How to Start a Cult and Ruin Everyone’s Life

This week on Between the States, Dan, Noel, and Jared take a darkly funny look at modern cults, how they operate, and why intelligent people can still get pulled into high-control groups. The guys break down the warning signs of a cult, including authoritarian leaders, isolation from friends and family, information control, emotional manipulation, financial exploitation, forced labor, and the demand for unquestioning loyalty. They also design their own competing sun, moon, and eclipse cults, complete with recruitment strategies, sacred minivans, pyramid schemes, crop labor, and an alarming amount of violence. Then they examine several real groups operating in the United States, including Twin Flames Universe, the Twelve Tribes and its Yellow Deli restaurants, the secretive Two by Twos movement, and OneTaste’s practice of orgasmic meditation. They discuss expensive spiritual coaching packages, communal living, religious manipulation, child labor allegations, forced labor convictions, sexual coercion, free Airbnb disguised as Christianity, and the thin line between a strange community and a full-blown cult. Could you recognize that you were in a cult before it was too late? Which cult would you join if you had no choice? And at what point does a religion, lifestyle group, self-help program, business, or government begin checking a few too many boxes? It is part cult documentary discussion, part comedy roast, and part deeply questionable brainstorming session from three friends who probably should not be allowed to start their own religion. If you enjoy cult documentaries, dark comedy, true crime, strange religions, high-control groups, Twin Flames Universe, Twelve Tribes, Two by Twos, OneTaste, spiritual scams, and chaotic podcast conversations, this episode is for you. If you or someone you know may be involved in a high-control group, resources for education and support are available through People Leave Cults, Freedom of Mind, I Got Out, and the Cult Education Institute. Your Dog Knows What You Did

This week on Between the States, Dan, Noel, and Jared open the door to the strange, chaotic, and occasionally traumatic world of pets. From Tamagotchis, Furbies, Chia Pets, Sea-Monkeys, pet rocks, and ant farms to pigeons, hamsters, rabbits, hermit crabs, talking parrots, rescue dogs, and possibly racist pets, no animal is safe from the conversation. The guys share childhood pet stories, discuss animals that escaped and somehow survived, and revisit the uncomfortable experience of returning a rescue dog that was not safe around children. They also explore lobster ethics, bizarre animal-based delicacies, robot dogs, and the terrifying possibility of giving every household pet the ability to speak. Would your dog expose your secrets? Could a robot pet replace the real thing? Is a pet rock technically safer than a parrot? And how long can a hamster secretly survive behind a refrigerator? It is an unfiltered comedy conversation packed with unusual pets, irresponsible childhood decisions, animal behavior, rescue stories, bizarre hypotheticals, and the kind of tangents that could only happen on Between the States. Trump: The Art of the Fail

This week on Between the States, Dan, Noel, and Jared take a brutally funny look at Donald J. Trump the businessman, walking through decades of Trump-branded ventures, lawsuits, bankruptcies, licensing deals, casinos, steaks, vodka, watches, NFTs, phones, and more. From the Trump Organization and Atlantic City casinos to Trump University, Trump Shuttle, Trump Steaks, Truth Social, Trump sneakers, the God Bless the USA Bible, and the $TRUMP meme coin, the guys break down how Trump built, sold, licensed, inflated, rebranded, and somehow kept moving on to the next thing. Along the way, they ask the obvious question: how does someone fail this many times and still keep getting funded? It is part business timeline, part comedy roast, and part confused investigation into gold shoes, bad steaks, fake luxury, casino bankruptcies, and the strange power of turning a name into a product. If you like political comedy, business history, Trump scandals, failed companies, chaotic podcast conversations, and three friends trying to make sense of American branding madness, this episode is for you. Moving the Needle Through Disruptive Synergy

