching for Him. The Virgin Mary shows us that no effort spent seeking Christ is ever wasted. During this Fast, let us examine our priorities. Have earthly cares crowded out our love for God? Have we become satisfied with outward religion while neglecting the living presence of Christ? Like the Mother of God, let us return to the Temple—to prayer, to the Scriptures, to repentance—and there we shall find Him anew. Prayer O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, by the prayers of Your Most Holy Mother, the Ever-Virgin Theotokos, grant that we may seek You above all earthly things. When our hearts grow cold and our souls wander from You, draw us back into Your holy presence. Strengthen us with perseverance in prayer, unwavering faith, and an unceasing desire to abide in You. For to You belongs all glory, honor, and worship, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

    Dormition Fast 2026 - Day 8

    Day 8 – The Holiness of Hiddenness “And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them… And His mother kept all these things in her heart” — Saint Luke 2:51 After the wonders of Bethlehem and the mystery of the Temple, the Gospel speaks very little about the years that followed. The Most Holy Theotokos returned to Nazareth and embraced a life hidden from the eyes of the world. No crowds surrounded her. No honors were given to her. Day after day, she fulfilled her calling with humility, prayer, and love. In God’s sight, these hidden years were not wasted years. The Mother of God teaches us that sanctity is often formed not in extraordinary deeds, but in ordinary faithfulness. Holiness grows in the quiet offering of daily duties, in patient endurance, in unseen sacrifices, and in a heart continually turned toward God. How often we desire dramatic experiences or visible achievements, imagining that greatness lies in being noticed. Yet the Virgin Mary reminds us that heaven measures differently. A prayer offered in secret, a burden borne with patience, an act of kindness known only to God—these are precious in His sight. During this Fast, let us not despise the ordinary moments of life. The kitchen, the workplace, the parish, the family table, and the hidden struggles of the heart can all become places of sanctification when lived in communion with Christ. The Mother of God became the most exalted of all creatures because she was content to be the humble handmaid of the Lord. In her hidden life, we discover the beauty of quiet faithfulness. Prayer O Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior, teach us to serve You faithfully in the ordinary moments of our lives, as Your Most Holy Mother, the humble Theotokos, served You in prayer and obedience. Deliver us from vanity, impatience, and the desire for human recognition. Grant us grace to offer every task, sorrow, and joy to You, that our whole life may become an offering pleasing to You and that we may grow daily in holiness. For to You, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, belong all glory, honor, and worship, now and always, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
