Episode 71 - The Stock Market Is (Probably) Not Going to Zero

What would actually happen if the stock market went to zero? It is one of the biggest fears stopping people from investing: “What if I put my money into the stock market and lose everything?” In this episode of Beyond the Market, I break down what a stock market going to absolute zero would really mean. We look at how the stock market actually works with using the S&P 500 as the example, why individual companies can go bankrupt without the entire index disappearing, and how an index continually evolves as companies rise, fall and are replaced. But then we take the argument further. What would it take to actually go to zero? What would need to happen for every major company to become completely worthless? What happens to banks, currencies, property rights and the wider financial system in that scenario? And even after a catastrophic event, would businesses producing food, energy, medicine and transport really remain worthless forever? We also explore why people fear losing everything in the stock market in the first place, and how stories about failed companies, speculative investments and trading losses can distort how we think about diversified investing. If you have ever worried about investing in the S&P 500, ETFs or index funds because “the market could go to zero”, this episode is for you. Episode 68 - Why I care what people do with their money

Why should anyone care what other people do with their money? In this episode of Beyond the Market, I explain why helping people understand investing matters to me, and why this is not about telling everyone how they must manage their money but being informed. Too many people fall into one of two traps, speculation disguised as investing, or permanent inaction disguised as caution. Some constantly trade, chase market predictions and confuse activity with progress. Others leave long-term money sitting in cash because investing feels too risky, complicated or inaccessible. Despite the UK having one of the world’s largest financial-services industries, millions of people have never received useful financial education. As a result many high earners save consistently but still feel unqualified to invest. They research endlessly, wait for the perfect opportunity and lose years of potential compound growth. This episode explores the invisible cost of delaying investing, why intelligent people often use complexity to procrastinate, and how financial media and social platforms reward dramatic predictions rather than patient, long-term wealth building. I also discuss mistakes from my own 15 years of investing and why experience is not about avoiding every error. You do not need to become obsessed with finance. You need to understand your options, ignore unnecessary noise and develop a sustainable investment strategy that allows your money to work while you get on with your life. Episode 67 - Why I Think AI Won’t Solve Your Investing Problem

AI is changing the way people learn. This is for everything and not just about investing. Large language modlels such as ChatGPT and Claude can now explain complex financial concepts, analyse investment ideas and help people understand their own circumstances in seconds. But will AI actually make people better with their money ad better investors? In this episode of Beyond the Market, I explore the growing use of artificial intelligence in investing and why so many financial professionals are concerned about it. We look at the genuine risks, including privacy, incomplete information, unregulated financial advice and AI confidently producing incorrect answers. However, AI also has the potential to make financial education more accessible than ever. It can simplify investment terminology, answer follow-up questions, help you prepare for conversations with financial advisers and make previously complicated subjects easier to understand. The biggest limitation is not the technology though it is what the humans do with that behaviour. Knowledge is becoming almost free, but a lack of information was never the main reason people failed to invest. You can read books, listen to podcasts, scroll through investing content and ask ChatGPT endless questions but none of that builds wealth unless you act. This episode explores the difference between understanding and implementation, why consuming information can feel like progress, and how to use AI as an investing tool without outsourcing your decisions. AI can help you learn. It cannot take action for you that is why most people need help but not in the way that financial advisors work. If you enjoyed this episode, please give it 5 stars.