Corporate buzzwords promise synergy, innovation, and strategic alignment, but do they communicate anything meaningful? Dan, Noel, and Jared break down the workplace jargon that makes meetings sound important while saying almost nothing. The guys explore a study on “corporate bullsh*t receptivity,” decode phrases like leverage, paradigm shift, low-hanging fruit, stakeholder engagement, and move the needle, and create painfully impressive corporate mission statements of their own. They also discuss fake productivity, doing more with less, cross-training your way out of a job, dishonest company culture, and why “we’re a family here” should probably be considered a warning. Along the way, the conversation drifts through AI hallucinations, questionable subscription scams, Father’s Day gifts, repeat shoulder surgery, uncomfortable drive-through encounters, talking animals, and the revolutionary new management strategy known as “human-centipeding the problem.” Topics include: corporate buzzwords, workplace culture, office jargon, corporate mission statements, bad management, AI hallucinations, employee burnout, productivity, business humor, and workplace comedy.  Send us Fan Mail Support the show Episodes available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@BetweenTheStates Follow us on Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Between-The-States/61574045351917/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/betweenthestatespod/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@betweenthestates BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/betweenthestates.bsky.social Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/BetweenTheStates/ Comments, questions, or suggestions can be sent to: Podcast@BetweenTheStates.com Best way to support the show: https://www.patreon.com/BetweentheStates

    Streetlights, Sharks, and Summer Break

Summer is officially here, and the guys are celebrating by remembering when the season actually felt endless. Dan, Noel, and Jared look back on the freedom of the last day of school, disappearing on bikes until the streetlights came on, digging pointless holes, starting questionable fires, getting bikes stolen, and making the kinds of childhood decisions that somehow did not end in disaster. Then the debate moves to everything that makes summer great, uncomfortable, or potentially dangerous. Lake, ocean, or pool? Soft serve or hard ice cream? Waffle cone or the weird cardboard-looking one? The guys also discuss overcrowded water parks, suspicious pool water, irrational shark fears, jellyfish, leeches, freezing lakes, river tubing disasters, sharp rocks, water shoes, and why jumping into unfamiliar water is rarely a smart idea. Plus, Dan shares the story of nearly losing a shoe at the bottom of a river, Noel explains why everyone waits until the hottest day of the year to fix their air conditioning, and the group tries to determine whether humidity, heat, or stupidity is the real problem with summer. It is a nostalgic, chaotic, and completely unfiltered trip through summer vacations, childhood freedom, beaches, pools, ice cream, cookouts, and all the strange memories that come rushing back when school lets out. What was summer like when you were growing up? Were you a lake, ocean, or pool person? Let us know at Podcast@BetweenTheStates.com. Surviving the Internet Apocalypse

What happens if the internet suddenly disappears worldwide and never comes back? In this episode of Between the States, Dan, Noel, and Jared imagine their first 24 hours, first week, and first year in a completely offline world. Without Google, GPS, streaming, online banking, digital payments, or YouTube tutorials, everyday life quickly starts looking less like a minor inconvenience and more like an accidental apocalypse. The conversation spirals through forgotten phone numbers, paper maps, busy signals, grocery shortages, backyard farming, questionable pickling techniques, scavenging for food, rebuilding society, the inevitable Gold Wars, and deciding which host would panic, survive, start a cult, or become dangerously comfortable without the internet. Could you navigate with an atlas, grow your own food, repair things without a tutorial, or remember how anything worked before everything went online? Let us know how long you think you would survive. Follow Between the States for more personal stories, absurd hypotheticals, unfiltered comedy, and chaotic conversations between three friends. Hollow Earth: Are We the Inside People?

Could the Earth actually be hollow, or is Hollow Earth one of the strangest conspiracy theories ever created? In this episode of Between the States, Dan, Noel, and Jared dive into the wild world of the Hollow Earth theory, from ancient myths about underground civilizations to Edmund Halley’s early scientific ideas, John Cleves Symmes Jr.’s “holes” at the poles, UFO conspiracies, secret Nazi bases, and the possibility of advanced beings living beneath our feet. Noel argues the pro-Hollow Earth side, Jared takes the scientific side against it, and Dan tries to keep the debate moving as the conversation spirals into gravity, volcanoes, underground lakes, ancient legends, magnetic anomalies, government cover-ups, the moon possibly being mined out of the Earth, and whether the planet is basically a giant 3D print with infill. Is Hollow Earth possible? Is science hiding something? Are there inner Earth people controlling our lives? Probably not, but that does not stop this debate from getting ridiculous fast. Listen as the guys debate one of the most bizarre conspiracy theories in history and decide for yourself: is the Earth hollow, or is the argument full of holes?
