Beneath the Trade

Maria Fuller

Beneath the Trade explores what happens underneath our decisions in the market: the psychology, emotion, identity, expectations, and patterns we bring with us to the chart. Hosted by trader and educator Maria Fuller, each episode looks beyond strategy and into the human behavior behind how we respond to uncertainty, risk, success, and loss. Because the trade is only what you can see.

  1. Episode 1

    You Come With You

You can learn the strategy. Study the charts. Build the perfect trading plan. And still find yourself making decisions you don't quite understand. Because when you sit down in front of the charts, you don't arrive as a blank slate. You come with you. Your experiences. Your relationship with money. The ways you've learned to navigate uncertainty, disappointment, achievement, and control. Even the strengths that have carried you successfully through other parts of your life can show up differently when money is on the line. In this opening episode of Beneath the Trade, Maria Fuller explores what happens when the person we have spent a lifetime becoming meets the uncertainty of the markets. Drawing from her experiences in critical care medicine, entrepreneurship, and her own trading journey, Maria reflects on how familiar patterns can take on entirely new meaning in an environment where outcomes are never guaranteed. We'll explore why two traders can make the same mistake for completely different reasons, why technical knowledge alone doesn't always change our behavior, and what becomes possible when we begin approaching our reactions with curiosity rather than judgment. Because sometimes the most important thing to understand isn't what happened on the chart. It's what was happening within you. In this episode, we explore: Why your personal history follows you into the marketsHow strengths from other areas of life can become challenges in tradingThe deeper reasons behind seemingly identical trading behaviorsThe relationship between uncertainty, money, control, and emotional reactionsWhy awareness and curiosity are the beginning of meaningful change A question to carry with you: What parts of yourself are you bringing to the charts, and which of those parts might be asking for your attention? 2. Episode 2

What are you asking trading to give you?

We come to trading for all kinds of reasons. Financial freedom. Independence. Flexibility. The possibility of building a life that looks a little different from the one we're living. But somewhere beneath those goals, there may be something else we're hoping the markets will give us. Security. Validation. A sense of accomplishment. Proof that we're capable. Perhaps even permission to finally feel successful, worthy, or enough. And often, we don't realize just how much meaning we've attached to trading until the market doesn't give us what we hoped it would. In this episode of Beneath the Trade, Maria Fuller invites us to look beyond our financial goals and explore the emotional expectations we may be placing on our trading. What happens when a profitable day becomes proof of our worth? When a losing trade feels like a personal failure? When the promise of financial freedom quietly becomes a demand that trading somehow fix everything else in our lives? Through personal reflection and an exploration of the stories we tell ourselves about success, Maria examines the difference between pursuing something meaningful and asking it to carry the weight of our identity. Because trading can offer opportunity, growth, and the possibility of financial independence. But there are some things the market was never designed to give us. And recognizing that difference may change the way we experience both our wins and our losses. In this episode, we explore: The difference between our stated trading goals and the emotional needs beneath themHow money, achievement, and self-worth can become intertwinedWhy trading outcomes can feel deeply personalThe hidden expectations we place on financial successWhat happens when we begin separating our identity from our performanceHow greater self-awareness can change our relationship with the markets A question to carry with you: If trading gave you the financial success you're working toward tomorrow, what would you hope would finally feel different about your life, or about yourself? And is that something trading can actually give you? Welcome to Beneath the Trade, where we go beyond the charts to explore the human experience behind every decision. 3. Episode 3

When the outcome becomes the evidence

You followed your plan. Waited for your setup. Managed your risk. Made a thoughtful decision. And the trade lost. So what does that mean? Was it a bad trade? Did you miss something? Are you not as capable as you thought you were? Now imagine the opposite. You ignored your rules, entered impulsively, and walked away with a profit. Does that make it a good trade? In trading, the outcome is immediate, visible, and often measured down to the dollar. It's tempting to use that number as evidence of whether we made the right decision, whether we're improving, and sometimes, whether we're good enough to succeed at all. But outcomes don't always tell the whole story. In this episode of Beneath the Trade, Maria Fuller explores what happens when we begin treating results as proof of our abilities, our progress, and even our worth. We'll examine how easily the mind creates stories around wins and losses, why a profitable trade isn't necessarily a well-executed one, and how a losing trade can still represent meaningful progress. Because markets operate in probabilities, not promises. We can make thoughtful decisions and experience disappointing outcomes. We can make poor decisions and be rewarded for them. And when we allow the result to determine the meaning of the experience, we risk learning the wrong lessons. This conversation invites us to reconsider how we measure success, how we evaluate our decisions, and what it might look like to recognize growth that doesn't always appear in our profit and loss. In this episode, we explore: Why we instinctively use outcomes to judge the quality of our decisionsThe difference between a good trade and a profitable tradeHow wins can reinforce poor habits and losses can undermine good onesWhy outcome-based thinking can distort our understanding of progressThe emotional weight we attach to being right or wrongHow to begin evaluating ourselves through the quality of our process rather than the result alone A question to carry with you: Think about a recent trade that didn't go the way you hoped. If you removed the profit or loss from the equation entirely, how would you evaluate the decision you made? And would your answer change?
