Back from Ansel Adams Wilderness, Derek and Carl review a number of items not commonly referenced by most critics (including some that really have no business being on the trail). Carl challenges Derek about his contributions to the trip and insinuates that he might be the culprit of the "rock-in-the-pack" prank. In response to an odd trivia question, does Derek believe Mary and Joseph made their journey to Bethlehem 1000 years after Jesus was born?

Episode 105 - The Junk Drawer of Backpacking

Episode 105 - The Junk Drawer of Backpacking

What is the junk drawer of backpacking? And why do we put so many different items there? Derek and Carl each suggest tips for organizing a particular area of your pack better -- what you should be putting there and what you should not. Derek, of course, suggests something that he doesn't do himself and violates backcountry rules. Also, Carl got ahold of an interesting item that Derek had previously brought up in trivia -- the Selk bag!

Highly Entertaining

Stumbled onto this podcast in January 2020 after listening to my first episode, I was hooked. Anyone who gets out in the wilderness backpacking can relate to Carl and Derek’s experiences, we’ve all been there a time or two (except for forgetting a sleeping pad, who does that). Every episode has laughter mixed in with some useful knowledge. Looking forward to listening to season 1 & 2 while patiently waiting for season 4. Happy trails this summer fellas.

The Time Derek and Carl Saved my Life.

Before I found this podcast, I was lost. Literally, lost in the forest. There was no way I could see myself returning to civilisation because of the predicament I found myself in. Malnourished and dehydrated, all hope seemed to be failing. Then, out of nowhere appeared a very hairy creature that stood much taller than myself. He lifted me up, carried me in his arms, fed me with nutritious wilderness berries, and mixed up some drink mix that he had in a bag.
As I fell asleep in the arms of my beloved caretaker, I felt warm and safe. The next morning I woke up beside the trailhead where I had begun my journey, laying on a sleeping pad that did not belong to me, with my hero nowhere to be found.

(Fast forward 6 months)
As I was looking up backpacking podcasts, I came across Derek and Carl with the B&B podcast. As anyone would do, I started with the latest podcast, working my way back to S1 E1, not understanding many things that were being said because of the lack of knowledge that eventually came to me by further listing to previous shows.

After a few days into listening intently I learned who my real hero’s were. Derek and Carl.
All of the wild berries that were eaten were left for me by these men. The drink mix was Carl’s that Derek refused to pick up and purposefully left behind, knowing there would be some good to come out of it. And the sleeping pad, well, despite popular belief, Bill didn’t steal it, nor did Derek leave it at home.
It was only by pure spirit of the trail, and Derek and Carl’s backpacking skills (or lack of them) that I was able to escape this predicament and share my story.

For that, these two wonderful men will always deserve the Flushy Award in my eyes.

Be safe, have fun, thanks for the podcast, and happy trekking.
And remember, it’s not backpacking unless you get lost while wearing cotton socks.

Funny and Informative!

This is my favorite backpacking podcast, hands down. It’s very clean humor, and even has a bible verse for each episode. These guys are honest, humble, and very entertaining. Check it out!
