Athletes After Hours

Tom Portsmouth

Athletes After Hours came to life when I moved to France last year. In Ted Lasso, there was a perfect scene in which he described his fascination with Walt Whitman’s famous quote: “Be Curious; not judgmental.” I think we all could do with a bit of that. On the Athletes After Hours Podcast, I want to discover the lesser-known sides of professional athletes, exploring what fascinates them when they step away from the spotlight of competition. Each episode will feature intriguing conversations with elite competitors about their intellectual pursuits, creative hobbies, and the unexpected interests that fuel their curiosity between training sessions. From family to friends, coffee to chefs, artists to videographers, and entertainers to storytellers. Discover the myriad ways these world-class athletes find balance and inspiration to complement their performance. Athletes After Hours will also feature read-outs of the latest publications from my newsletter—He Who Learns. Join me, Tom Portsmouth, on Athletes After Hours as we uncover the fascinating intersection between athletic excellence and personal passions. tomportsmouth.substack.com

In Ted Lasso, there was a perfect scene in which he described his fascination with Walt Whitman’s famous quote: “Be Curious; not judgmental.” I think we all could do with a bit of that. As I prepare to move to France, I am curious to see if I can create a podcast with curiosity at its core. That's when Athletes After Hours came alive. Athletes After Hours aims to discover the lesser-known sides of professional athletes, exploring what fascinates them when they step away from the spotlight of competition. Each episode will feature intriguing conversations with elite competitors about their intellectual pursuits, creative hobbies, and the unexpected interests that fuel their curiosity between training sessions. Discover the myriad ways these world-class athletes find balance and inspiration to complement their performance. Join us as we uncover the fascinating intersection between athletic excellence and personal passions. Today, you'll hear from @mattiedodd of Tirol KTM. We spoke a while back about how he had found the extra free time he had from an unfortunate illness, which put him out of action for several months. When he wasn't getting back on the bike, he kept his brain fresh through painting, writing, combined with his deep appreciation for history. Enjoy. This is a public episode. The Future of Triathlon w/ Dan Dixon | Ep.6

Welcome to The Chopper House Podcast. Coming up in this episode of the 'Ever Wonder' Series at The Chopper House:  The podcast to start off the year is with Dan Dixon. A British Triathlete from the North East capital of Newcastle. A young triathlete at the age of 20 years old. He is finding his feet on his journey to the top of Triathlon. Experiencing the ups and downs of sport and take the lessons on board as quickly as he can, from the highs of Commonwealth Games in Birmingham to the lows of falling back in a season long target. I resonated with a lot of what he said in this podcast episode, showing wisdom and experience beyond his years. Dan has been taking an alternative route to other triathletes, skipping the 'university route' as he describes. I hope you enjoy this conversation. Dan Dixon. Keep an eye on that name. He has a big future ahead.
