Rewriting the Narrative of Modest Fashion

Ayah Rashid is an African American Muslim women, entrepreneur, and aspiring home chef. A recent graduate of New York University Abu Dhabi where she majored in Literature and Creative Writing, she became a Venture for America fellow in May 2019 and at the time of recording this episode was working as a Director of Content at Citizen Yoga, a Michigan based yoga studio with four locations, including one in Cleveland. Ayah started her own fashion line officially as a junior in college, called Sinjab. The company has foundational values of sustainability, ethical manufacturing and making clothing to accommodate a modest wardrobe. She also started a side business doing marketing and creative consulting work for small businesses, managing social media accounts and building websites. Her favorite ways to spend her free time include watching anime, cooking, and taking care of the plants she can’t stop buying. I know Ayah from VFA as a fellow in the same year as me and have always wanted to dig deeper into her background and her story starting Sinjab. In our conversation, we cover everything from what it was like growing up in Dubai as a child and being home schooled to how her love for fashion started, what inspired her to start Sinjab, the lessons she’s learned since starting her business, and of course, how she’s becoming. Excited for you to take a listen.Need more info? Find show notes and transcriptions on my website: justinegkim.com.
