Dasch Sits On The Bennier & Avgenicos Tuckerbox

Dasch Sits On The Bennier & Avgenicos Tuckerbox

Two of Australia’s Up and Coming Jazz Musicians, with a great love of Jazz and Improvised Music, have collaborated on a new chord-less project called TUCKERBOX.

Trombonist Josh Bennier and Trumpeter Tom Avegenicos met when they were both competing in the National Jazz Awards in 2017 and have released the debut album – DASCH on STATIC Records.

Their aim is to explore the textures available in a chord-less ensemble within the realm of contemporary jazz and improvisation, and the album features original compositions from members of the band, drawing upon the Australian history of chord-less ensembles.  The chord-less approach provides an opportunity, as Tom says, to “Embrace The Space” left where the piano and guitar might otherwise have been.

A four-piece band with Melbourne drummer Luke Andressen and Sydney Bass player Jacques Emery, the project was named after the main tourist feature they found at the 1/2 way point in their drives between Sydney and Melbourne.  Hear why the front cover of their debut album features a masked and caped daschund sitting atop the ‘Tuckerbox’ from Gundagai.

    Memories of Don Burrows

    Memories of Don Burrows

Don Burrows passed away on March 12, 2020 at the age of 91, leaving an amazing legacy in a treasure trove of recordings, his establishment of the first Jazz music course at the Sydney Conservatorium, and the many amazing musicians who have been influenced by Don’s mentoring, encouragement and the example he has set.

One of those musicians who worked with Don across a number of years, and has many fine memories, is Melbourne based drummer/percussionist David Jones.  David remembers Don as “an icon and a treasure in the music world”, and posted a heartfelt tribute to Don as well as chatting about his many warm memories with David Moyle on Bent Notes.

David remembers the generosity and enthusiasm that Don showed for other musicians, whether on the stage, in the studio or in the schoolroom.

Tamara’s Album Is More Than A Dream

Tamara’s Album Is More Than A Dream

Tamara Kuldin chatted with David Moyle on Bent Notes about her latest album – This May Only Be A Dream, an album of 11 pieces – three of which are self-composed by Tamara.  The title comes from the lyrics for “For All We Know”.

Tamara recalls that she was introduced to the Golden Era of Song by movie critic Bill Collins introducing the midday movies on television – movies where these songs played a large part.

It was a time when Tamara believes that people took pleasure in the simplicity of story-telling through song, the romantic lilt and technicolor dream time of song, perhaps even – the Pop Songs of the day.

Tamara’s latest album – her fourth, is entitled  This May Only Be A Dream, and features a painting by her father as the very beautiful coverart in the styling of Monet.

A great band featuring Sam Keevers (Piano), Jon Delaney and Nathan Slater (Guitars), Tamara Murphy (Double Bass), Steve Grant (Trumpet & Accordian), Julien Wilson (Tenor Sax) and Danny Fischer (Drums).
