Laura Deneen and Lauren Jackson are thrilled to be hosting the Becoming Anchored Podcast together. Lauren had the idea of starting a podcast, and Laura jumped on board. We are two humans here to ride the waves of life together, sharing in your grief and pain and celebrating with you in your joy. We also have the unique perspective of being therapists and are excited to share about our therapeutic experiences on this platform.     Becoming Anchored S7E1: Your Body Is Not The Problem - Weight Stigma Is

    Host and licensed therapist Laura Deneen is joined by licensed therapist and owner of Ashley Vicari Counseling, Ashley Vicari. Together we discuss the different aspects of weight stigma and the impact it has on body image. Key Takeaways: What Is Weight Stigma?: Ashley explains that weight stigma is how we view certain bodies differently than other bodies. Weight stigma says those who are not in a smaller body are less than. One part of body image is how we perceive others perceive us. If you perceive others view you differently due to your body size, you may feel less than worthy. Where Does It Show Up?: Together we discuss that weight stigma shows up in many ways, such as children playing with dolls that are in a thin body and stigma in the medical field, namely with using BMI. Ashley encourages us to teach our children and ourselves that fat is not a bad word. Challenging Our Own Stigma: Ashley encourages us to challenge our own language and biases we may use and have. Notice if you are engaging or not engaging in certain activities due to fear of our weight changing. Laura and Ashley invite you to explore your own stigma with compassion.     Becoming Anchored S6E12: The Intersection Between Body Image and Nutrition

    Host and licensed therapist Laura Deneen is joined by Registered Dietitian and Director of Outpatient Nutrition at The Renfrew Center, Becky Mehr. Together we begin exploring the impacts of nutrition and how it may affect our body image. Key Takeaways: The Role of a Dietitian and Nutrition: Nutrition therapy counsels clients on the role of nutrition in their body as well as untangles misconceptions around food. Becky emphasizes the importance of eating adequately and consistently each day. When we engage in restrictive eating patterns, this impacts your body image, your body may experience symptoms such as bloating which may increase your distress with your body. How Food Affects Body Image: Together we discuss the many ways food affects body image. One of them being how mental and physical restriction affects our relationship with food which then affects our relationship with our body. Nourishing our bodies is one way to live a beautiful and meaningful life. Weight Gain and Nutrition: Becky shares that our bodies are designed to change and mature. She discusses the idea of exploring how weight suppression through restriction interferes with their lives. Laura discusses this idea that it is about the weight and it’s also not. She explores how if we do eat in a nourishing way, then our weight may go up, but on a deeper level, if we gain weight then there are typically fears associated with not being accepted or facing oppression. Together they explore the idea of accepting our bodies and getting our needs met.     Host and licensed therapist Laura Deneen is joined by fellow host and licensed therapist Lauren Jackson. Together we discuss what body peace really means and how to navigate it when we experience discomfort in our bodies. Key Takeaways: What Is Body Peace?: We discuss the myth that body peace means we need to love our bodies or accept our bodies all the time. Lauren and Laura discuss how body peace looks like staying connected to our bodies even when we are experiencing discomfort and distress in our bodies, or if we feel our bodies have betrayed us or we cannot trust them. Moving Towards Body Peace: Lauren explores the idea that when we are uncomfortable in our bodies, regardless of the reason, it doesn’t mean our bodies are doing something wrong.     Becoming Anchored S6E8: How Negative Core Beliefs Impact Our Body Image

    Host and licensed therapist Laura Deneen is hosting this episode of Becoming Anchored. Laura discusses how negative core beliefs can impact our body image and our relationship with our bodies. Key Takeaways:  Negative Core Beliefs: A negative core belief is a belief about ourselves that develops in early childhood or adolescence. Examples include: I am unlovable, I am weak, I am defective, and I am powerless. Here’s a link to negative and positive core beliefs: List of Negative and Positive Core Beliefs. There are also themes linked to these beliefs such as: themes of safety, powerlessness, and helplessness. Laura discusses these beliefs develop due to something that happens to us such as trauma.  How To Identify Negative Core Beliefs: Laura discusses asking yourself how you respond to pain in your life or when you make a mistake. She encourages you to use “socratic questioning” and when you have a thought, for example, “Maybe this person is mad at me?”, ask yourself, “What does that mean,” or “Why is that important?” This helps you explore the root of the negative core belief. Beliefs and Body Image: It is important to explore where you learned your current beliefs about your body. You may have watched a movie or were bullied about your body and you learned a message about your body. Laura invites you to explore any present day behaviors, such as body checking, that contributes to your negative belief about your body. She also reminds you there is more to the story, meaning that our bodies are always doing the best they can to protect us. This episode provides insight into what our negative beliefs are and how they affect our view and relationship with our bodies. Homework: Look at negative core belief lists, ask yourself questions to identify your core belief, and to consider working with a professional to heal these wounds.     Becoming Anchored S6E7: How To Respond To Comments About Your Body

    In this episode of Becoming Anchored, co-host and licensed therapist Laura Deneen is joined by co-host and licensed therapist Lauren Jackson. Together they discuss how you can respond if someone comments on your body or you overhear someone commenting on someone else’s body. Key Takeaways: Check In With Self: When an experience like this happens, notice what your thoughts, emotions, and automatic beliefs about yourself are. Lauren discusses attuning to her clients and validating their emotions. How Do I Respond?: Laura and Lauren discuss common responses to these experiences. They also discuss that different people have different responses to these types of comments. Some individuals may choose to set a boundary, others may feel frozen and need time to process what to do moving forward. Shift Your Perspective: It may feel incredibly difficult to experience a comment about your body, and Lauren encourages you to shift your internal dialogue from, “What is wrong with me?” to “What does this say about the other person?” Together we discuss why people may comment on your body or others’ bodies. This episode provides insight into how to respond in a compassionate way towards self when a comment about your body or someone else’s body is made and how to navigate it.     Becoming Anchored S6E6: Moving From Body Image To Embodiment

    In this episode of Becoming Anchored, co-host and licensed therapist Laura Deneen is joined by fellow licensed therapist Heidi Hensley. Together they share the idea of embodiment, how to reconnect to yourself and your body, and how this improves body image. Key Takeaways: What Is Embodiment?: Embodiment is the experience of being in your body and reconnecting your head to your heart. It is about having congruence with your head, heart, body, soul, and mind. Heidi and Laura discuss how common it is to struggle with embodiment. Ways In Which We Disconnect From Our Bodies: Together we discuss many things that disconnect us from our bodies, such as the experience of trauma. Heidi and Laura also talk about self-abandonment, which is deprioritization of self. This may look like denying your hunger cues; or perhaps your parents did not teach you to set boundaries, so you struggle in the present with assertiveness skills. Interventions To Become More Embodied: Heidi encourages listeners to practice noticing bodily sensations and attuning to them without needing to fix them. She reminds us bodily sensations are messages telling us what we may need. Together we discuss using the interventions of body scan and mirror work to become more embodied.
