Josh & Amir

Backscatter is the term used to describe a specific way in which radiation or waves reflect back to their source through an angle of 180 degrees. The art of conversation is very much a back and forth--two people bouncing thoughts and ideas off of each other. Sometimes our thoughts and ideas do a full 180 through discussion with others, when we reflect inwardly the same can happen. Whether we’re sending waves out to others or sending waves into ourselves, we always get something back; the backscatter is unavoidable.

    Episode 8 - Conceptions of God, Religion, & The Problem of Evil

    We’re back with another episode of Backscatter! On this week's episode, Josh and Amir discussed their beliefs in God and why they believe in those particular conceptions of God. They also explored different beliefs in God and why someone may adopt that particular conception. The two of them also discussed religion in a broad sense, the positives, as well as many of the issues they find with organized religion. For example, people who are particularly religious claim to “know” what God is when that is not something anyone could literally know. There is a reason why religion is called beliefs and not knowledge. They also discussed the problem of evil: If God is all good, all knowing, and all powerful, how does evil exist. They discussed some of the solutions they’ve heard of as well as exploring some of their own solutions. Ultimately though, there does not seem to be an adequate solution, this idea is explored further in the episode.     Episode 7 - Narratives, Culture, & Covid-19

    Welcome back to this week’s episode of Backscatter! On this episode, Josh and Amir had a discussion largely revolving around how the nature of reality is often grey, yet most people like to see things as black or white. The subject of COVID-19 and the vaccines were the catalyst for this particular conversation, however, the idea of things being grey and not black or white can be applied to anything as they explore later on in the episode. Most people find a narrative they believe in and do not explore any other ideologies aside from their own. Social media has made this one of the easiest things to do as we often willingly trap ourselves in an echo-chamber of ideas we agree with.     Welcome back to another episode of Backscatter! This week Josh and Amir had a more light hearted conversation, discussing pop culture and what they’re into within pop culture. From The Witcher, anime, The Dark Knight, and more. Afterwards they got into a brief conversation about self defense. The last part of the podcast, they discussed their routines, what they look like now, and where they want them to be.     Episode 5 - Morality, Ethics, Freewill, Etc.

    We’re back with another episode of Backscatter! This week Josh and Amir started their discussion by pondering upon free will and different ideas regarding the concept of freewill. They discussed these different ideas as well as what they thought before moving towards a conversation regarding ethics and morality. The ideas of ethics and morality are something most people take for granted, we accept that morals exist because we are told they exist, we accept what is right and what is wrong because we are told what is right and wrong. They debated whether or not morality is subjective or objective, what gives morality authority, and does morality even exist?     Episode 4 - Politics, Ideology, Culture, Etc.

    On this week's episode of Backscatter, Josh and Amir discussed politics, specifically the political climate/culture as well as different political ideologies and their implications. Is censorship a good or bad thing? Given the nature of political power shifting, is censorship of any kind dangerous? What are the implications of particular political ideologies? Etc. Towards the end of the episode, the two shifted the conversation to a more personal one, before wrapping everything up.     Episode 3 - Culture, Society, & Truth

    Welcome back to BACKSCATTER! We’re glad to be back after a bit of a hiatus. This episode started off with Josh and Amir catching up, Josh talked a bit about music production as well as what he and his band, Apparition Coast, have been up to. They then shifted the discussion towards Covid-19, specifically the debate around masks, what different doctor’s have said, things they have heard and understand to an extent, and their stances on the issue. This conversation led Josh and Amir into a discussion about culture, society, and truth. They began to ask how do we know what it is? Does perception define reality? And so on. The notion of truth and understanding what is true and what is false seems like an obvious answer but it is far from it.     Episode 2 – COVID-19, Social Media, Resentment, etc.

    Welcome back to episode 2 of BACKSCATTER! This is a shorter episode because of technical difficulties about an hour in, but, it was still a good conversation all in all. On this episode Josh and Amir discussed the recent COVID-19 measures issued by Gavin Newsom. They then talked about social media and modern forms of “discussion”, as well as the problems that arise from this manner of debate and conversation. This lead Josh and Amir into a discussion about resentment and hate, and the problems this creates, but also, they started to offer a solution before the audio started to cut out.     Episode 1 - COVID-19, Freewill, God, Empathy, etc.

    Welcome to the first episode of BACKSCATTER! On this episode Josh and Amir discuss what their lives have been like since quarantine, some updates with the podcast, etc. They then get into a discussion about freewill, breaking down different arguments about how we do have it, how we don't, and the implications of each. From there the two talk about God and their beliefs in what God is. For the last bit of the episode, Josh and Amir talked about the importance of empathy and the way to truly create a better society is to show empathy to everyone, even the people who seemingly deserve it the least.
