From Setbacks to Triumph: Alex Burks

From Setbacks to Triumph: Alex Burks

In Spring of 2021, Alex had a breakthrough performance at the first McKirdy Micro Marathon. He ran 2:16:51, destroying his personal best and running a time that would be under the eventual Olympic Trials qualifying standard of 2:18:00. The problem? The standard window hadn't started. Over the next two years he would take multiple shots at the standard and would come up short on the day. After four attempts at it, he would line up for his last shot this past October, less than two months before the window closed.

Alex takes us through his journey, going into detail on his mentality, the adjustments he made, and everything that led to his last shot back at Rockland State Park, back to where it all started those few short years ago. We talk about his build, adjusting to altitude, race day, qualifying for the Olympic Trials, and about his preparations for his next race, the Olympic Trials Marathon this February. And of course we have to end out the podcast as we always do, with off the wall questions.

Josh Peterson Part 1: Walking Away, Reigniting the Spark, & First Breakthrough

Josh Peterson Part 1: Walking Away, Reigniting the Spark, & First Breakthrough

Josh Peterson joins us for the first of a great two part series! Josh hosts his own podcast, Chasing Three Hours, a podcast about what runners are chasing, why they keep pushing themselves, and what keeps them curious.

We talk with Josh, the week before his big Fall race at the Des Moines Marathon. We start the podcast with his origin story, from running in high school to walking away from it to pursue other passions, and then finding it once again as an adult. We talk motivations to keep doing it, setbacks in those early years, and about finding a way to have running as a positive outlet. We close out part one on a high note, with a special race that got him to start thinking about what was possible.

We're back with another installment of Beers and Miles: The Elite Files! Joining us today is Pittsburgh Track Club's own, Colin Martin! Fresh off of his Olympic Trials Qualifier at Grandmas Marathon this past June, Colin joins us to chat about his running journey. We join Colin in part 2 of this series as he talks about his introduction to the Pittsburgh Track Club. We discuss his build up to Grandmas Marathon and finally what we all came to hear, his OTQ. We couldn't let Colin off that easy though, we had to hit em with our classic series of unhinged questions.

Could use more pancakes

If you ever wanted to hear top notch banter about running between a sub elite long distance athlete and his multiple guest, family, crew, and alcohol driven shenanigans involving a pair of Vaporfly Next %s then you’ve found the right podcast. Through interviewing elite running athletes from the track to the trails and ultra distances or shorter, you get a solid hour of interaction and dialogue you wouldn’t typically hear otherwise out of athletes. The host’s personal life, interest, and genuine passion for marathoning and all distances within his running community show in each episode. His friends hitch along for the ride and also involve listeners in their running life updates, predictions, and race recaps for anyone to enjoy.

Did I mention there’s beer too?

Expect there’s no pancakes. Might want to fix that . . .

Really enjoyable

Really good running talk and other stuff. Just listened to the winter running episode and they had some really good advice/tips. If you’re someone who enjoys running at all, you’ll like this podcast.
