My name is Anita Powell. I'm a 50-year-old black female born in the UK I am suffering from the symptoms of perimenopause. A few years ago, I noticed that my body was responding different to how it used to be. Conversations with my peers and they too were noticing changes. I felt my overall health was deteriorating. As a 40 something year old woman I never really explored the topic of my health; I just lived it but not optimised on my health. After research I realised that I need to rethink my behaviour and take care of me.

Within the podcast I will be discussing the Menopause, Midlife, and Beyond, looking at life from my perceptive, a black female, exploring health and lives of women.

Belinda explains why she had to leave her job, rethink her life and value selfcare

Belinda explains why she had to leave her job, rethink her life and value selfcare

In today's episode, Belinda Ajayi, a 55-year-old post-menopausal woman, explains why she left her job and had to rethink her life and the need for self-care. Belinda has worked as an educator for many years, and she recently decided to give up her daytime full-time job and work in the evenings because she struggled in the mornings with her osteoarthritis.
Belinda has spent much time with her GPs over the past 10-plus years; however, her GP has never mentioned the word menopause to her. The doctor has told her she has to lose weight, look after herself, prescribed antidepressants and told her she needs to take care of her knees because she suffers from osteoarthritis. Still, the doctor has not once mentioned that her menopause could also impact her health, even though she suffers from night sweats and other possible menopause symptoms.

    Allyship
    Part 1 of 4.
As a woman of colour, dealing with menopause and other health issues can be challenging. That's why having menopause allies is crucial. However, what matters most in being a good ally is cultural competence, regardless of culture, colour, or race. Family culture can also play a significant role in how women experience menopause. Black women often feel unheard when seeking healthcare, which can further exacerbate their symptoms.
However, some women may not participate in menopause research for various reasons. Overall, it's crucial to have allies who are culturally competent and willing to listen and learn to ensure that all women receive the support and care they need during this time. Most women of colour have to work with menopause allies when dealing with Menopause and other health issues.
Some of the talking points in this episode
What matters is culture, colour or race.
    What makes a good Ally
We discuss the question, 'Where are you from?'
Family culture and how it impacts Menopause
Black women feel not heard when seeking health care.
    Strong black women
How do allies become culturally competent?
Why some women do not participate in menopause research.
