Becoming Buffy

I originally watched Buffy as it aired and decided in January to finally get around to rewatching. I decided to pair the rewatch with a podcast and found y’all. It’s been great getting some deep intel to go along with my rewatch. Can’t wait to hear season 7 as I’m about halfway through watching it.

I really enjoy this podcast in general. I like their approach and talking about metaphors and themes! I think the balance between the spoiler, free episodes and the spoiler episodes as well done and it’s fun to think about the series in different contexts in that way. Their overall analysis of the show is heavily skewed. The hosts have made up their minds about characters and storylines which leaves little room for solid discussions. This is particularly notable because all of the hosts have the same opinions on most of what they discuss. They bring up alternate perspectives just to quickly shut them down without fully engaging or valuing them. It would also benefit the hosts to learn a little bit more about race and sexuality when approaching certain subjects as their analysis can feel very limited in that regard. For example, their discussion of Trick in season 3 failed to acknowledge that Forrest was a character of color that was in 12 episodes of the series. When they do bring on guests or fans, it seems to be the same perspectives being brought up thus far (I’m on season 3). Hopefully that will change in the future and there will be more dynamic discussions, particularly when it comes to Xander, Giles, Tara, and Spike.

This podcast is so enjoyable. It is fun and informative. One of my favorite Buffy podcasts. Thanks so much!
