Key Takeaways: What Is Image Management?: Image management is our desire to be perceived a certain way. It is rooted in deep fear and longing for connection, belonging, and acceptance from others. Laura explains the negative consequences of it such as, showing up inauthentically and we become disconnected from our bodies. Becoming Anchored S7E8: Why “You’re Not Fat” Isn't Helpful Reassurance for Your Child's Brain

Host and licensed therapist Laura Deneen is joined by co-host and fellow licensed therapist, Lauren Jackson. Together we discuss the harmful consequences that may arise when we teach our children they're "not fat" and how to navigate this conversation instead. Key Takeaways: Our Children and Body Image: It is common for our children to come to us with body image concerns. Your child may have expressed a fear of being called "fat," which has become a weaponized word in our culture. Often parents reassure their child they are not fat; this statement and reassurance actually does more harm than good. Lauren validates us that when we reassure our child, we, as a parent, want to take away any of our child’s distress and take away their pain. However, there are better ways to support a child in coping through this possible distressing experience. “Fat” Is Not a Bad Word: Lauren discusses when we reassure our child that they are not fat, we are reinforcing the idea that being fat is unacceptable and bad. It teaches our children to worry that they won’t be accepted or loved if they are “fat”. Changing How We Respond: Laura discusses being curious about where your child learned this language. This opens up dialogue and connection with your child. Further, this promotes deeper conversation with your children and consideration of how to move forward if this fear is present. Lauren encourages us to shift our language about body image from appearance to function. Together we invite you to do your own body image work and be curious about your own internalized weight stigma. This episode provides insight into our children’s body image concerns and how we can respond to them in a healthy way. Homework: Reflect how you have responded when your child or children have come to you with a body image concern and explore what you may want to do differently. Affirmation: “I am capable of having these hard conversations.” Friend, we are passionate about offering more support beyond the insights and advice in this podcast.  Becoming Anchored Co. is rooted in the belief that hope is fundamental to our human experience. Becoming Anchored S7E7: When You Feel Like Your Body Betrayed You

Host and licensed therapist Laura Deneen is joined by co-host and fellow licensed therapist, Lauren Jackson. Together we discuss the spectrum of body betrayal and how to move through the grief of when you feel like your body has let you down. Key Takeaways: What Is Body Betrayal?: Body betrayal is any experience in which we may feel like our body is not working the way we believe it should, does not look the way we believe it should, or we feel let down by our body. This could include chronic illness or pain, medical conditions, infertility, just to name a few. Body betrayal is often rooted in loss; loss of expectation. It may also feel like a threat to our fundamental human need of belonging or acceptance. Lauren discusses the idea of, “If my body does not function a certain way or look a certain way, will I be accepted?” Healing From Body Betrayal: The first piece we discuss is acknowledging the pain and suffering we may be experiencing from the betrayal. Laura and Lauren discuss the importance of attuning to the pain and believing someone’s experience while also slowing down and sitting with the pain rather than rushing through it or trying to fix it. Ways To Support Yourself: Laura encourages us to find a community who can support us, believe our stories, and advocate for us when we feel as if our body has betrayed us. Also, she encourages us to hold space for grief. Lauren encourages us to practice compassion for our bodies and provides questions to help us be compassionate towards our bodies in the midst of pain.
