I Was Doing Everything Except Writing (And It Was Holding Me Back)

E47 - I Was Doing Everything Except Writing (And It Was Holding Me Back) Episode Summary In this episode, I reflect on my early attempt at building an audience through YouTube before becoming a writer. While the platform seemed like the logical path, I soon realized that creating videos drained my energy rather than fueling it. Through that experience, I discovered an important truth: I had become so distracted by everything surrounding Writing that I had stopped prioritizing the act of writing itself. I share how returning to online writing through Medium and Substack helped me reconnect with my original dream of becoming a writer and taught me the importance of keeping the main thing the main thing. Key Points Discussed Why building a YouTube channel felt misaligned despite good intentions. The difference between enjoying the message and enjoying the medium. How fear, overwhelm, and endless learning delayed my writing journey. The distinction between being a writer and being an author. Why writing should come before marketing, publishing, audience growth, and productivity systems. How prioritizing writing led to more ideas, greater creative energy, and a stronger connection to my work. The importance of treating writing like a real job rather than an optional activity.Takeaways Your primary creative goal should guide your daily priorities.Supporting tasks are valuable, but they should never replace the actual work.Inspiration often appears after you begin, not before.Protect your best energy for the work that matters most.Identify what counts as writing for you and make it a non-negotiable priority. No amount of planning, marketing, or preparation can replace putting words on the page. The main thing is to keep Writing the main thing. --- Send in your suggestions and questions here. 🏡 My homes on the internet - Substack  Spotify |Apple Podcast |Amazon Music YouTube |YouTube Music |Substack (podcast) A Rubina’s Bojra Production Directed, produced, written, and hosted by Rubina Gauri Gomes Music by "Happy Lazy Loop" by Serge Quadrado (At Adobe Stock) Audio-visual edited and marketed by Rubina Gauri Gomes Fueled by coffee ☕ and made with love for fellow writers and creatives 🤍 About Podcast - Welcome to Becoming A Writer, where writing inspiration is served fresh in 20 minutes or less, every 4th Saturday. What If Your Writing Isn't Unproductive — Just Misaligned?

E44 – What If Your Writing Isn't Unproductive — Just Misaligned? Episode Summary: In this episode, I reflect on a powerful insight I gained from the book How To Cultivate A Thriving Author Ecosystem by Russell Nohelty. The book outlines five different author archetypes—Desert, Grassland, Tundra, Forest, and Aquatic—and explains how each represents a distinct way writers naturally create, publish, and connect with their audience. I explore how understanding these ecosystems can help writers identify their natural tendencies and build a writing process that supports their strengths rather than fighting against them. Through my own experience, I share the realization that I am a “Forest” writer who had been trying to operate like a “Desert.” This misalignment led to frustration, creative exhaustion, and difficulty keeping up with the fast-paced demands of modern online content creation. The episode encourages writers to step back from generic productivity advice and instead align their creative process with their true writing nature. Key Points Discussed: The five author ecosystems: Desert, Grassland, Tundra, Forest, and Aquatic. How each ecosystem approaches writing, productivity, and audience building differently. Why the “Desert” model dominates online writing advice and content culture. My realization that I naturally writes like a Forest—focused on depth, resonance, and connection. The pressure of algorithms and online platforms to produce fast, high-frequency content. The contrast between fast-output writing models and slower, more reflective creative processes. The idea that productivity may feel difficult simply because a writer is working against their natural ecosystem.Takeaways: Writing struggles may come from misalignment rather than lack of discipline or productivity.Identifying one’s natural writing ecosystem can bring clarity and creative peace. Not all writers thrive under the same pace, structure, or publishing model.Filtering writing advice through one’s own creative nature is essential for long-term sustainability.Resources Mentioned: How To Cultivate A Thriving Author Ecosystem by Russell NoheltyRussell Nohelty’s Substack --- Send in your suggestions and questions here. 📚 My non-fiction book for writers - Soul Writer vs. Social Writer - Find Out Which One Are You?, Why Is It Important, and Finding Your Sweet Spot. Amazon US  | Amazon UK   | Amazon India 🏡 My homes on the internet - Substack  Spotify |Apple Podcast |Amazon Music YouTube |YouTube Music |Substack (podcast) A Rubina’s Bojra Production Directed, produced, written, and hosted by Rubina Gauri Gomes Music by "Happy Lazy Loop" by Serge Quadrado (At Adobe Stock) Audio-visual edited and marketed by Rubina Gauri Gomes Fueled by coffee ☕ and made with love for fellow writers and creatives 🤍 About Podcast - Welcome to Becoming A Writer, where writing inspiration is served fresh in 20 minutes or less, every 4th Saturday. Are You Planning Your Writing As If Life Won’t Interfere?

