S8 Ep. 2: Anna-From Chronic Pain to Purpose

S8 Ep. 2: Anna-From Chronic Pain to Purpose

In this Beyond Surviving Podcast, I catch up with Anna Holtzman, who graduated from Beyond Surviving in 2016.
In her previous career editing reality TV shows, she started to have severe migraines. These increased later on after she left this role and started graduate school. Anna shares with us how her pain points have led to self-discovery.
We also talk about how, following her work in Beyond Surviving, she was able to go on to help other survivors find relief from chronic pain through expressive writing.

    S8 Ep. 1: Rachel-My Beyond Surviving Story

    S8 Ep. 1: Rachel-My Beyond Surviving Story

As the Beyond Surviving Podcast enters its 8th season (whoa!), I am feeling called to do something special for 2021. Every month, I am going to interview a Beyond Surviving Graduate!
These amazing women and men who I have had the great honor to walk alongside in their healing journeys are going to be sharing their own stories of healing, discussing topics that they long to bring attention to – things like overcoming chronic pain, cultivating deep self-love, conquering fear, finding one’s voice, the healing power of art, navigating the court system and more!
And I thought I’d kick things off with my own story and what life looks like for me now 14 years after creating the Beyond Surviving program and living by the principles of this program!
I share how my story has evolved and changed over the years due to the continued integration of the abuse I’ve experienced. I get real about some of the fears I had to overcome in order to even step into this work. I share some of my favorite success stories of clients who I’ve had the honor to mentor over the years. Finally, I talk about what I hope this next year of Beyond Surviving will bring right before bursting into tears!

S7 Ep. 12: When Immigration Causes Silencing: One Woman's Story

S7 Ep. 12: When Immigration Causes Silencing: One Woman's Story

In this month’s episode, I speak with Alma Cheng. She shares her personal story of trauma and we discuss one of the most powerful self-care strategies we’ve both used to navigate the pandemic and all that 2020 has brought.
We discuss what it was like for her to be molested in her bed by her own father, to be shut down by Sunday School teachers, to be silenced by blood family, and to be reprimanded by the church even up to college, and to be told that the cause of immigration was more important than the safety of her body.

S7 Ep. 11: I Am Not a Victim: Overcoming Adversity

S7 Ep. 11: I Am Not a Victim: Overcoming Adversity

As a sexual assault survivor who was kidnapped and sexually assaulted at the age of twelve, Kevin McNeil understands what it is like to be a victim, but more importantly he knows what it takes to move beyond that point.
As a twenty-year police veteran, Kevin McNeil worked as a Special Victims Unit Detective for twelve of those years investigating child abuse crimes. After making the decision to retire from law enforcement, Kevin decided to use his extensive background and genuine insight to educate others on the effects of abuse.
We cover a lot of ground in this conversation – from Kevin’s harrowing story, to his views on what needs to happen to reform the police and justice system, to his deep desire to educate and raise awareness about trauma, to the power of healing….
You will not want to miss hearing Kevin’s inspiring story!

My daughter has just introduced me to your podcast. I am an author of children's books. One of my books is on sexual abuse prevention. I just listened to my first podcast and LOVE it. How I wish I would have discovered this before today. The way that we store pain and trauma in the body and mind is a very powerful thing and something I have been working on and studying. Thank you for these ideas. For our family Yoga and Meditation have really helped. Looking into Trauma yoga today. Thank you so much for this podcast and information. Kimberly
