111 episodes

A podcast about moving from midlife to old age. It takes courage and boldness. The clock is ticking and you can feel it. What's old age *really* like in a society that devalues old people? Debbie was 67 when she started the podcast. Old age seemed very far away. Now, as she turns 72, it doesn't.

Each episode is a frank 30-minute conversation with a best-selling author, expert, or exceptional individual on a topic related to making the most of growing old. With her guests she delves into: the unretired (non-retired) life, slowing down, ageism, senior sex, intergenerational collaboration, grandparenting, grief and widowhood, and more. As well as other stuff that piques her interest: for example, the craft of writing.

She invites her husband, Sam Harrington, on as a frequent guest. He’s a retired physician with a dry sense of humor and he makes her laugh. Debbie and Sam took a grownup gap year at age 61, leaving behind a comfortable life in Washington D.C. They’ve been exploring an "unretired" life ever since on an island off the coast of Maine.

Essential Listening for Those Navigating the [B]older Waters

What a thoughtful, informative and fascinating podcast. Debbie is a great interviewer and the range of guests is impressive. I love her warmth, her questions and her ability to listen. Always look forward to what’s up next.

A well-balanced exploration

I really enjoy Debbie’s style and selection of topics / guests. Her journalism background serves her well. She is a calm, fair, astute questioner and commentator— neither too cheerful and rah rah nor maudlin and “woe is me. I’m getting old.” This podcast makes me think, buy books, and take action.

Great episode on transitions

Who doesn’t find themselves in transition through times of their life? I really enjoyed the conversation on this topic and how to navigate it with more grace and intentionality.
