    S2. 7. EVERYTHING REDUCES

Musings from a stroll through a vide grenier in my village, that powerfully hit me with the notion that in the end, we have to give everything up, that everything in life eventually reduces. A vide grenier is akin to a flea market or a garage sale where ones own items are displayed for sale and repurposing in a new home.  While I like the idea of repurposing and relish the thought of a new life given to things and new joy gifted the inherited owner, I was caught off-guard by how sad I felt that everything in our lives gets reduced as a matter of course, a feature  of time… Perhaps it was the sale of so many books and records which had me saddened, in the knowing of what it takes to create those things.  But to reframe that sadness, I had to inquire into why we let go of things and perhaps there is beauty and purpose in knowing they no longer serve us or spark joy in us and in being intentional therefore about what we decide to hold on to and what we decide to cast off. Also that after the creation, it is for others to have the experience of joy in owning, indulging in that thing.  Thoughts were perhaps infused by musings from a previous episode about distillation and knowing what it is we want our lives to be and what we must give aside to pursue | have, that which we have identified as ours to hold | pursue | create in this life.  Musings also into how sad the notion of everything reducing can feel unless and until we use it to ignite our intentionality around choosing.  How an article in the Blackwing 602 newsletter - in the ‘Makers Series’ of conversations with a philosopher and creator - Julien de Medeiros gifted me a perspective that nothing is lost if we have lived our lives in honour and dedication to that which | those whom, we love without having ever given up on | ‘given ground’ to those dedications and desires.  So the invitation - is to be cognisant that if everything reduces, choose that and those in your life, with which and whom you will be happy remained, when much else is gone… From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 14 MIN EP, explores the idea that reduction occurs across every aspect of our lives over time, so we must seek to be present in choosing to devote time and energy to that which will remain, as other things fade or fall by the wayside of life… Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  REFERENCES BLACKWING (pencils) newsletter. They visit different villages annually through the French summer and are a popular weekend activity to wander and browse of a Sunday.  BROCANTE - is more of an antique market or store. The most famous international ones (outside of Paris) in the south of France would be in gorgeous Provençal town of Isle sir la Sorgue.  Support the show THANK YOU FOR LISTENING PURCHASE MY STORIES AT www.jemathison.com

S2. 6. THE PAYOFF IN THE PERSISTANCE

Musings into the notion of our diminishing ability to persist - made plain to me while reading a short book - INVISIBLE CITIES by Italo Calvino and wanting to put it down, as I was not yet clear of the message or even the premise. The sensation of restlessness amid even mild discomfort and the desire to exit before I’ve even given the book a chance or myself a real chance to adapt to the author’s gait, the stride of the book. The internal query arose of whether I have lost the ability to sit with something, stay in a book of which I know the author will grant me a payoff, an author I trust to lead me somewhere interesting and yet… the temptation was still to leave at the slightest sensation of discomfort… Musings into how much we may have lost if our attention spans have become  so short and so intolerant of discomfort or uncertainty. My dads ability to recall so much from his school days for the way he earned that knowledge, therein retaining it for many decades. To withstand and stay… and the benefit that comes when we do.  So the invitation is to trust and to stay in the book, the conversation, the hug…  This episode ends without a proper Thank you but on the idea, that to persist is to chance that unforeseen benefit. From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 11 MIN EP, explores the idea that we must persist beyond the tempting notion to cut away early from a task, a book, a conversation. That to resist and stay, with a force of effort to find out more, is the bridge to unforeseen delights that are gifted us in the instance where we choose to persist.  Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  REFERENCES BOOK INVISIBLE CITIES - Italo Calvino THE 9 MUSES OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polymnia, Terpsichore, Talia and Urania From the relationship of Mnemósine with Zeus, were the Muses born. S2. 5. BEING ABLE TO DISTIL

Musings into the notion of distillation and placing, as a priority, that which is essential to us, inclusive of our own essence and what we would wish to be remembered of us…  Inspired by an AROMA MEDITATION I led and what came through during that meditation. The notion that often things do not go how we envision them going but the lesson must be distilled from the road travelled, it’s pitfalls as well as its successes.  Musings into the book OLIQUITY by John Kay and the beauty of the unexpected path.  Also the inclusion of the poem IF by Rudyard Kipling and its message to treat adversity and triumph with equal measure, the pauper and the king with equal respect. The very task of the poet is to distil meaning from the multitude of words or emotions and to land them with delicacy and precision.  To be vigilant this in these times especially, and distil what is right, just, equitable when we are being sold messages from leaders that get spun and manipulated to capitulate and convince…  To distil compassion from events, kindness in polemic times and to distil our own moral compass in fast moving timeTheron lies the quest, even within ourselves… to distil what is true about the stories we tell ourselves and look more kindly upon others as well as on others.  From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 11 MIN EP, explores the idea that we must distill from our lives, what is important and how we wish to be moulded from our experiences and remembered by the essence of who we became…  Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  REFERENCES BOOKS OLIQUITY by John Kay  POWER IF NOW by Echart Tolle POEM IF by Rudyard Kipling AUTHOR Charles Dickens  Support the show THANK YOU FOR LISTENING PURCHASE MY STORIES AT www.jemathison.com

