Between Passports Ep. 09 - Both, Always

This week is different. Urmi Hossain asked us to use her real name. She was born in Italy. Her family is Bengali. She now lives in Canada. For years, she lived a dual life. Not because anyone asked her to. Because it was easier. Italian outside. Bengali at home. Different rooms. Different versions of herself. When people asked where she was from, being Italian was the simpler answer. Bengali felt watched. There were expectations. Pressure. Italy was lighter. Then she moved to Canada. And the question "where are you from?" suddenly didn't have one answer anymore. This episode explores what happens when you stop trying to choose between your cultures and start living both. About the traditions you once wanted distance from becoming the things you don't want to lose. About realizing that identity isn't a passport or a birthplace—it's the part of you that keeps showing up even after everything else changes. Urmi writes: "My blood tells one story. My birthplace tells another. And where I live tells yet another. But wherever I am, I am, and will always be, myself." This is a story about belonging to multiple worlds at once. About discovering that you don't have to choose. You can be all of it. Between Passports Ep. 08 - The Return

Emeka left Lagos for London at 22. Twelve years later, he finally went home. He expected to feel like himself again. Instead, he found that home had moved while he was away—not just the city, but his place in it. His accent was no longer Nigerian enough. He was called "the Londoner" with pride and love. But something about the name landed like a recognition of something he hadn't fully named himself yet. In London, he was always the immigrant. In Lagos, he was the Londoner. He did not fully belong anywhere. This episode explores what happens when you return to a place you've left behind, only to discover that you've changed so much you can no longer fit into the space you left. It's about reverse culture shock—not the shock of a new place, but the shock of a familiar place becoming unfamiliar. About third culture identity: belonging fully to neither the country you're from nor the country you're in. Building a third thing. Hybrid. Genuinely yours. But harder to explain. It's also about standing in a compound where you played football at ten years old and realizing you've become a stranger to your own history. About the gap that fills up quietly while you're somewhere else. And about what his mother told him—something so simple and so true that it changed how he understood the whole thing. This is a story about discovering that home might not be a place. It might be a question you stop asking. Between Passports explores the quiet moments when cultures collide and identities shift.