E43 - Are You Planning Your Writing As If Life Won’t Interfere? Episode Summary: In this deeply personal episode, I reflect on what happens when we plan our writing — and our lives — as if nothing will ever interfere. I entered 2025 with ambitious goals, only to watch every single one fall apart. Chronic health struggles, nervous system breakdown, unresolved trauma, and the long-term impact of living with PCOS forced me to confront a hard truth: I had been planning like a machine, not a human. This episode questions hustle culture, productivity obsession, and the illusion of control. What if our plans worked with Life instead of against it? Key Points Discussed: The illusion of invincibility in goal-settingHow over-planning can dysregulate your nervous systemPCOS, chronic stress, and the body as a messengerWhy hustle culture ignores human transition timeThe hidden time costs between tasks (exercise example)How overbooking becomes a form of self-worth validationHealing before productivityCo-creating plans with Life instead of controlling it Takeaways: Build buffer time into your schedule.Plan for transitions, not just tasks.Your health is not an inconvenience — it’s information.Discipline without compassion leads to burnout.Ambition doesn’t need self-punishment attached to it.Life’s interruptions may be redirections.Sustainable creativity requires nervous system safety.Ask yourself: Are you planning as a machine — or as a living, breathing human? --- Send in your suggestions and questions here. Do You Regret Being A Writer?

E42 - Do You Regret Being A Writer? Episode Summary: In this reflective and deeply personal episode, Rubina revisits a decision she made in 2016—to step away from the expected path after college and pursue writing. As social media revives nostalgia for “simpler times,” she finds herself asking a question she recently voiced in therapy: Do I regret choosing to be a writer? Her answer is clear: Absolutely not. Although life didn’t unfold as she once imagined, writing became the one constant that helped her survive, heal, and slowly return to herself. This episode is an honest conversation for writers who feel behind, doubtful, or unsure if they made the right choice. Key Points Discussed: The emotional pull of nostalgia and how it triggers self-questioningChoosing writing with hope, ambition, and rose-tinted expectationsHow depression and disillusionment shaped the early yearsWriting and reading as lifelines during emotional isolationJournaling as a long-term practice that led to self-awareness and clarityWriting as a safe space for vulnerability without judgmentChoosing a less-trodden path and avoiding deeper misalignmentWhy writing became a way to uncover the real self beneath conditioningTakeaways: Writing doesn’t have to look successful to be life-changingSometimes the path that looks “nasty” is the one that leads you homeJournaling can be a powerful tool for healing and self-discoveryDoubt doesn’t mean you chose wrong—it may mean you’re growingBe kind to your past self and gentle with where you are now2026 is a fresh invitation to choose yourself and your writing again✨ This episode is for anyone wondering if choosing writing was a mistake—and discovering it may have been an act of survival instead. --- Send in your suggestions and questions here. Befriend Your Creative Fears.

E40 - Befriend Your Creative Fears. Episode Summary: After a health break, I return to explore the role of fear in a writer’s journey with you. Fear of judgment, rejection, or not being “good enough” can paralyze creativity, yet fear also signals growth. Through personal reflections, a cycling metaphor, and wisdom from Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, I share how we writers can reframe fear as a companion instead of a roadblock. Key Points Discussed: Fear is natural and part of writing. Common fears: judgment, failure, rejection, imposter syndrome. Writing is vulnerable—criticism feels personal. Fear mirrors learning cycles: wobble, fall, rise, succeed. Challenges expand your comfort zone and help you “level up.” Fear can join the journey, but it doesn’t get to drive. Takeaways: Fear points to where your growth awaits. By befriending it and letting courage lead, you’ll not only keep writing—you’ll watch your journey thrive. --- Send in your suggestions and questions here. 📚 My non-fiction book for writers - Soul Writer vs. Social Writer - Find Out Which One Are You?, Why Is It Important, and Finding Your Sweet Spot. Amazon US  | Amazon UK   | Amazon India 🏡 My homes on the internet - Substack  Spotify |Apple Podcast |Amazon Music YouTube |YouTube Music |Substack (podcast) A Rubina’s Bojra Production Directed, produced, written, and hosted by Rubina Gauri Gomes Music by "Happy Lazy Loop" by Serge Quadrado (At Adobe Stock) Audio-visual edited and marketed by Rubina Gauri Gomes Fueled by coffee ☕ and made with love for fellow writers and creatives 🤍 About Podcast - Welcome to Becoming A Writer, where writing inspiration is served fresh in 20 minutes or less, every 2nd and 4th Saturday.
