I loved this show at first, focusing on bands that typically get far less attention and deserve their flowers. The Afghan Whigs episode is epic and I still revisit it. Same for several other early ones, like Jawbreaker. So yes, Gen X music nerd alert.
And as an avowed music nerd, I appreciate that Yasi is a great researcher, but she’s become just another Ringer host now, saddled with their staff as guests most of the time and making space for their endless fascination with rankings and analogies to sports. Her topics have also become more pedestrian, likely their idea, too.
It is surely great for her career and bank account, but their talent pool is mostly pretty annoying and it drags the show down. Chris Ryan is an exception to that rule. Same for Rob Harvilla. Amanda Dobbins is profoundly irritating on this and on The Big Picture.
Yasi used to have takes. Now she seems fenced in.
Her catchphrases get old fast, but I like her sincerity and depth of knowledge. Most of the less appealing aspects of the show were likely not her ideas. She seems like a lovely person with a lot to say, so it’s depressing to see it go like this.
