    Nobody Can Tame The Tongue — What James Says About Words, Wisdom, And The Fire That Starts In The Mouth | James 3 | Bible Chapter by Chapter

    Nobody can tame the tongue. That is James's assessment — and he means it. Not difficult to control. Nobody can. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless God and with it we curse men made in the image of God. Out of the same mouth. In this episode of Bible Chapter by Chapter, we walk verse by verse through James Chapter 3. The warning about teachers — because words that shape others carry proportionally heavier judgment. Three images of the small thing with disproportionate effect: the bit in the horse's mouth, the rudder on the ship, the small fire that spreads to a large forest. And the tongue — set on fire by Gehenna itself. Then the contradiction James cannot leave unnamed. Out of the same mouth comes blessing of God and cursing of the person made in the image of God. A spring cannot send both fresh and bitter water from the same opening. A fig tree cannot yield olives. And a tongue that does both is revealing something about the source it is drawing from. Then the two wisdoms. The earthly wisdom — sensual and demonic — that produces bitter jealousy and selfish ambition — and from those: confusion and every evil deed. And the wisdom from above — first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the closing image: the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. The peacemakers are the farmers of righteousness. They put the seed in the particular soil the wisdom from above prepares — and what grows is what the earthly wisdom is always claiming to produce while actually preventing. Practical instructions that are not a departure from the argument — they are its conclusion. Let brotherly love continue. Hospitality to strangers. Solidarity with those in bonds — as bound with them. Freedom from the love of money grounded not in financial advice but in a promise: I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you. And the anchor of the chapter: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Then the concentrated application of the letter's theology to the readers' actual situation. The bodies of the sacrificial animals were burned outside the camp — in the place of shame. Therefore Jesus also suffered outside the gate. Let us therefore go out to him outside of the camp, bearing his reproach. For we don't have here an enduring city, but we seek that which is to come. This is what the letter has been building toward. The one you belong to is outside the gate. To stay inside for the sake of what the camp offers is to trade the unshakeable for the shakeable. Then the two sacrifices that replace the Levitical system: the sacrifice of praise continually through him, and the sacrifice of doing good and sharing. And the great benediction: the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant, make you complete in every good work, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight.