S2. 4. THE SCHISM - BEFORE AND AFTER

Musings into the before and after schism of grief encountered. The caution to be wary and careful around those who have dealt with deep things, their tolerance is low for the superficial or the minor incidents of life.  Inspired byan Insta post on grief by @maudsleystrong - and the one line that compelled me to share this episode. That the person you become after deep grief is an altogether different one and that the daily incidents or inconveniences “lose their authority” over your mood. This resonated with me and hit hard for its accuracy. The notion that a wrong coffee order, an invitation to gossip or complain loses its authority over you, after everything has been stripped bare in grief…  Story shared of a clock on my wall being shattered by a friend in grief, the loss of her first baby. I am sweeping up the shards but she has barely blinked, feeling like my heart was broken as I loved this clock. It was a present bought in a faraway land from friends as a final gift before I left… and yet… and yet… the fact it did not register was to show me my heart was not, in fact, broken at all - but, in contrast, hers was.  A profundity of grief I would not truly understand for many years.  Sharing the snippets of actor, Keanu Reeves, too and the choice to stay gentle and kind after tragedy, discerning as he did, that the earth angels are those who walk among us, where grief has humbled rather than hardened, in the end.  The question Tina Turner asked potential suitors and the answer that touched her heart from the one who became her husband and enduring love of her life. From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 12 MIN EP, explores the capacity to sit with wounds and be mutated from them, into kinder, gentler beings… so the caution for others becomes, to tread well with them for they entertain neither fools or superficiality after the schism. Such things lose authority over them, so the general populace caution is to treat their gentleness as a feature of their strength and character and not a bug… Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  NOTES: PS - excuse my struggle to pronounce the word SCHISM. I could not find a word to take its place so decided to press ‘publish’ anyway. Similarly, it may not be clear but I am aware of the difference between chasm (the gap) and schism (the split), which is the one I was seeking to share, without realising until I came to say it out loud that I was unable to pronounce it fluidly.  Go easy. Be gentle!  My website: www.jemathison.com Support the show THANK YOU FOR LISTENING PURCHASE MY STORIES AT www.jemathison.com

    S2. 3. THE REAL DEAL

Musings into the whether the quest for learning is over in the age of Artificial Intelligence. Inspired after a semi-legal encounter where a response came back at the speed of light, which was both unexpected and oddly impressive, but then immediately clouded in doubt, as to whether the person writing to us was legit in his knowledge… and therefore his leverage.  Musings into whether or not the only way to spot the real deal in years to come will be in a room - one on one - to know if the person with the knowledge really has it…. Or whether they have plugged in information and got an immediate response, of which they will retain nothing.  The idea of how will we know who has gone to the lengths to acquire knowledge and who has never made the endeavour.  No doubt, the ones who have to show up live and perform will be the winners. The tradespeople, the carers, the studio artists, the chefs, the musicians on stage, the parents teaching - none of whom can dial it in but must deliver.  For better or worse, we have always been able to tell one good tradesperson from another but now the test for many others will have to be the same applied  - can they deliver in person. Without AI, are they able to build an argument or defend their own in person? If everything is energy, will we know who the fraudsters are, who are brave behind a screen with their AI copilot, but have learnt little along the way?  The idea that our brains stay young when curious, so the desire to learn, to read, to know is valuable, in and of itself. With practice, over time, that learning becomes knowledge and that knowledge banks up and becomes wisdom… so are we sacrificing wisdom at the altar of speed?  And, if so, where is the creativity, the  beauty or the meaning in that? Knowing nothing in person will never be impressive, so the invitation is to learn and stay curious and invested in that which you love… you might find yourself the smartest person in the room, because you did. Stay curious in your own life and the lives of those around you and recognise the potency and intrinsic value of using your curiosity to stay smart, be discerning and keep your brain young all the while.  The temptation is huge and for many things ease and speed are welcomed, but there is a risk to be alive to, and that is, that we will be raising young ones not to think, or we will lose track ourselves of knowing ourselves and how we reach our own thought conclusions because we have sidestepped the process of learning altogether…  From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 12 MIN EP, explores the idea that our individual acts of daily and life-long creativity are the real deal in creating legacy and maintaining our humanity in a world seeking to bluff us into trading our talents for competency and radical speed, void of intuition and almost impossible to ignite deep emotion in response to.  Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  My website: www.jemathison.com Support the show THANK YOU FOR LISTENING PURCHASE MY STORIES AT www.jemathison.com

