David declares that God would not leave His Holy One in the realm of the dead nor allow Him to see corruption (Psalm 16:10), a statement the New Testament directly applies to the Messiah’s resurrection. Isaiah likewise foretells that after the Servant suffers and dies for the sins of the people, “He shall prolong His days” and see the results of His atoning work (Isaiah 53:10–11), implying life restored after death. Hosea presents the pattern of God raising His people on “the third day” (Hosea 6:2), a rhythm early Christians recognized as pointing toward Christ’s rising.     Introduction to The Godhead: The Baptism of Jesus | Steve Benson

    Baptism in the Bible has its roots in the Old Testament but takes on its full meaning in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, Israel practiced many forms of ritual washing. These washings were commanded for purification from uncleanness, for priestly consecration, and for approaching God in worship. They symbolized cleansing, repentance, and readiness to stand before a holy God. By the time of Jesus, Jewish converts from the nations also underwent a full‑body immersion as part of entering the covenant community. This was not yet Christian baptism, but it created a familiar pattern: washing, repentance, and a change of identity. In the New Testament, baptism becomes a single, decisive act. John the Baptist introduced a baptism of repentance that prepared Israel for the Messiah. Jesus Himself was baptized to fulfill righteousness and to inaugurate His ministry.
