Linux Doesn’t Suck – Here’s Why Even Normies Should Use It

Linux Doesn’t Suck – Here’s Why Even Normies Should Use It

Linux has long been viewed as a science fair project for nerds. We explain why Linux doesn’t suck and why it's now usable even for normies. Some of the items discussed: Issues with Windows, ease of use, performance (efficient use of resources), hardware support, application support, OS licensing, concerns about Windows/macOS/ChromeOS evolving into Orwellian adware. These other operating systems have their place, but we believe Linux should be used for personal and sensitive computing. Visit us at biggerinsights.com to request a consultation or read our blog. Google Domains Sale to Squarespace – Don’t Rely on Google

Google Domains Sale to Squarespace – Don’t Rely on Google

Google Domains is fresh out of beta and now being sold to Squarespace. You read that correctly - Google Domains is joining the Google graveyard. RIP. This deal, and how Google is handling it, is unethical and really grinds our gears. As of the time of producing this episode, Google has yet to inform us of this transaction - we had to find out about it on Twitter. However, this is a blessing in disguise, as this was the final nail in the coffin that was the last remaining shred of trust we had in Google. This was the nudge we needed to move our business to providers that actually respect their paying customers. If you rely on Google, you should, at a minimum, have a contingency plan in case they either shut down services you’re relying on or shut you down for some dubious reason. Twitter Alternative Mastodon Deserves a Closer Look

Twitter Alternative Mastodon Deserves a Closer Look

Mastodon is a Twitter alternative that deserves a closer look. One may assume it’s just another Gab, Parler, or Truth Social, but this isn’t the case. Mastodon is decentralized, federated, free and open-source software (FOSS) that anyone can use. There are many servers you can choose from to host your account, but if you don’t want to go that route, you can also self-host. This is the way social media should be. Mastodon is also part of a larger Fediverse through it’s implementation of ActivityPub, which is underappreciated and has great potential. We explain what this means for users, why it matters, as well as the pros and cons from our experiences. If you’re already a Mastodon user, follow us at https://mastodon.social/@biggerinsights. Why You Need a NAS (Network Attached Storage)

Why You Need a NAS (Network Attached Storage)

A Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a dedicated storage device that you interact with over a network. As time goes on, we accumulate more data and bigger files. Our storage needs seem to be outpacing the amount of available storage capacities on off-the-shelf PCs. In this event, where should you store your data? You can store it on an external hard drive, but these provide neither the storage space, nor the data protections a NAS will provide. You could also store your data in “the cloud” (someone else’s computer), but this presents serious privacy and security risks. In this episode, we explain these issues in more detail in addition to other benefits a NAS can provide (file sharing, media server, etc.).