S 2. 2. POETRY AS STRUCTURAL | DEMOCRACY AS EPHEMERAL

Musings into the irony of poetry as everlasting and strong, structural and foundational and democracy as the fragile creature, beholden to the times and the egos of its leaders. Compelled to speak in this 13 min Ep. by the 24/7 nature of news cycles and their impact on our psyche. The impact of cruelty, greed, narcissism and terror witnessed on an increasingly awful scale with no let up, and for most of us, that is as mere witnesses. That the world needs more kindness than ever, more knowledge, culture, and more spine than ever to speak into corrupt regimes and ignorant leaders. That the structures we have always identified as so robust and everlasting have been revealed, in the wrong hands, to be weak and on the verge of collapse, as power grabs power for its own purposes. The fallacy of democracy as a structure we can trust with our lives, as we witness its dissolution in the U.S and the consequent disregard for accountability, for the human toll and the humane rationale it was intended to uphold.  The irony of the things people have ease denying or denigrating in troubled times, the arts, poetry, languages, creative endeavours, as having the greatest longevity and highest purpose, the strongest foundation and the greatest capacity to grant us structure, meaning and voice. These times are a potent lesson of history repeating itself and of the value of what man has always sought comfort from and solace in. The irony and tragedy of the same country, Iran, that has arguably gifted the world some of its greatest art, architecture, literature and poetry is fighting an internal regime and an external self-aggrandising dictator proclaiming democracy from lie after lie laced lips… The invitation extended, is to seek out the masters of poetry and literature, whose legacy has withstood time, to use them as the structure needed to realign one’s own sense of harmony, and to educate ourselves so we may discern what is lasting and what can be altered so swiftly by lesser minds and lesser men… From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 12 MIN EP, explores the idea that our individual acts of daily and life-long creativity are the real deal in creating legacy and maintaining our humanity in a world seeking to bluff us into trading our talents for competency and radical speed, void of intuition and almost impossible to ignite deep emotion in response to.  Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  NOTES:  These are not scripted so I make mistakes. I noticed two in this recording - do be kind… 1. Immediateness - I struggled to pronounce and think I meant immediacy 2. Anecdote - I intended to say the antidote!  Both 1 and 2 are pretty much in the same sentence. 3. Reference to legislation should really be to the Legislative (ie: arm of government).  REFERENCES TO PERSIAN POETS RUMI and HAFEZ  WEBSITE www.jemathison.com https://www.buzzsprout.com/2362765/episodes Support the show THANK YOU FOR LISTENING PURCHASE MY STORIES AT www.jemathison.com

    S 2. 1. AI - ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO EMOTE

First Ep of 2026.  Musings into the absence of emotion and meaning in the face of AI, as today’s currency of accomplishment. That the graft of any act of intellectualism or creativity is the inherent beauty and meaning of it. How purpose is found in the time spent, the talent required, the skills learnt, the practice persisted with, and not in the absence of all those things. Inspired by a snippet from a podcast , oops, the name of which I did not catch… in which the gentleman made the point, that competence or speed has never engendered inspiration or admiration.  Also speaking into the cost of AI on our own ability to cultivate independent thoughts and creative pursuits, which give us a sense of pride, purpose and achievement by virtue of the graft it took to ascertain them. The logistical cost too and the devastating environmental impact of outsourcing all our power, agency and creative autonomy to 24/7 machinery. Recognising the importance of eliciting emotion, awe and wonder from what others have taken time and effort to create and build.  The absence of which, does nothing to elicit such emotion.  Appreciate the artistry in your own life and the lives of those around you and recognise the potency and intrinsic value.  From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 12 MIN EP, explores the idea that our individual acts of daily and life-long creativity are the real deal in creating legacy and maintaining our humanity in a world seeking to bluff us into trading our talents for competency and radical speed, void of intuition and almost impossible to ignite deep emotion in response to.

    10. FEELING AND REELING

Musings into the tragedy of a gun attack on Sydney’s beloved Bondi Beach and the contrast of devastation and shock against the regularity we have become inoculated against in hearing of such attacks in the U.S. The pride Australians have had for three decades without mass gun violence as a result of Prime Minister, John Howard taking definitive action after the events of what all Australians know as ‘ Port Arthur’.  As against the frequency of such need in the U.S, and especially under the current regime who has just repealed the first major controls put in place in years. Not just pandering to powerful lobbies but having a leader, who uses words and self owned platforms himself to stoke violence, sew seeds of hate and derision and never denounce the type of evil WW|| was predicated on and countries fought to eradicate.  From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 12 MIN EP, explores how devastating it is, that the lessons of world wars have not laid to rest forever, with unanimous consent, that neo Nazi and hate baiting groups should never be tolerated or given airtime. The frustration and sadness when the U.S leader stokes those same flames and refused to denounce them as evil.  Contrast with the heros made so - in the moments that define a tragedy, who act in selflessness and true humanity. A reminder there are always forces for good and it is always a good time to check in on each other and do so with kindness and compassion of word and deed.
